Director Dan Villegas has earned the title “Box-Office Director” having notched several romantic-comedy hits starting with “English Only, Please” which even won Jennylyn Mercado the 2014 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Best Actress Award.
Villegas is also the man behind “#WalangForever” (also starring Jennylyn with Jericho Rosales); “The Break-Up Playlist” (starring Piolo Pascual and Sarah Geronimo); “Always Be My Maybe” (Gerald Anderson and Arci Muñoz); and “How To Be Yours” (Gerald and Bea Alonzo).
Dan is fielding another potential box-office hit in the horror film “Ilawod,” written by Palanca awardee Yvette Tan, and starring Ian Veneracion, Iza Calzado, Epy Quizon, Therese Malvar, Xyriel Manabat, and Harvey Bautista.
In the film, Ian and Epy play the role of reporter and photographer, respectively, usually covering weird, supernatural stories. Iza plays wife to Ian’s character Dennis. She, together with their children (played by Xyriel and Harvey), will be possessed by the “Ilawod.”
“Ilawod,” opening in cinemas nationwide tomorrow, is produced by STAR Cinema, Quantum Films, MJM Productions, Tuko Films and Butchi Boy Productions.

Another trophy for Danny
Danny Dolor was granted the Arturo M. Padua Memorial Award recently for his contributions to the movie industry, “Its brightest star on earth,” according to the citation. It is his second FAMAS trophy, having been honored with the Dr. Jose Perez Jr. Memorial Award a few years back.
He personally received his award at Romulo’s Cafe from FAMAS Pres. Francia Conrado, Chairman Angelo Padua, and VP Alice Reyes. Also present at the simple get-together were columnists Ricky Lo, Ronald Constantino and yours truly.
The two FAMAS statuettes now join Danny’s other trophies, among them the Dangal ng Haraya from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts – the highest award given to cultural workers, considered a lifetime achievement award.
Danny is also a Papal Awardee, an Outstanding Manilan, and Surian ng Wikang Pambansa (Institute of National Language) honoree.
He has published two books: “Golden Years Of Philippine Movies,” and the Carmen Rosales biography, written by the late Manny Fernandez.
