Bench’s Uncut begins with a Kapuso and ends with a Kapamilya

Futuristic is the theme of Bench Denim and Underwear Fashion Show this year. Titled Uncut: A Bold Look at the Future, this much-anticipated fashion event of the year was held last night, July 2, at the Araneta Coliseum.

Bench, which celebrates its 23rd anniversary this 2010, is already gearing up for 2020 where it aims to introduce the brand to a broader demographic and on a more global scale.

Uncut is divided into five segments featuring the exquisite cultures of five different countries/continents—the Philippines, Far East, Brazil, Africa, and Russia. Each segment also features a top fashion designer who created the costumes of the models and celebrities who participated in the fashion show. They are Cary Santiago (Pinoy Lab), Furne One (Far East), Val Taguba (Brazil), Ezra Santos (Africa), and Michael Cinco (Russia).

PINOY LAB. The Pinoy Lab segment opened up the fashion show with matinee idol Dingdong Dantes waving the Philippine flag. Dingdong, who stripped to his underwear in the Bench Blackout fashion show two years ago, was very much covered this time. But that was enough to excite the fans inside the Big Dome and set the tone for the evening.

Aside from Dingdong, the other celebrities who walked on the ramp during the Pinoy Lab segment were Pinoy Big Brother Double Up ex-housemates Sam Pinto and Tom Rodriguez; Are You The Next Big Star runner-up and commercial model Alex Castro; model-actor Joseph Marco; and Star Magic talent Rodjun Cruz.

Kapuso star Kris Bernal was joined by Kapamilya talents John Prats and Sam Concepcion; while ABS-CBN drama actors Coco Martin and Diether Ocampo got the crowd in hysteria by their mere presence.

FAR EAST. Part 2 was the Far East segment with China’s top male model Ji Huan Bo leading the pack.

He was soon followed by hunks Ron Morales, John James Uy, Jon Avila, Jon Hall, and Andrew Wolff; singers Karylle and Christian Bautista; StarStruck graduates Paulo Avelino, Steven Silva, Sarah Lahbati, Enzo Pineda, Diva Montelaba, and Rocco Nacino; Survivor Philippines castways Shaun Rodriguez and Suzuki Sadatsugu; actor AJ Dee; teen heartthrobs Robi Domingo and David Chua; sexy stars Iwa Moto, Iya Villania, and Zanjoe Marudo.

The loveteam of Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, wearing elaborate costumes, closed the segment.

BRAZIL. The show reached its peak during the Brazil segment.

Kapuso sexy actress Katrina Halili, who was surprisingly well-received by the crowd inside the Big Dome, was the first celebrity to appear.

She was immediately followed by Be Bench winner Carl Guevara; Eurasian model Benjamin Tang; returnees Rafael Rosell and Andrew Wolff; Wowowee girls RR Enriquez, Saicy Aguila, and April “Congratulations” Gustilo.

Wendell Ramos remains to be one of the biggest attractions in the Bench fashion shows. The 31-year-old actor wore the skimpiest underwear of all the celebrities that night, showing his flawless buttocks to the delight of the crowd.

Meanwhile, comedienne Pokwang almost stole the show with her grand entrance. Wearing a feathery gown which covered almost all parts of her body, the Wowowee co-host passed through a sea of almost naked gorgeous Caucasian models lying on the floor on her way to the ramp.

Pokwang was followed by Kapuso actress Carla Abellana and Kapamilya heartthrob Enchong Dee.

AFRICA. The next segment was Africa where a line of naked men paraded on stage.

Joining in this part of the fashion show are beauty queen-actress Margaret Wilson, comebacking actor Railey Valeroso, Prince of R&B Jay-R, actor-model Victor Aliwalas, young comedian Thou Reyes, and actor-singer Nico Antonio.

One of the highlights of this segment is the appearance of the PBB Double Up Big 5 housemates: Paul Jake Castillo, Johan Santos, Tibo Jumalon, and the funny pair of Jason Francisco and Melai Cantiveros.

Kapuso hunk Aljur Abrenica, on his first appearance as a Bench model, was the finale of this segment.

RUSSIA. The last part of the show was the Russia segment.

