‘1st Sem’ named Best Feature at India filmfest By: Crispina Martinez-Belen Published November 3, 2016, 12:05 AM

“1st Sem,” an indie movie that tackles a mother-child relationship, won Best Feature Film at the All Lights India International Film festival last September.
First-time feature film directors Dexter Hemedez and Allan Ibanez were both ecstatic with the triumph.
“This victory is overwhelming considering we went to India not expecting anything,” expressed Dexter who informs us the film is actually a dramedy with “just the right feel to it.”
The film, which has screenwriting icon Ricky Lee as creative consultant, was cited by the All Lights jury as “courageous.”
The movie actually scored twice with its lead star Lotlot de Leon being honored with an Sole Acting Citation for, as festival juries put it, her “exceptional performance” in the film.
It is Lotlot’s first international acting recognition and she is quite proud and happy about it.
Supporting Lotlot is a cast of newbies led by boyish-looking Darwin Yu, who honed his acting chops via Star Magic workshops.
Also in the cast are rising young actors Miguel Bagtas and Sebastian Vargas; Teri Lacayanga, Maddie Martinez, and Karen Romualdez who had her acting training in Toronto, Canada; and Allan Paule.
Last July 7, “1st Sem’s” Director of Photography, Neil Daza, received recognition for his work on the film at the Cinema World Fest Awards in Ottawa, Canada.
The movie is set to participate at the Nazioarteko Zinetxiki Children and Youth International Film Festival in Bilbao, Spain from Nov. 14 to 27. The Hemedez-Ibanez tandem is bound to make a wave at the New Directors Section.
The Kids First! Film and Video Festival in New Mexico, USA likewise shortlisted “1st Sem” in its selection and raved that “it offers a very realistic depiction of a Philippine single mother dealing with her son’s misadventures.”
