Police probing nursing freshman’s death

The Mandaluyong City police are currently determining whether the death of a Jose Rizal University nursing freshman was really suicide or if foul play was involved.

The 16-year-old student died shortly after she jumped off the fourth floor of the university building earlier this week.

Superintendent Erickson Velasquez, Mandaluyong City police chief said his investigators, headed by Senior Police Officer 4 Jaime Masilang, have been asking the girl’s parents and school officials about the circumstances surrounding her death.

"We have not determined as yet why the teenager jumped off the building," said Velasquez, adding that the girl’s parents requested her identity be kept undisclosed.

According to an initial investigation, the girl was a JRU scholar who graduated a valedictorian from high school. She jumped off the fourth floor of the school’s Building C at around 8:30 a.m. last Wednesday.

She sustained head and body injuries and died while undergoing treatment at nearby Lourdes Hospital.

JRU officials said they were saddened by the death and they promised to cooperate fully in the police investigation.

"We are extending our support to the victim’s family," the JRU management said in a statement. "We are giving our 100 percent support to the police investigation of the case." — Non Alquitran
