In an effort to pay it forward, singer and Best Actor awardee Ronnie Liang visited an orphanage recently in his hometown Angeles City.

As expected, Ronnie, ambassador of Gentry Charities, brought smiles to the wards of Tuloy Foundation by distributing food, clothes and other gifts. He even performed a song number for the children and volunteers of the foundation.

The “Pinoy Dream Academy” Season 1 finalist, a Viva talent, is currently busy with “100 Tula ni Stella,” a movie co-starring JC Santos and Bela Padilla. It is one of the entries to the inaugural Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP), a project of the Film Development Council of the Philippines that kicks off Aug. 13.

Ronnie will also be seen alongside Ella Cruz and Julian Trono in the film “Fan Girl/ Fan Boy” slated for showing on Sept. 16.

His newest single, “Nagiisang Ikaw,” has been gaining positive feedback. He will soon launch the accompanying music video of the song.

By the way, Ronnie always donates part of his talent fee to Tuloy Foundation.

‘Be physically fit’

IronMan Philippines organizers reminder to participants before joining next races

After losing a participant due to a heart attack last Sunday, organizers of the IronMan 70.3 Philippines said they will try their best to make sure the tragedy won’t happen again in future races.

Eric Nadal Mediavillo from City of San Pedro, Metro Manila suffered a heart attack while competing in the swim segment of the triathlon off the shores of Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.

Race marshals were able to pull him out of the water and brought him immediately to the hospital, where he was declared dead at 9:47 a.m. He was 46.

This is the third time since the IronMan started in the Philippines in 2009 that a participant died while competing. The first was during the maiden year in Camarines Sur when Juan Miguel Vazquez had a stroke also while swimming.

In 2012, the first year the competition was held in Cebu, Cebuano participant Ramon Igaña Jr. succumbed to acute pulmonary embolism while traversing the 90k bike route at the Cebu South Coastal Road.

Although these events were accidents, Princess Galura, the general manager of Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI), which is the organizing team behind the prestigious triathlon event, said they will be stricter in reminding participants to be physically prepared for the grueling 1.9-kilometer swim, 90k bike and 21k run race.

“Some triathletes do not know if they are not healthy. Exercising for them is enough without even seeking a physician’s help about their condition.

That’s why we will always remind them to have a regular check-ups with their doctors prior to the race. Not just regular check-up but thorough check-up to prevent this kind of incident from happening again,” Galura said.

Each participant is actually required to have regular thorough check-ups with their physicians prior to registration. This time, organizers will remind participants to continue with those check-ups since registration is held months before the race.

Race registration is usually done nine months before race day so triathletes can have more than enough time to determine weather they are fit enough for the race.

Galura also clarified that there was no neglect in the side of organizers that led to Mediavillo’s death.

“If there was a problem with then maybe a lot did not finish. But more than 2,000 of the 2,762 participants crossed the finish line safely,” Galura said.

Galura revealed SEI has already extended financial assistance to the family of the fallen triathlete.

Galura said SEI took care of the hospital bills at the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital where Mediavillo was rushed to. They also booked the family’s plane tickets back to Manila.

Mediavillo’s remains are already in his hometown in San Pedro, Metro Manila.

India to host next Asian Youth Day in 2020

MUMBAI: The next Asian Youth Day will take place in India in 2020, the second time the South Asian nation will be hosting the continental-level Catholic Church event since 2003. Indian Cardinal Oswald Gracias made the announcement on Sunday at the end of the concluding Mass of the 7th Asian Youth Day (AYD7), which he presided over in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The venue of the AYD8 will be discussed and decided upon by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). Card. Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, together with Indian Church officials and some of the Indian youth delegation received the simple bamboo AYD cross from their Indonesian counterparts for the next AYD to take place in 3 years’ time.

Differences cannot separate us

Among those who flanked Card. Gracias, the main celebrant, at the altar were Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila and Arch. Ignatius Suharyo of Jakarta, who delivered the homily in Bahasa Indonesia.“We do realize our differences: We are of different nationalities, different languages, different cultures, and so on,” noted the archbishop who is president of Indonesia’s bishops’ conference (KWI).“However, in this event, we do realize and experience that those differences cannot separate us, but the differences show the richness of the united humanity instead. It proves that the power of faith, hope and love unites us.”Arch Suharyo wished that the AYD7 help the young people to “diligently and faithfully live out the Gospel so that we may be filled with the joy of the Gospel.” “Thus, our life could mirror the glory of the Lord, which changes our lives,”he said.

AYD7

The Asian Youth Day in Indonesia, on the theme, “Joyful Asian Youth! Living The Gospel in Multicultural Asia,” was divided into three phases. It began with over 2000 participants from 21 Asian countries living with local families in the country’s 11 dioceses, July 30-August 2. The delegates then converged in Yogyakarta, Indonesia’s cultural and intellectual heartland, for the main event, Aug. 2-6, which concluded on Sunday with a Mass, marked by a rich display of cultural diversity that both Indonesia and Asia are famous for.

