GMA Network’s income fell 30% in 2017 in absence of political ads
GMA Network Inc. said Tuesday net income fell 30 percent in 2017 in the absence of election-related spending.
The broadcast network said net income amounted to P2.55 billion last year, down from P3.64 billion in 2016 which received a boost from the national elections.
“Following a banner year in 2016 with the windfall of nearly P1.5 billion from the last national elections and compounded by contraction in the ad spend of major industry players this year, GMA Network and subsidiaries nevertheless managed to exceed prior year’s top line in terms of recurring sales,” GMA Network said.
The company said consolidated revenues also dropped 8 percent in 2017 to P15.34 billion from P16.67 billion in 2016, as airtime sales decreased 10 percent to P13.60 billion from P15.13 billion.
GMA Network said the shortfall in airtime revenues from both television and radio operations was partly cushioned by the improvement in other revenue streams which grew 13 percent last year.
“Without the one-time boost from political advocacies and advertisements this year, nearly all airtime revenue-generating platforms’ top-line performance paled in comparison to 2016. Core channel, GMA-7 which comprised about 81 percent of the consolidated revenues registered the biggest drop among airtime-revenue platforms with a setback of 10 percent compared to last year,” the listed company said.
“Sans the impact of more than a billion worth of non-recurring political load, the channel stood flat against last year’s tally in terms of recurring placements,” it said.
Consolidated operating expenses rose 2 percent in 2017 to P11.81 billion from P11.59 billion in 2016. Production cost and talent fees which comprised 55 percent of total consolidated operating expenses amounted to P6.43 billion, up 1 percent from 2016.
GMA said that in terms of television ratings, it led its main competitor in nationwide urban TV ratings in 2017 with an average people audience share of 42.5 percent, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 36.8 percent.
Overall, the Network dominated NUTAM's list of top programs for 2017 with 20 out of 30 programs coming from GMA. Reigning supreme in the list is the well-loved Kapuso primetime series Encantadia, which became the number one program for two consecutive years.
Award-winning magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho grabbed the second spot as the most-watched Kapuso program for the year followed by the Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza-starrer Destined To Be Yours.
Joining them in the list of most watched Kapuso shows were "Pepito Manaloto," "Magpakailanman," "Full House Tonight," "Celebrity Bluff," "24 Oras," "Super Ma'am," "Mulawin vs Ravena," "Alyas Robin Hood," "Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko," and "All-Star Videoke."
Also included were "My Love From the Star," "Kambal Karibal," "Meant To Be," "I Heart Davao," "My Korean Jagiya," "Kapuso Movie Night," "Bubble Gang," "Saksi," "24 Oras Weekend," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "Hay Bahay!," "Wowowin," "Eat Bulaga," "Sunday PinaSaya," "Dear Uge," "Ika-6 Na Utos," "Legally Blind," "Impostora," "D'Originals," "Haplos," "Karelasyon," "Tadhana" and "Tsuperhero."
Notably, GMA's exclusive free TV telecast of Manny Pacquiao's last fight, dubbed the "Battle of Brisbane: Pacquiao vs Horn", was the most watched TV special for the year.
More Filipinos also tuned in to GMA’s live telecast of President Rodrigo Duterte’s second State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 24. GMA Network’s “SONA 2017” became the most watched coverage nationwide with 37.4 percent people audience share; outranking ABS-CBN’s “Pangako ng Pagbabago: SONA 2017,” which only got 34.3 percent. GMA-7’s coverage registered an even bigger margin in Urban Luzon with 43.2 percent people audience share versus competition’s 26.2 percent.
The broadcast network said it once again “proved to be the Filipino viewers’ network of choice” as the GMA-7’s live telecast of the Miss Universe 2016 pageant on January 30 rated highest nationwide with a 57.1% people audience share, higher than ABS-CBN’s 28% and TV5’s 8.4%.

Lopez Holdings net income drops 36% in 2017
The net income of the Lopez family's holding firm drops to P4.225 billion from P6.557 billion, as earnings of both First Philippine Holdings and ABS-CBN slow in the absence of one-off gains
Lopez Holdings Corporation, the listed holding firm of the Lopez Group, saw its net income drop in 2017 as the absence of one-off gains and elections took a toll on earnings of its energy and media firms.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) on Tuesday, April 17, Lopez Holdings reported a net income attributable to the equity holders of the parent of P4.225 billion in 2017, down 36% from the P6.557 billion in 2016.
The firm attributed most of the decline to the "absence of one-off gains reported in 2016 and absent in 2017" as both its listed subsidiaries saw their profits drop.
As of end-2017, Lopez Holdings has a controlling stake of 46.5% in energy firm First Philippine Holdings Corporation (FPH) and 56.6% in media conglomerate ABS-CBN Corporation.
FPH saw its net income attributable to equity holders of the parent drop 41% to P5.845 billion from P9.933 billion in 2016.
FPH's net income in 2016 had been boosted, however, by one-off gains from the settlement of its unit First Philippine Electric Corporation (First Philec) in an arbitration case and liquidation of damages from the delay in construction of the San Gabriel gas-fired plant.
Excluding non-recurring gains, FPH's recurring net income was up 15% to P6.829 billion compared to P5.929 billion in 2016.
ABS-CBN, meanwhile, saw its net income drop by 10% to P3.164 billion from P3.525 billion in 2016, amid the absence of election-related advertising revenues.
Despite the drop, Lopez Holdings itself saw consolidated revenues increase 14% to P104.890 billion, which it attributed to the "higher sale of electricity from FPH unit First Gen Corporation."

