World Youth Day 1995

World Youth Day 1995 (Filipino: Pandaigdigang Araw ng Kabataan 1995) was a Catholic youth festival that took place from January 10–15, 1995 in Manila, Philippines. It was the first time for an Asian country to host the event. Pope John Paul II presided over the event, marking his second trip to the country as Pope after his visit in 1981, and also the last papal visit in the country of the 20th century and 2nd millennium.

Events

A week before the celebration of the World Youth Day proper, two representatives from each of countries all over the world gathered for an International Youth Forum (IYF) at the University of Santo Tomas. The Philippines sent eight representatives, while others were from the different Catholic religious youth organizations and campuses. These were the selected youth leaders and coordinators. During their five-day stay in UST, representatives were grouped and discussed issues and concerns laid out by the Episcopal Commission on Youth, on topics set months before.

The IYF was also a venue wherein few from these selected youth representative had able to have a short talk with the Pope. Young pilgrims gathered from many different parts of the world to celebrate God together, to learn other cultures and to speak as "brothers and sisters" among themselves. There was also a Mass where some youths directly received Communion from the Pope. Youth pilgrims gathered from different parts of the world to worship and talk together. Different activities were held, including a traditional Barrio Fiesta, where it was possible to search company and entertainment. During these days, Masses were celebrated every day in most parishes throughout the Philippines.

The closing Mass, held at Luneta Park, was estimated to have been attended by more than 5 to 10 million people, the second-largest papal gathering in history.

It was surpassed by the anniversary celebration of Catholic Charismatic group El Shaddai to coincidence with the birthday celebration of Bro. Mike Velarde last August 20 to 21, 1988 and August 20 to 21, 1994 and the anniversary celebration of Evangelical Charismatic Christian group Jesus is Lord Fellowship to coincidence with the birthday celebration of Bro. Eddie Villanueva last October 9, 1994.

"The recall of the frequencies has no additional impact on ABS-CBN Corporation," the company said in a disclosure to the stock exchange.

The full impact of the non-renewal of the franchise has been discussed in a disclosure last July, it said.

The NTC on Sept. 10 released to the media the order recalling the frequencies assigned to ABS-CBN, which it said was “warranted” in the absence of a legislative franchise. ABS-CBN said it received a copy of the decision on Sept. 11.

As Alvin Elchico tells us, the association of Philippine broadcasters urges the network to re-apply for a franchise as its former frequencies are now up for grabs.

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.  He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.  And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.  You may ask anything in my name, and I will do it.  John 14:12‑14

If God really is supernatural, should we think it so strange when the miraculous occurs? Put more personally, can we trust Him for that which has no human explanation today?  Or should we conclude that God put our world into operation and then withdrew, leaving our world to run itself?  There is one thing for certain.  The twelve men who walked with Jesus Christ experienced a great deal of the supernatural, for Christ, according to the Gospels, touched blind eyes and men saw.  He cleansed the lepers.  He unstopped deaf ears, and the lame walked.  This, of course, was very unsettling to some of the people who were present, especially the religious leaders who were convinced that God could, but to actually see it, was rather distressing.  How could they account for it?

Paul explained, when he wrote to the Corinthians, "God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them..." (2 Corinthians 5:19).  Paul's explanation was that God's power was manifest in the life of His Son, Jesus Christ.  Miracles were not any problem because they believed that when Christ did something miraculous, God was working through Him.  And it is also an historical fact that miracles were prominent in the early church.  After the day of Pentecost, Peter and John went to the temple and encountered a lame man.  "We do not have any silver and gold," Peter explained.  "But we will give you what we have.  In the name of Jesus Christ, rise up and walk."  The man got to his feet and walked, leaping and praising God.

Luke, the historian for the early church said, "And they were continually devoting themselves to the Apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.  And everyone kept feeling a sense of awe, and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles."  Later in the Book of Acts he says, "Many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's portico."  Mark closes his Gospel saying, "And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the Word by the signs that followed."

Unquestionably, these early Christians expected the supernatural because God was no natural happenstance to them.  They were simple men who had nothing yet had everything.  What they had, the church today seems to have lost!  Were those miracles confined to the days of the first century alone?  Some believe so, and never see anything more miraculous than a common cold going away in three days.  Yet others believe the words of Hebrews 13:8, which says, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever, and expect God to meet them in ways that offer no human explanation, and it happens.  From its inception, Christianity has been cradled in the supernatural, and it can only follow that its very nature and character are the same today.

To His disciples in the Upper Room, the night before the crucifixion, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.  He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.  And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.  You may ask anything in my name, and I will do it " (John 14:12‑14).  Do you believe it?  Then believe that God will do that for which there is no human explanation.  Yes, as a songwriter put it, "I believe in miracles."

Why You Can Still Be Optimistic

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.  Isaiah 6:1

Is there any room for optimism today?  That may depend on your definition of optimism.  If you see it as looking for a black cat in a dark room, or feeling for a light switch that has been removed, originally connected to a burned‑out bulb, I guess there is not room for much optimism today, but if you believe that it is still God—not chance or fate—who is in control of our universe, there is still room for hope.  When we look beyond the headlines and read the last chapter, we come to understand that the scope of God's power can be brought to bear on the difficulties of life whether they are national or personal.

If God created the world and then went back to heaven somewhere out there and left us to our own destruction, there would be no room for any kind of optimism today.  But if God, who created our world, is interested in the affairs of my life as the Bible says, then I have to understand that the planet of my life is not on a wild collision course with fate.

