After a world-wide performance, ‘Sister Act’ comes to Manila

After being seen by over six million people all over the globe, including Milan, Vienna, Paris, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom, the appeal of the acclaimed Broadway musical “Sister Act” is ready to be savored by Filipino theatergoers. It will premiere at The Theater of Solaire Hotel & Casino this year.

After its world premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse in the fall of 2006, followed by a production at Atlanta’s Theatre in the winter of 2007, the musical went on to receive Tony Award nominations after the West Production began preview performances at Palladium Theatre in London on May 7, 2009 and the Broadway production began preview performances on March 24, 2011 and officially opened on April 20, 2011.

The traditional Broadway musical received five 2011 Tony Award nominations for BestMusical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

“Sister Act” was also nominated for four 2010 Olivier Awards, including Best Musical.

“Sister Act” is about Deloris Van Cartier (played by Whoopi Goldberg in the movie), a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look – a convent. Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

“Sister Act” is Ovation Productions’ second Broadway musical to be shown in Manila, the first being Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” shown at the CCP two years ago. “Sister Act” in Manila is being produced in cooperation with Broadway Entertainment and Troika with Fox and Manila Bulletin as among media partners.