Print and commercial model Georgina Wilson came out in a Cinderella-like carriage with male models in their undies escorting her on her way down.

Gerald Anderson and Enchong Dee both returned on this segment, as well as Jon Avila, Rafael Rosell, and Andrew Wolff. The other celebrities who appeared on this segment are TV5 hunk JC de Vera; Are You The Next Big Star winners Frencheska Farr and Geoff Taylor; StarStruck’s Prince Stefan and Dex Quindoza; and Kapamilya young stars Ejay Falcon, Rayver Cruz, and Shaina Magdayao.

Jake Cuenca, one of ABS-CBN’s top leading men, was the finale. He entered the stage with a crown and a massive blue robe like a Russian czar. Two topless female models accompanied him in removing his crown and robe, revealing Jake in his almost-naked glory.

But Jake was not yet finished. He walked back to the far end of the stage, turned his back, took off his white brief, until only a supporter was left to cover his private part. That certainly brought the house down.

Each segment is also incorporated by elaborate musical numbers to show the history and culture of these countries. Marc Abaya, Vina Morales, and Robert Seña provided the song numbers while the L.A. Dancers and local dance groups provided the dance numbers.

After this, all the models, performers, and celebrities returned to the stage for the curtain call. The five fashion designers and Bench big boss Ben Chan also took the stage to be acknowledged.

Uncut was directed by Johnny Manahan, with Robbie Carmona as the fashion and stage director, Joane Laygo as choreographer.

TILI METER. One of the most interesting parts in a Bench fashion show is finding out the stars who got the loudest cheers and applause from the audience. This also becomes a useful tool to gauge how popular or hot a celebrity is.

The response of the crowd also depends on the gimmick that a celebrity does on stage to get attention—like touching their crotch, showing their butt, etc.—and we saw some of these moments last night. But in most some cases, a star power is enough to elicit a response from the audience.

Based on last night’s Uncut, it was quite obvious that Kapamilya stars are more popular than their Kapuso counterparts—at least to the people who trooped to the Big Dome.

The ABS-CBN stars who elicited the loudest cheers were Coco Martin, Diether Ocampo, Zanjoe Marudo, Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, Rafael Rosell (by doing a back flip and putting his hand inside his underwear), Pokwang, Enchong Dee, Jason Francisco and Melai Cantiveros, and of course, Jake Cuenca.

On the other hand, Dingdong Dantes was the top crowd-drawer among the Kapuso stars. Wendell Ramos and Aljur Abrenica also got overwhelming response from the people. The Araneta crowd also gave Katrina Halili, who just came from a sex-video controversy, a very warm reception.

As for the others, either the background music was just too loud or they simply went unnoticed.

STARS IN THE CROWD. The number of stars who walked on the ramp almost equaled the number of celebrities who watched the fashion show inside the Big Dome.

PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) spotted the following: Richard Gomez and wife Cong. Lucy Torres and her family, Anne Curtis with boyfriend Erwan Heussaff, Jomari Yllana, Maricar Reyes, Chynna Ortaleza, Bing Loyzaga, Pooh, Borgy Manotoc, Isabelle Daza with her foreigner boyfriend, Annabelle Rama and son Raymond Gutierrez, Bettina Carlos, JM Rodriguez, Carlo Concepcion, Tim Yap, Rajo Laurel, and Tessa Prieto-Valdes.

We also saw ABS-CBN executives Cory Vidanes and Deo Endrinal; Star Magic’s Mariole Alberto; GMA-7 executives Wilma Galvante, Marivin Arayata, Lilybeth Rasonable, Ida Henares, Bang Arespacochaga, and Joey Abacan; Regal’s Mother Lily Monteverde and daughter Roselle Monteverde-Teo; talent managers Wyngard Tracy, Manny Valera, and Perry Lansigan; and director Joel Lamangan.

the Bench denim and underwear fashion show was aired on ABS-CBN 2 wayback in Oct. 24, 2010. This is a producer's cut version on Aug. 20, 2017 for BENCH's 30th anniversary

MPIC proposes Cavitex-Sangley expressway

The tollway unit of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. submitted an unsolicited proposal to the government to build an expressway connecting Manila-Cavite Expressway to Sangley Point in Cavite City.

