THE rehabilitation of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) escalators is about 30 percent to 40 percent completed, according to the International Elevator & Equipment Inc. (IEE).
The repairs and refurbishing, which started about four or five months ago, have taken time to complete because IEE has to order more spare parts and “ordering takes time,” IEE president Ramoncito Ocampo said at the company’s press launch on Wednesday.
He said only the escalator spare parts will be rehabilitated.
Earlier reports said that about 38 escalators of the MRT3 would be rehabilitated over the next eight months. The P65.48-million project, which covers all 34 Mitsubishi-brand escalators, was awarded to IEE through the Department of Budget and Management’s procurement service.
IEE holds proprietary rights to rehabilitate the MRT3’s second batch of escalators, being the brand’s exclusive distributor.
For long-term improvement efforts, the transportation department has earmarked P6.8 billion for the upgrading and rehabilitation of the MRT3.
Meanwhile, IEE, an affiliate of the Mitsubishi Electric Group in the Philippines, said it is now also offering the Mitsubishi Electric airconditioningsystems, which feature some of the highest quality air conditioning systems for residential, commercial and industrial use.
IEE has been engaged the design, sales and maintenance of elevators and escalators in the Philippines for more than 45 years.
