Annual business conference urges gov’t to fix congestion, add infrastructure
The deplorable state of infrastructure in the metropolis and the ever-worsening vehicular congestion were cited as major problems that need to be addressed in the recent 25th Metro Manila Business Conference (MMBC) held late last week at the Manila Hotel.
With the theme ‘Change’, members of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry came up with eight resolutions, five of which sought solutions to logistics, flood prevention and public transportation in the National Capital Region.
Various infrastructure projects and policies were tackled by attendees of the conference, which included the fast tracking of the North Luzon Expressway- South Luzon Expressway Connector Road, the Metro Manila Interchange Construction Project IV, Floor Protection Works in Marikina River, Manila Bay Integrated Flood Control, Coastal Defense and Expressway, and Laguna Lakeshore Expressway Dike.
They also want Congress to grant President Rodrigo Duterte emergency powers to address congestion, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to finish construction of the Integrated Transport System Project: South and Southwest Terminals, MRT Line 7, LRT Line 2 East Extension and LRT Line 1 Extension, MRT-LRT Common Station, Ninoy Aquino International Airport Development, and Quezon Ave. and Central Corridor Bus Rapid Transit System.
In addition, businesses in the metro are calling for a more uniform permit system for delivery trucks and vans from the DOTr, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), local government units (LGUs), and Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in order to avoid the need to pay pass-through fees to speed up delivery time.