Cavitex Holdings Inc., owned by MPIC, submitted a letter of intent to the Public Works Department on July 3 to build the Cavitex-Sangley Extension Project.

The project aims to connect the Kawit Interchange of Cavitex to Sangley Point in Cavite City and neighboring provinces of Laguna and Batangas and Metro Manila via a reclaimed road and viaduct totaling 4.63 kilometers.

Cavitex is a 14-kilometer expressway linking Manila and Cavite province.

MPCALA Holdings Inc., a unit of MPIC, earlier submitted an unsolicited proposal to build Cavite-Tagaytay-Batangas Expressway, a 46-kilometer road worth P25 billion.

The project aims to link Cavite Expressway and Cavite Laguna Expressway in Silang, Cavite to Tagaytay City and will terminate in Nasugbu, Batangas.

The company is also constructing the P35-billon Cavite Laguna Expressway, a four-lane, 47-kilometer closed-system toll expressway connecting Cavitex and South Luzon Expressway.

The expressway will start from Cavitex in Kawit, Cavite and end at the SLEx-Mamplasan Interchange in Biñan, Laguna.

The MPIC Group is also  building the P11.7-billion C5 Link Expressway, a 7.7-kilometer road that will link C5 Road in Taguig to R1 (Coastal) Expressway. The project is expected to be completed by end-2019.

Metro Pacific Tollways Corp., the tollway unit of MPIC, budgeted P130.5 billion in the next five years to build highways and toll roads around the Philippines.

The company said to fund the projects, it is imperative that overdue tariff increases, now ranging between 20 percent and 48 percent on different parts of the network, be implemented.

“We are in constructive dialog with the new administration on how to achieve this,” MPTC said.

MPTC recorded a core net income of P2.1 billion in the first six months, up 27 percent from last year’s P1.6 billon.

LGUs light up Pampanga lanterns for Asean’s 50th year

LGUs light up Pampanga lanterns for Asean’s 50th year

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — To mark the 50th year of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), 76 local government units (LGUs) throughout the country will switch on 57 lanterns simultaneously, just as President Rodrigo Duterte lights a giant lantern on the grounds of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Pasay City on Aug. 8.

LGUs, government agencies and Malacañang tapped craftsmen from Quiman Trading based in this Pampanga city to make the lanterns.

For the Asean event, the craftsmen produced the largest lantern, measuring 24 feet in diameter, with the smaller lanterns measuring six feet in diameter, said Arvin Quiwa, president of Quiman Trading.

Quiwa’s design features the Asean emblem at the center of the lantern, with images of the national leaf (anahaw), the national flower (sampaguita) and the traditional Mindanao boat (vinta) encircling it, graphic references to the Philippines hosting and chairing this year’s Asean summit in November.

PH lantern capital

Dubbed as the “lantern capital of the Philippines,” San Fernando started lantern-making as a Catholic tradition, but it has since evolved into a homegrown industry.

Since 1908, the city has been holding an annual giant lantern festival every December.

Other cities like Manila and Dagupan in Pangasinan province will each display six lanterns. Further north, the Baguio City Hall and Barangay Poblacion in Banaue town in Ifugao province will switch on similar lanterns on Aug. 8.

Meanwhile, Ilocos Norte province will install its lantern at St. Augustine Church in Paoay town. A lighthouse in Burgos town will also be lighted up during the simultaneous switch-on ceremonies.

Bauang town in La Union province was similarly exhibiting its lantern at Saints Peter and Paul Church, while  in San Fernando City, La Union, two lanterns will be arrayed in the middle of Heroes Park.

In Santa Rosa town in Laguna province, the Asean lantern will hang from an arc, while Isabela province’s lantern will be installed at the provincial capitol.

Lanterns will also be put on display in Albay province and the cities of Legazpi, Iriga and Naga in the Bicol region.

In Cagayan de Oro City, Kiosko Divisoria will host an Asean lantern,  while Osmeña Park in Davao City will similarly be lighted up by a lantern.

Among the agencies set to light their Asean lanterns are the Civil Service Commission, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the National Police Commission, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

The simultaneous lighting ceremony will be followed by a concert of Asean artists at Bonifacio Global City amphitheater in Taguig City. —Tonette Orejas
