After premiering in the Land Down Under in 2015, Australian action suspense thriller “Lurking Woods” will be shown in Manila on Feb. 8.
Knowing the Filipinos’ penchant for suspense, fantasy and horror thrillers, the producers of the movie, Dato’Rod Manikam and Hafizi Homari, believe they have a good chance here.
“You can sell it anywhere in the world,” said Manikam. “I believe this movie will make lots of money and that’s why I put my money into it.”
Director Rizal Halim considers filmmaking his passion. After being an actor in his country Malaysia and even in Hollywood where he appeared in a Jodie Foster film, he went into directing but did not study to become one.
“Cinema was my teacher, so I watched movies. I attended classes by Hollywood directors and bought books about directing and even editing,” he said.
One of Halim’s films, “Still Life,” was screened in Cannes in 2014. He got an invitation to participate again this year.
“Lurking Woods” is about friends in college, six boys and six girls, who went on a holiday in the woods then got killed there one by one during a game.
“This was a bit difficult for me to do a horror movie in daytime, how to make the people jump in their seats (in broad daylight) as most horror films are shot in the night. So it was a challenge for me. It’s something different,” said Halim.
“Lurking Woods” cast members are Hope Devaney, Daniel Berenger, Troy Coward, Dominique Shenton, Kyle James Sargon, Chloe Brown, and Michael Rainone. The movie is also in English.
