EXCERPTIONS

It was a peculiar birthday celebration for former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada but, as they say in politics, there are no permanent friends or enemies.

His guests included erstwhile political foes, former presidents Benigno Aquino III and Fidel Ramos, former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, as well as President Duterte, Vice President Leni Robredo, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and former vice president Jejomar Binay, both of whom he did not support in the last presidential elections in favor of Sen. Grace Poe and former Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II.

Before attending Estrada’s 80th birthday celebration Wednesday night, Duterte said in jest that he would send the mayor back to jail for supposedly calling him “a low-class mayor.”

Duterte has apparently not forgotten a remark that Estrada made during the campaign.

“It’s 8 o’clock. Si Erap (Estrada’s nickname), naghihintay na ‘yung buang. Kaarawan niya ngayon eh (Erap, that crazy guy, is waiting for me. Today is his birthday),” Duterte said during the launch of Cine Lokal in Pasay City.

“Sabi niya, ‘Punta ka talaga ha kasi…’ Tapos noon sabi niya, ‘Wala ‘yan si Duterte. Ano ‘yan, low-class lang ‘yan… Ngayon, t i ibalik kita sa kulungan (He said come to the celebration because…but before, he said Duterte is just a low-class mayor…now, son of a b, I will put you back in jail),” he added.

“Ano namang makita mo sa akin (What did you see in me)? If you want to find fault? Money? It will take you forever. Women? They’re all matanda na sila (old). Pinatawad ko na sila. Sabi ko, wala na. So wala (I’ve forgiven them. I said, no more). I sleep early. After eating, I sleep, listen to the news.”

Estrada was removed from the presidency on January 20, 2001 through a popular revolt now known as “EDSA Dos” and was replaced by Macapagal-Arroyo, who was vice president at the time.

Thousands of people gathered at the historic EDSA shrine to call for his resignation after he was accused of amassing ill-gotten wealth and fund diversion.

Estrada was convicted for plunder on September 12, 2007 and was sentenced to life in prison but was granted pardon by Arroyo.

Estrada made a political comeback in May 2013 when he was elected mayor of Manila.

During a meeting with The STAR editors and reporters last December, Estrada described Duterte as a local official who is not fit to run for a national post like the presidency.

“I think he is just for local where he can bully his constituencies. It’s really different in national politics,” Estrada said.

“It’s very local. If you are running for president, you should have finesse. He is just copying me but I have finesse,” he added.

Estrada also asked Duterte to show more finesse in dealing with women.

Star-studded party

After the Cine Lokal launch, Duterte proceeded to the Manila Hotel to attend Estrada’s birthday party that was also attended by former senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Mar Roxas, former first gentleman Mike Arroyo, sisters Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, Pinky Aquino-Abellada, Viel Aquino-Dee and Kris Aquino-Yap, former House Speaker Jose de Venecia and former first lady and now Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos and her son, former senator Bongbong Marcos.
Aquino Sisters
Duterte, the Marcoses, Binay, Enrile, Ramos, Aquino, Arroyo, Robredo, Alvarez, Pimentel and Sereno all sat at the same table with Estrada and his wife, former senator Loi Ejercito.

Estrada’s son, former senator Jinggoy Estrada, joined his father in welcoming Duterte.

The Sandiganbayan allowed Jinggoy, who is detained on charges related to the pork barrel scam, to attend his father’s birthday celebration from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
