Soul sisters

Ovation Productions intends to relive the fun and laughter of “Sister Act” the movie when it presents a stage adaptation of the musical starting June 29 at the Solaire Resorts & Casino’s The Theater.

“Sister Act” was one of the most financially successful comedy movies of the early 1990s, and credit that to the fun elicited by the fabulously talented Whoopi Goldberg who plays the sassy convent nun Sister Mary Clarence (a.k.a. Deloris Wilson).

Of course, the music featured 60 Motown hits and the musical scoring by Marc Shaiman contributed to the success factor.

The irresistibly infectious songs used in the lively and lovely production numbers were actually featured in the soundtrack album that was released in conjunction with the movie. The CD debuted at No. 74 and eventually reached No. 50 on the Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart.

Among tracks in the collection are “The Lounge Medley,” “Rescue Me,” “Hail Holy Queen,” “Rolly With Me Henry,” “Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes),” “My Guy (My God),” “Just A Touch Of Love,” “Finale: I Will Follow Him,” “Shout,” and “If My Sister’s In Trouble.”

“Sister Act” spawned a sequel in 1993 entitled “Back To The Habit,” and an equally successful musical adaptation that premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California in 2006.

Another stage adaptation opened at the West End London Palladium in May 2009, and another followed and premiered on Broadway at the Broadway Theater on April 4, 2011.

“Sister Act” earned $231-million worldwide and was also rated No. 83 on Bravo’s “The 100 Funniest Movies” list. Aside from Whoopi, the movie also starred Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, Mary Wickes and Harvey Keitel. It was written by Joseph Howard and directed by Emile Ardolino with Adam Greenberg as cinematographer.

“Sister Act” the musical will run for two weeks. Sponsors are Smart, Pradera Verde Wake Park and Diamond Hotel. Media partners are Manila Bulletin and Fox, among others.
