ABS-CBN, GMA Network both claimed viewership dominance in July

Media giant ABS-CBN Corp. said its television broadcast segment sustained its nationwide lead in viewer market share for July, citing data from Kantar Media.

Separately, GMA Network Inc. said it was ahead in urban ratings for the same month, using data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

In a statement, ABS-CBN said it had cornered a nationwide average audience share of 46 percent against GMA’s 34 percent, thanks to hit shows like FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, La Luna Sangre, and The Voice Teens.

At the fourth spot is Maalaala Mo Kaya followed by “TV Patrol,” Wansapanataym,” “Rated K,” “Gandang Gabi Vice,” Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin,” It’s Showtime,” “ASAP,” “Banana Sundae,” “Ipaglaban Mo,” Pusong Ligaw,” The Better Half,” Wildflower,” “A Love to Last,” “Tonight with Boy Abunda,” “Bandila,” “Bet on Your Baby,” “TV Patrol Weekend,” Home Sweetie Home” and Goin' Bulilit.

The Lopez-led group said it had also maintained the top spot in primetime TV, coveted since this was when advertisers “put in a larger chunk of their investments to reach more consumers effectively.”

ABS-CBN said it had a 51- percent audience share in primetime, compared to 32 percent for GMA.

ABS-CBN noted it was also ahead in other areas such as Total Luzon (42 percent versus GMA’s 37 percent), in Total Visayas (55 percent versus GMA’s 28 percent); and in Total Mindanao (55 percent versus GMA’s 30 percent).

Likewise helping ratings was President Duterte’s State of the Nation Address last July 24. ABS-CBN said its coverage lured 16.6 percent of viewers, against GMA’s 7.8 percent.

For its part, GMA cited data using National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) for the entire month of July. During the month, it got 43.5 percent of the market, against ABS-CBN’s 37 percent.

It also cited a strong lead “from morning to evening block,” with an average people audience share of 50.3 percent; about 19.5 points higher than ABS-CBN.

GMA said its coverage of Mr. Duterte’s SONA drew more viewers at 37.4 percent of the market, against 34.3 percent for ABS-CBN.

GMA Network has yet to release its July TV ratings, based on Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

GMA ruled across all dayparts in the National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) for the entire month of July (with July 23 to 31 based on overnight data), with an average total day people audience share of 43.5 percent; leading ABS-CBN’s 37 percent by 6.5 points.

Similarly, in Urban Luzon, which accounts for 77 percent of the total urban TV household population in the country, the Kapuso Network maintained a strong lead from morning to evening block with an average people audience share of 50.3 percent; besting competition by 19.5 points.

Majority of the shows in NUTAM’s list of top-rating programs were from GMA. Likewise, in Urban Luzon, the Kapuso Network bagged the first 12 spots in the list of top programs led by Pepito Manaloto, Magpakailanman, “Celebrity Bluff, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Mulawin vs. Ravena, “Bubble Gang, “Saksi, “Imbestigador, Eat Bulaga, Sunday Pinasaya, “Dear Uge, Wowowin, 24 Oras, My Love from the Star, I Heart Davao, Bubble Gang, Saksi, Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, “Road Trip, 24 Oras Weekend, Haplos, Impostora, Tadhana and Ika-6 na Utos.

Meanwhile, GMA-7’s airing of the Battle of Brisbane: Pacquiao vs Horn last July 2 was the most watched TV special nationwide and in Urban Luzon last month.

More Filipinos also tuned in to GMA’s live telecast of President Rodrigo Duterte’s second State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 24. GMA Network’s “SONA 2017” became the most watched coverage nationwide with 37.4 percent people audience share; outranking ABS-CBN’s “Pangako ng Pagbabago: SONA 2017,” which only got 34.3 percent. GMA-7’s coverage registered an even bigger margin in Urban Luzon with 43.2 percent people audience share versus competition’s 26.2 percent.
