BARMM’s relief aid reach Taal eruption victims

By Ali Macabalang

COTABATO CITY – The relief team from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has delivered to Batangas authorities its P2-million worth of relief items for Taal volcano eruption victims.

Workers and volunteers of the BARMM’s Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence (READI) program spent the final leg of their four-day mission in Lipa City on Friday, relief team leader Nagub Sinarimbo announced Saturday.

“Alhamdulillah (praise God), we’ve traveled over a thousand kilometers safely and fulfilled our mission with love for our compatriots in distress,” said Sinarimbo, who led his team all the way from this city to Batangas by land.

Sinarimbo, BARMM spokesman and concurrent Local Government minister, and his pool of trained volunteers were sent off by regional Chief Minister Ahod “Hadji Murad” Ebrahim in symbolic ceremony here last Tuesday, which also marked the first anniversary of the plebiscite that led to the establishment of the new autonomous governance.

The BARMM team initially delivered some relief goods at incident command posts in other areas of Batangas before reaching Lipa City on Friday, READI volunteer media relations facilitator Myrna Jo Henry said.

Henry said Lipa City’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer Leo Tadejapo Jr. received Friday morning from Sinarimbo the bulk of the BARMM team’s relief goodies ferried by two air-conditioned trucks.

Lipa City hosts more than 6,000 families, consisting of 30,000 individuals, affected by the Taal volcano eruption, Henry said. She added there was still a “continuing influx” of evacuees to the city.

Displaced couple Roberto and Susan affirmed that the BARMM-provided relief items were the “best packed” assistance they have received so far.

The transparent plastic box containing 20 kilos of assorted relief goods will be “useful also in keeping our small items in disarray during our displacement,” Roberto told the Manila Bulletin in Pilipino.

The couple said the BARMM’s relief intervention dramatized “national unity in time of peace and distress, regardless of religions and tribes.”

Each of the hundreds of boxes contained 10 kilos of high quality rice, canned goods, medicines and other basic relief items, Henry said.

Newest Bangsamoro parliament member assumes office

COTABATO CITY - The Bangsamoro Transition Authority of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BTA-BARMM) welcomed another Moro leader as a member of the parliament on Friday.

BTA Speaker Pangalian M. Balindong officially welcomed Ali B. Sangki as the newest addition to the BTA parliament.

Sangki paid a courtesy call on Balindong’s office before he formally starts his work as a regional legislator.

On January 8, Sangki, a former undersecretary and executive director of the Office on Muslim Affairs (OMA) took his oath before President Rodrigo Duterte as the 79th member of the 80 required positions at the parliament as required by the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).

“This is another good opportunity to serve our fellow Bangsamoro people,” he said of his appointment.

Aside from the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), Sangki has served the government in various capacities that included Al-Amanah Investment Islamic Bank of the Philippines chief executive officer from 2005 to 2007, and as a provincial board member of Maguindanao from 1992 to 2002.

Sangki also served as project manager of the Southern Philippines Development Authority (SPDA).

“We speak the same language because new Member of Parliament Sangki has a good track record and he is also a seasoned public servant. We warmly welcome him to the parliament,” Balindong said.

Sangki is the father of Maguindanao Governor Mariam Sangki-Mangudadatu.

Congress urged to decide on ABS-CBN franchise renewal bills on merits

Members of various media groups hold a candle-lighting activity in front of ABS-CBN Corp. on Friday as they called on Congress to tackle the broadcast network's franchise renewal applications. House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said on January 22, 2020 that the House of Representatives has enough time to tackle the various franchise applications. ABS-CBN's franchise expires at the end of March this year. Jeff Canoy, ABS-CBN News
Journalists on Friday gathered in front of the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center in Quezon City to drum up public support behind a petition urging Congress to extend the largest entertainment and media conglomerate’s franchise, which President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to block.

An online petition launched last week has gathered more than 150,000 signatures, said Nonoy Espina, whose National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) is leading a weekly “Black Friday” protest against the administration’s pressure on ABS-CBN.

The group expects more signatures to come in as the March 31, 2020 deadline for the franchise renewal nears.

“I think there will be a snowball effect because people really care,” Espina said.

But the decision on whether to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise for another 25 years will ultimately depend on Congress and the president, who has repeatedly threatened to shut down the network for failing to air a political ad in the 2016 elections, among other issues.

Espina urged congressmen to “study the bills on their merits and then decide.”

“Do not decide on the whims of one man even if that man is the president,” he said.

At least 8 bills for ABS-CBN's continued broadcast operation have been pending before the House committee on legislative franchises.

Journalists from different news outlets lit candles and signed the NUJP-led petition outside the ABS-CBN compound.

Espina took the opportunity to also gather support for slain broadcaster Gerry Ortega, who was gunned down in Palawan 9 years ago.

Last month, the Court of Appeals reversed a previous ruling and revived the murder case against the alleged mastermind, former Palawan Gov. Mario Joel Reyes.

“Hopefully, mapagulong na ang katarungan dito at sana makamtan na ni Doc Gerry and matagal nang inaantay nating katarungan,” Espina said.

Last Wednesday, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said the House has enough time to consider not only ABS-CBN franchise renewal bills but other franchise applications.

He said he expects hearings on as many as 50 franchise applications to begin next month.

“I’ll just reiterate that we have committed to the Filipino people that we will have fair hearings, that we will hear the issues and also hear the replies, and we cannot promise you any decision until we finish the hearings, to be fair with everyone," he said.

When pressed by reporters if there is enough time to decide on the franchise bills considering Congress will go on its summer recess by March 11, Cayetano said: “We have enough time.