ABS-CBN, ANC, and DZMM will broadcast live all the Masses to be celebrated by Pope Francis at the Manila Cathedral (January 16), in Tacloban (January 17), and in Luneta (January 18). Aside from that, ABS-CBN will offer free public viewing of the Luneta Mass at Alabang Town Center, Glorietta, Trinoma, Fairview Terraces, Market Market, and Harbor Point in Metro Manila and in more than 50 locations nationwide.

REFLECTIONS ON PHILIPPINE BROADCAST MEDIA'S COVERAGE OF THE PAPAL VISIT SO FAR
Philippine broadcast media's coverage of the papal visit leaves much to be desired. It shows lack of depth and preparation and, even more important, a surprising lack of interest in this church leader who is probably the most engaging religious personality in recent times.
What should have media practitioners done? Here's a rundown of key tasks, if I were a broadcast journalist or TV program manager:
Have a better orientation from CBCP or the Papal Nuncio on the papal schedule, and the rationale of the papal activities. The schedule shows the priorities, and one ought to know the reason why the pope is doing each of them. What's the back story?
Read the pope's biography and his homilies, both as a pope and before he became pope. This is where Philippine media has utterly failed. The sermons clearly demonstrate the priorities and themes that has preoccupied this man, and they include love for the poor, the dangers of a self-referential church, the need to "go out" and bring Christ to the world, among others. The homilies between 2009 and 2013 have been published in a book, "Encountering Christ: Homilies, Letters, and Addresses of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio," Scepter Pub. (US$13.95 from Amazon). There is even a Facebook page of the homilies. The titles of his recent sermons are fascinating, e.g., The Church is Not an Entrepreneur but a Mother; God Walks in History With Us and Adjusts Its Course. But clearly, no one in Philippine media bothered.
Brush up on liberation theology. This pope was heavily influenced by non-conventional Catholicism in Latin America (key thinkers: Leonardo Boff of Brazil, Gustavo Gutierrez of Peru) as well writings of the Christian Left (notably Karl Barth, Hans Kung, John Shelby Spong, Paul Tillich, and Cornel West). But obviously, Philiippine media practitioners are blissfully unaware of where Pope Francis' ideas are coming from and how they are nourished. Bumili lang kasi ng suka, naging journalist na!
Refresh on the key biblical teachings that are likely to be touched upon by the themes of Pope Francis' visit (Mercy and Compassion). This theme was announced way ahead of his arrival, which would have given journalists ample time to prepare.
Get updated on the trends in Catholicism, and where "winds are blowing" in the Vatican. This Pope represents the polar opposite of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI. Despite the official Catholic clergy's efforts to establish continuity between the two, they are vastly different in orientation and approach, Benedict being dogmatic and conservative and Francis being practical and inclusive. Nobody in Philippine media has discussed this thoughtfully, perhaps in deference to what CBCP wants to show.
Inform the messages of Pope Francis with demonstrations and examples from Philippine social reality. Again, this is very obvious, but no one is exploiting this rich lode of conversation.
What's wrong with Philippine journalism? OK, that's a rhetorical question, but really we deserve a much, much better and far more intelligent media. That's partly the reason why I wrote this note, because all my recommendations above are doable. FYI, I just Googled all the above just now, so it really doesn't take much effort. The problem is the incredible level of intellectual laziness and insipidity.

