Plebiscite to ratify renaming of Compostela Valley to Davao de Oro set on December 7

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has set the plebiscite to ratify the renaming of the province of Compostela Valley as the province of Davao de Oro on December 7.

The poll body set the date of the plebiscite in Resolution No. 10600, promulgated September 11.

This was pursuant to Republic Act No. 11297, the law aiming to rename Compostela Valley as Davao de Oro, dated April 17, with the COMELEC mandated to set the daye and supervise the conduct of the plebiscite.

Based on the resolution, the casting of votes will be held from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the day of the plebiscite.

The counting and canvassing of votes shall then follow with the proclamation of plebiscite results expected at its conclusion.

In the same resolution, the Comelec also prescribed the Calendar of Activities and Periods of certain prohibited acts in connection with the plebiscite.

The Plebiscite Period is from November 7 to December 14. During this period, it will be prohibited to carry or transport firearms and other deadly weapons in public places.

It shall also be prohibited to transfer or detail officers and employees in the civil service; suspend local elective officials; illegal release of prisoners; and organize or maintain strike forces.

The Information and Campaign Period will begin on November 7, and will end on December 5.

Prohibited acts during the period are removing, destroying, obliterating, defacing, tampering or preventing distribution of lawful election propaganda to mention a few.

There were a total of 462,942 registered voters in Compostela Valley in the May 2019 national and local elections.
