Multi-awarded actor Allen Dizon is a true-blooded son of Pampanga. It is where he grew up and he is now raising his family there.
His latest film, “Area,” has Allen recalling a moment from his youth.
“I would be lying if I say I didn’t go to Area when I was young,” he said. “My friends and I didn’t go there very often but it was part of the adventure of men in Angeles to visit Area once in their lifetime.”
Area was a haven for pimps and prostitutes where they sell their services. The passage of time has diminished its appeal and it is now but a distant memory.
Its namesake film won the Special Jury Prize at the recently concluded 12th Eurasian International Film Festival in Kazaksthan. Directed by the equally multi-awarded Louie Ignacio, the film is now part of the official selection at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia.
In “Area,” Allen plays an ex-cop who became a “kasador” or brothel operator.
“My character is not a stereotype. He doesn’t force or hurt the girls. Although I use them to provide for my family, I treat them well. I take care of their needs like food and shelter. My character is guilt-ridden because we use sex to provide for our financial necessities so to make up for that, he does the Penitensya during Holy Week. I was actually hurt doing the scene but I needed it so I could really get into my role,” Allen related.
Allen’s “Area” co-star is Ai Ai delas Alas, deglamorized as the ageing prostitute Hillary. She thanked Louie for bringing out the best of her in the film.
“Area” opens tomorrow in several theaters nationwide. It’s rated A by the Cinema Evaluation Board.