NAB 2018: ikan, ikan, and More ikan!
I'm always a fan of lights, and each of the latest LEDs Ikan brought to the show offered a distinctive feature. The CB8 Canvas Fabric LED Light is among the most intriguing, with bendable, lightweight construction that allows for easier positioning and transport. The light is a versatile option for location shooting with a bi-color 3200-5600K color-temperature range and excellent color rendering, with a CRI of 95 and a TLCI of 96. It offers a wide, soft output and a beam angle of 120°. For mounting, the fixture has an X-Holder on a ball mount with standard 5/8" receiver and a baby pin mount with a 90° hole.
While the CB8 may be a solid choice for working on location, the HF150 Helia 150W 4" Fresnel LED Light is going to find itself at home in the studio. It's 4" acrylic lens enables focusing of the beam from 28-70° for shifting from spot to flood as required by each scene. Packed into the fixture is a 150W COB LED that will produce the equivalent output of a 500W tungsten fixture with significantly less power draw. This LED is able to be set with a color temperature between 3200-5600K and offers a CRI and TLCI rating of 96 for reliable color. The light is equipped with DMX in and out connections, permitting remote control of the fixture that can dim from 10-100%. Finally, it offers durable aluminum construction and comes with a yoke, gel frame, barn doors, and a power cord.
Next up is a new lineup of STRATUS cages for select cameras. At launch, Ikan is producing dedicated cages for the Sony a6500 (compatible with a6000 and a6300), Panasonic GH5/GH4, Sony a7 II series, and the Sony a7 III series, with each including a top handle, 15mm rods, base, frame, and cable clamp. Each version is slightly different because they are customized to the camera's physical design, though they all share the use of NATO-compatible top handles, an Arca-type-compatible quick-release system, and various mounting threads for attaching accessories. Along with the cages, the STRATUS line will offer some key accessories, including lens supports and a follow focus.
Two monitors were released at the show, and we will start with the Atlas AX20-FK Field Monitor, which is now integrated into a durable hard case. This display measures 19.5", offers 1920 x 1080 resolution, and can support 4K inputs over HDMI, though 3G-SDI and composite inputs are still available for expanded compatibility. Various monitoring tools can be used in real time, such as waveform, vectorscope, LUTs, and more. Moving into the on-camera offering, we have the DH7-V2, a second-generation 7" model with newly implemented touchscreen operation. 1920 x 1200 resolution will provide a sharp, clear image, and the HDMI input will support 4K resolution. Additionally, you will be able to use custom 3D LUTs.
For more elaborate productions, a teleprompter becomes an essential tool and, now, Ikan has an offering that can be conveniently set up on a light stand. Fast setup is a key benefit of the PT-ELITE-LS and it supports various tablets so that you can use a device you already own to create the script. It also weighs less than 3 lb, uses 70/30 beam-splitter glass, and has an adjustable frame.
Already available, the PIVOT is a 3-axis handheld gimbal stabilizer with an angled arm that provides a clear view of the camera's rear screen for monitoring. It can handle cameras up to 8 lb and offers 360° of rotation, as well as tilt and roll control via a joystick. Other benefits include a point-and-lock mode that will keep the camera in a fixed position as you move around. The PIVOT will work with a mobile app to help create time-lapse shots while an integrated OLED screen will show the operator the operating mode and battery life. Additionally, it has a baseplate that supports Manfrotto 501PL plates and has two 1/4"-20 accessory threads and a 3/8"-16 tripod socket. It runs on three 18650 batteries that can keep it powered for 8-10 hours.
Retailer’s life good enough to be made into a movie

| Danny Velasco |
We’re glad to know our good friend Danny Velasco (who used to own Plaza Fair and Fair Center in Carriedo and Cubao) is slowly getting over the trials in his life, such as his confinement in the basement of a hospital and incarceration reportedly resulting from a family squabble
Danny, who describes himself as “a retailer with big dreams,” has opened small department store Merry Season at the Xentro Mall in San Andres corner Leveriza in Malate. Called “your buy 1 take 1 department store,” it offers a summer sale in time for Mothers’ Day all the way to opening of classes.
Merry Season, the biggest store at Xentro Mall, offers a variety of merchandise like clothes, bags and shoes (most of them imported from Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong), utensils, household wares and others. Danny said he is out to open soon a Merry Season branch in Malaybalay City in Bukidnon (at the P&T Town Center owned by Dr. Thelma Figueroa) and other parts of the country.
While busy rebuilding his retailing business, Danny has not forgotten his dream to produce a movie, or a musical play, and write his autobiography especially with recent developments in his life. Maybe he could make a movie about his own life, interesting as it is?
By the way, education being one of his advocacies, Danny is holding a summer workshop from April 14 to May 26 at Merry Season Dept. Store. Among the subjects are Painting, English, Creative Writing, Cooking/Baking and Sports.

GMA Foundation partners with AirAsia Phils. anew
GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) renewed recently its partnership with local airline AirAsia Philippines, ensuring the timely delivery of services to communities in need across the country.

Under the partnership, AirAsia will provide free domestic flights to GMAKF personnel who will man the foundation’s relief operations and rehabilitation efforts in the regions.
“We are thankful for having a reliable airline partner to help us continue in implementing GMAKF’s projects,” said Escudero-Catibog.
Tiangco, on the other hand, extended her gratitude to the company for being one with GMAKF in their passion for public service. “We cannot continue servicing Filipinos without organizations like AirAsia,” she acknowledged.
Comendador, for his part, said that this union brought so much pride to AirAsia. “I am grateful that we are again signifying our commitment. Let’s continue to work together and help our country move forward.”
Comendador shared that AirAsia is recognized by the Philippine Air Force as an airline affiliate of PAF Reserved Command in which its pilots and staff may be tapped for humanitarian missions including flights for emergency and disaster management.
