Philippines down 6 notches on World Press Freedom Index

Despite being touted as the country with the freest and liveliest press in Asia, the Philippines sank lower in the 2018 World Press Freedom Index of media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontières, RSF).

The country slipped to 133rd from 127th out of the 180 countries on the list. The Philippines has a score of 42.53.

The dynamism of the Philippine press has been challenged by President Rodrigo Duterte, who repeatedly hurled threats against journalists, RSF noted.

"There have been countless examples of Philippine government harassment of media that voice any kind of criticism of Duterte’s 'war on drugs.' Here, again, verbal violence and physical violence are closely linked,” it said.

RSF also noted that the Philippines is the deadliest country for journalists in Asia after four of five media workers targeted by gunmen were killed in 2017.

President Duterte created the Presidential Task Force on Media Security in 2016 to address media killings but has also gone on tirades against journalists and media outlets that have been criticial of his policies.

Last January, the Securities and Exchange Commission revoked the license of news outlet Rappler after it ruled that the news website had violated constitutional prohibition on foreign ownership of media. The SEC probe was prompted by a letter from Solicitor General Jose Calida, who was appointed by Duterte.

Duterte himself took shots at Rappler during his 2017 State of the Nation Address, accusing the news website of being owned by Americans.

Malacañang has also barred one of its reporters from covering the president’s events.

Rights and media groups slammed the attacks against Rappler, one of the most critical media outfits under Duterte, calling these politically motivated and an attempt to silence criticisms of the government.

Duterte has also called out ABS-CBN and Philippine Daily Inquirer for their supposedly “slanted” reporting. He also threatened that he would block the franchise renewal of the Lopez-owned media company.

Malacañang has repeatedly maintained that the government’s moves are “not an attack on press freedom.”

Norway is still the top country in world for press freedom. North Korea also continues to be ranked last on the index.

ABS-CBN calls deal with Globe not sustainable

ABS-CBN Corp. is studying whether it will renew the mobile network sharing agreement with Globe Telecom Inc. set to expire on June 30 this year.

“We recognized the business model is not sustainable financially, so we continue to discuss with Globe. It’s an ongoing discussion with Globe,” ABS-CBN chief financial officer Rolando Valdueza said.

Under the agreement signed in May 2013, Globe will provide the capacity and coverage on existing cellular mobile telephony network to ABS-CBN Convergence Inc. on a nationwide basis.

The parties may also share assets such as servers, towers and switches.

ABS-CBN Corp. earlier reported a net income of P3.16 billion in 2017, down 10.3 percent from P3.53 billion in 2016 in the absence of election-related advertisements.

The company  generated consolidated revenues of P40.7 billion from advertising and consumer sales last year, representing a 2.3 percent year-on-year decline from 2016.

Advertising revenues decreased 10.8 percent year-on-year because of high election-related advertising placements in the first half of 2016.

Excluding election related placements, advertising revenues in 2017 went down by only 0.3 percent  year-on-year, it said.

Consumer sales increased P1.62 billion mainly resulting from the sale of ABS-CBN TVPlus and higher revenues from SkyCable’s broadband and direct-to-home business.

Buhay Carinderia redefined

Buhay Carinderia Redefined kicked off recently at the Rizal Park Hotel (formerly the Army & Navy Club) in Manila. In his speech, Cesar Montano, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Tourism Promotions Board, noted with gratitude the efforts of Marylindbert International (led by Linda Legaspi) in launching the advocacy in 2011, where carinderia owners were given a venue that provided them identity, pride and a sense of belonging.

Buhay Carinderia, then known as Carinderia Fiesta, offers a glimpse into Filipino’s culture and customs. It is scheduled to scour the whole country in search for the best of the best in our culinary scene.

Said Montano: “Filipino cuisine reflects Philippine history. Centuries of trading with the Chinese and the colonisation of Spain yielded the introduction of unique ingredients as well as cooking styles that have created rich diversity in food preparation throughout the country.”

The local culinary experts will gather at the Vigan Convention Center from June 28-29 where they will share their talents to everyone and interact with chosen students of the area so they could also pass on their skills and experiences.

“During this two-day exposition to showcase all the surrounding provinces’ culinary gems, we will also be searching for young individuals who will become our Philippine Tourism Millennial ambassadors. They should be able to enlighten everyone with their town’s (or city’s) deep and multi-cultural food history,” Legaspi said.