This was evident in the flags, including of the Vatican, traditional and ethnic costumes, decoration, singing, music and dancing accompanied by traditional musical and percussion instruments, both during and after the final Mass.

While the young people headed back home, the youth animators and ministers remained behind for the final phase of the AYD7 – the Asian Youth Ministers’ Meeting (AYMM) in Yogyakarta, Aug. 6-9.

AYD mandate

The AYD featured talks and workshops on aimed at building mutual respect in Asia's diverse, multicultural population, caring for the environment and learning how to be missionaries in a digital world. As part of the multicultural aspect and in an effort to address growing fundamentalism in the area, the event hosted several encounters between Christian, Islamic and other religious leaders.

AYD leadership

Among the participants in the AYD7 were 52 bishops 6 cardinals, 158 priests and 41 men and women religious. Among Asia’s prominent Catholic leaders at the meet were Cardinal Gracias, the president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) and member of the Pope's “C9” council of cardinal advisers, Bangladeshi Card. Patrick D’Rozario of Dhaka, the chairman of FABC’s Office of Laity and Family, under which comes the Youth Desk that organizes the AYDs in collaboration with the host bishops’ conference, and Card. Tagle, the president of Caritas Internationalis, the federation of national Catholic charity organizations worldwide.

Among several Indonesian government authorities at the closing Mass were Vice President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla and Governor Sultan Hamengku Buwono X of Yogyakarta.

Held for the first time in Hua Hin, Thailand, in 1999, AYDs have been held in intervals of 2, 3 ‎and 5 years.

Taipei, Taiwan hosted it in 2001, followed by Bangalore, India in 2003, Hong Kong in 2006, Imus, the Philippines in 2009 and Daejeon, South Korea, in 2014, which Pope Francis attended.

Body of fallen triathlete returns home to Laguna

THE remains of 46-year-old triathlete, Eric Nadal Mediavillo, who died last Sunday during the swim portion of Cobra IronMan 70.3 Philippines, was sent back to his hometown in San Pedro, Metro Manila last night accompanied by his grieving wife who traveled with him to Cebu to watch him compete.

As a way to extend their sympathy, organizers of the international race paid for his casket and shouldered expenses for the flight which was scheduled to leave Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) at 10 p.m., Monday.

Princess Galura, general manager of Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI), the organizing team behind the triathlon, said that they also took care of Mediavillo’s medical bills at Mactan Doctors Hospital where he was rushed last Sunday but was declared dead on arrival.

“We should be there to assist them whenever there is something happening and we want to set this straight that it was not the race that was responsible for his death. He did not die with us during the race; he was rescued because he was able to call for help to the marshals manning the swim course, but he did not make it to the hospital,” Galura said.

Medico-legal findings pointed to Myocardial Infarction (MI), commonly known as heart attack, as the cause of the triathlete’s untimely death.

“If there was a problem with the race then maybe a lot did not finish it but more than 2,000 of the 2,762 participants crossed the finish line safe so it’s not the race’s fault why he died,” said Galura.

“The problem was he suffered a heart attack. Technically, he has heart problems so it could happen to him everywhere he would be and not just in the race,” Galura added.

Mediavillo would have competed in the 1.9-kilometer swim, 90k bike and 21k run, but the triathlete suffered a heart attack while doing the swim portion of the race at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa in Cebu.

He represented Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) Multi-Sports Team.

Stricter rules

Galura explained that before a participant could register, they have to make sure that they are physically fit and had undergone a thorough check-up with their doctors.

“Some triathletes do not know that they are not healthy at all. Exercising for them is enough without even seeking a physician’s help about their condition that’s why we will always remind them to have regular check-ups with their doctors prior to the race, not just regular check-up but thorough check-up to prevent this kind of incident from happening again,” said Galura.

Upon registration, participants are asked to sign a waiver stating that they will not hold the organizers responsible for things that could happen to a participant during the race considering that a triathlon is an extreme sport.

They are also reminded about the hazards of joining the race.

Now that the Cobra IronMan 70.3 Philippines has claimed its third casualty, Galura and her team said they will impose stricter rules for those who want to join the race.

In 2009, the first staging of the race at Lago del Ray at CWC (CamSur Watersports Complex) in Pili, Camarines Sur was marred by the death of participant, Juan Miguel Vazquez, the son of Danny and Ising Vasquez who suffered a stroke on the swim portion.

In 2012, Cebuano participant Ramon Igaña Jr. died from acute pulmonary embolism while traversing the 90k bike route at Cebu’s South Road Properties (SRP).

The IronMan 70.3 race registration usually takes place nine months before race day so that triathletes will have time to make a final decision whether or not to push through with joining the grueling race.
