ABS-CBN files $4-M copyright suit in US

LOPEZ-LED media giant ABS-CBN has intensified its fight against copyright infringement, slapping a Texas resident and 1700 Cuts Technology with a $4-million lawsuit.

In a statement on Thursday, the company said it filed a complaint in a United States Federal Court in the Southern District of Texas against Anthony Brown and 1700 Cuts Technology for allegedly selling “modified illegal” set-top boxes, allowing buyers to access the network’s television shows “without paying the appropriate fees for such services.”

The involved parties, the Kapamilya network said, were using two personal Facebook profile pages and a business page.

“Beware of these operations that are not licensed or affiliated in any way with ABS-CBN,” ABS-CBN Assistant Vice President and head of Global Anti-Piracy Elisha Lawrence was quoted as saying in a statement.

“We will continue to protect customers by shutting these operations down. The only genuine ABS-CBN internet subscription services are TFC (The Filipino Channel) on cable and satellite, IPTV and TFC.tv,” Lawrence added.

ABS-CBN Managing Director for North and Latin America Jun del Rosario said the group would continue to heighten its crackdown on piracy.

“What these pirates do is literally rob from this ecosystem of content creators, pretend to own the content, and scam customers by making money off that content. ABS-CBN is committed to stopping them and bringing them to justice,” del Rosario said.

In May last year, ABS-CBN also filed a 5-million Canadian dollar lawsuit against Ontorio-based Dazcon Inc.

The group, which has been leading the digital shift in the Philippine broadcast industry, said last week sales of its TVplus reached 8.9 million last month despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s threat to block its franchise renewal.

Duterte reiterated he would “object” the renewal of the network’s franchise, which is set to expire next year, amid allegations that ABS-CBN aired a political ad against him, without even showing Duterte’s paid campaign ad.

Although it has been on the spot lately, ABS-CBN remains silent on the issue.

Shares of ABS-CBN rose by 0.24 percent or 4 centavos to close at P16.40 each on Thursday.