The Bible says that God’s power can change the hearts and lives of people, and that is one of the reasons that there is a Christian optimism born of faith in God no matter how dark the storm clouds.  The Good News is that God never gives up on people!  "If anyone is in Christ," wrote Paul, "he is a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The second reason that there is an optimism born of faith is that the Bible declares that God, not chance, is the ultimate reality.  Nearly a hundred years before Enrico Fermi and his colleagues learned how to split the atom, a French scientist wrote in his diary, "The time will come when man will not only split the atom, but that the energy of the sun itself will be harnessed.  When that time comes, God will come down and say, 'Gentlemen, it is time to close up shop.'"  Decades have passed since man split the atom, and God still has not come and said, "It is time to close up shop," but the Bible says that one day He will say, "Enough!  Gabriel, blow your trumpet!"  Then Jesus Christ will return to our earth even as He came the first time.  Christianity contends for the ultimate triumph of God and good in the world‑‑not evil!  No matter how dark the hour, the last chapter in the history of humankind has not yet been written.

Reason number three that there is an optimism born of faith is that a believer has a motive first for accepting others as they are because God has accepted him or her!   This means that the barriers which separate can be broken down.

I sat in a restaurant and listened to a conversation between two men‑‑one a Christian and the other an agnostic.  The agnostic was tearing the Christian apart for some of the things he believed, and the Christian sat there, taking the verbal abuse, not quite sure what to answer.  Finally, I leaned over and spoke to the agnostic: "Excuse me, sir!" I said.  "I could not help overhearing your conversation, and I would like to ask you a question if you do not mind."  "Surely," he replied, "go ahead."

Then gesturing toward his friend, I said, "Suppose this man is wrong and there is no God, no heaven or hell.  What has he lost?"  He thought for a moment and then said, "Well, I suppose nothing...."  Then I said, "But just suppose he is right, what have you lost?"  After a moment he said, "I never thought of it like that...."  An agnostic by the name of E.C. M. Joad began to think of it like that and changed his mind because there is an optimism born of faith.

NTC recalls frequencies, channels assigned to ABS-CBN

The National Telecommunications Commission on Thursday recalled the frequencies assigned to ABS-CBN, which it said was “warranted” in the absence of a legislative franchise.

"The denial of respondent's franchise renewal application by Congress, coupled with the denial of respondent's petition by the Supreme Court, lead to no other conclusion except that respondent had already lost the privilege of installing, operating, and maintaining radio broadcasting stations in the country," the NTC said in a decision released to the media Thursday.

"Consequentially, absent a valid legislative franchise, the recall of the frequencies assigned to respondent is warranted," the decision dated Sept. 9 said.

ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise expired last May 4. Its free TV and radio channels went off the air on May 5 following a cease and desist order from the National Telecommunications Commission.

The network’s bid for a fresh 25-year franchise was denied by the House Committee on Legislative Franchises despite the position of several government agencies that the company has been compliant in various tax, trading and labor laws, among others.

The Supreme Court en banc on Aug. 25 also voted to dismiss the plea of ABS-CBN Corp. to stop the closure order issued by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in May.

All provisional authorities, certificates of public convenience granted to ABS-CBN were also "revoked/cancelled," the NTC said.

Fitch Solutions earlier called the shutdown “highly politicized.”

Since the shutdown, thousands of employees have been retrenched and departments wiped out including its regional operations.

                                                                                                                                                                                              https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/09/10/20/ntc-recalls-frequencies-channels-assigned-to-abs-cbn

If ever man makabalik ang ABS-CBN sa ere, I think those frequency numbers won't matter anymore, since (1) hindi na rin pwedeng gamitin ang VHF channels (2 to 13) sa digital, (2) they can locate their channel assignment via virtual channels, and (3) baka makabalik pa rin naman sila sa 1-12 positions ng TVplus.

Once they return with a new franchise, they might end up as a radio and TV network and an all-DTV network, as well

The National Telecommunications Commission recalls ABS-CBN's TV and radio frequencies nationwide

In another blow to media giant ABS-CBN, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued an order recalling its frequencies.

In a decision dated September 9 and released to media on Thursday, September 10, the NTC noted that ABS-CBN no longer has a legislative franchise to continue operating its television and radio stations nationwide.

The NTC also revoked all certificates of public convenience, which had given ABS-CBN the authority to use the frequencies.

"Indubitably, the denial of respondent's franchise renewal application by Congress, coupled with the denial of respondent's petition by the Supreme Court, lead to no other conclusion except that the respondent had already lost the privilege of installing, operating, and maintaining radio broadcasting stations in the country," the decision said.

"Consequently, absent a valid legislative franchise, the recall of frequencies assigned to respondent is warranted," it added.

The NTC decision covers ABS-CBN's frequencies nationwide, including radio stations DZMM and MOR.

NTC Deputy Commissioner Edgardo Cabarios earlier told Rappler that once the commission recalls ABS-CBN's frequencies, the media giant could still turn to the Court of Appeals.

ABS-CBN's franchise expired on May 4. Its free TV and radio stations went off-air a day later, after the NTC ordered it to stop its operations.

In the same week ABS-CBN was shuttered, the media giant ran to the Supreme Court (SC) in a bid to stop the NTC's cease and desist order. Senators, in a resolution, also urged the NTC to reconsider its order.

NTC said it had to suspend hearings on the recall process back then, given ABS-CBN's petition at the SC.

In July, the House committee on legislative franchises denied ABS-CBN's new bid for a 25-year franchise over alleged "numerous violations." This is in contrast to what transpired at a Senate hearing, where the network was cleared of such violations.

Without a franchise, ABS-CBN had to lay off employees and close its regional broadcast arm.

Late August, the SC dismissed the embattled network's petition for being moot and academic, following the House move to kill its franchise renewal.
