Gerald Anderson can be friends with his exes

Gerald Anderson, 28, said his morning drama series “Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin” was instrumental in him forging renewed friendship with actress Kim Chiu, reportedly his girlfriend for four years.

“Kaya ko pong sabihin ang totoo na kaya ko pong makipagkaibigan sa ex ko. At dahil po ’yan sa show kong ginagawa na sobrang blessing nga siya dahil nabigyan ako ng chance na makasama ko ang ex ko,” said he at the press conference for his latest film “Can We Still Be Friends?”

He added he now can ask Kim about her life while he can talk freely about his with her. “Truly, every time na magkasama kami ay nangungumustahan kami. Kaya ko talaga maging friends with my ex but it takes time,” stressed Gerald.

He also believes it’s better that he and his ex are friends especially in showbiz which he describes as a “small industry.”

“Pangit ’yung iwas-iwas ka at ayaw mong makita ’yung tao. I respect my ex so much at sayang naman ’yung mga years na nagsama kami,” he said.

His real life experiences are reasons the actor could relate well to his movie “Can We Still Be Friends?” Directed by Prime Cruz, the Star Cinema movie is set for a June 14 opening in cinemas nationwide and it also stars Arci Muñoz. This marks their second tandem after “Always Be My Maybe” in 2016.

Gerald is Digs in the movie who broke up with his girlfriend Sam, played by Arci, after eight years. The irony is that after their break-up, both found themselves “checking” each other’s lives.

Law on the Philippine National Anthem

From September 2007 to March 2010, the Philippines was abuzz about Christian Bautista, Martin Nievera, La Diva and Arnel Pineda’s rendition of the national anthem before the the exhibition match of Gerry Peñalosa and Bernabe Concepcion  and Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey boxing matches in the United States. A few commentators opined that his take on the song was a violation of Philippine law, specifically Section 37 of the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines (R.A. 8491).

Republic Act No. 8491

AN ACT PRESCRIBING THE CODE OF THE NATIONAL FLAG, ANTHEM, MOTTO, COAT-OF-ARMS AND OTHER HERALDIC ITEMS AND DEVICES OF THE PHILIPPINES
. . .
CHAPTER II
THE NATIONAL ANTHEM
Section 35. The National Anthem is entitled Lupang Hinirang.
Sec. 36. The National Anthem shall always be sung in the national language within or without the country. The following shall be the lyrics of the National Anthem:
Bayang magiliw,
Perlas ng Silanganan
Alab ng puso,
Sa Dibdib mo’y buhay.
Lupang Hinirang,
Duyan ka ng magiting,
Sa manlulupig,
Di ka pasisiil.
Sa dagat at bundok,
Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,
May dilag ang tula,
At awit sa paglayang minamahal.
Ang kislap ng watawat mo’y
Tagumpay na nagniningning,
Ang bituin at araw niya,
Kailan pa ma’y di magdidilim,
Lupa ng araw ng luwalhati’t pagsinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo,
Aming ligaya na pag may mang-aapi,
Ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo.

Sec. 37The rendition of the National Anthem, whether played or sung, SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MUSICAL ARRANGEMENT AND COMPOSITION OF JULIAN FELIPE, IN 2/4 BEAT WHEN PLAYED; AND WITHIN THE RANGE OF 100 TO 120 METRONOME, IN 4/4 BEAT WHEN SUNG. THE NHI, IN COORDINATION WITH THE PROPER GOVERNMENT AGENCY, SHALL DISSEMINATE AN OFFICIAL MUSIC SCORE SHEET THAT REFLECTS THE MANNER IN WHICH THE NATIONAL ANTHEM SHOULD BE PLAYED OR SUNG.
Sec. 38. When the National Anthem is played at a public gathering, whether by a band or THROUGH THE PLAYING OF A RECORDING IN ANY FORMAT, the attending public shall sing the NATIONAL anthem. The singing SHALL BE MANDATORY AND must be done with fervor.
As a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention and face the Philippine flag, if there is one displayed, and if there is none, they shall face the band or the conductor. At the first note, all persons shall execute a salute by placing their right palms over their left chests. Those in military, scouting, citizens military training and security guard uniforms shall give the salute prescribed by their regulations. The salute shall be completed upon the last note of the anthem.

Individuals whose faith or religious beliefs prohibit them from making such pledge must, nonetheless, show full respect when the pledge is being rendered by standing at attention.

The national anthem shall not be played and sung preceding events of mere recreation, amusement or entertainment purposes except on the following occasions:

a) International competitions where the Philippines is the host or has a representative; b) national or local sports competitions; c) During the “signing off” and “signing on” of radio broadcasting and television stations; d) Before the initial and last screening of films and before the opening of theater performances; Provided, that the owners and management of the establishments shall be mandated to enforce proper decorum and implement the pertinent provisions of this act; and e) Other occasions as may be allowed by the NHI.

Sec. 39. All officials and employees of the national and local government, and any agency or instrumentality thereof, including government-owned or controlled corporations, privately-owned entities or offices displaying the national flag and government institutions of learning are hereby directed to comply strictly with the rules prescribed for the rendition of the anthem. Failure to observe the rules shall be a ground for administrative discipline.

The Oath of Patriotism (Panatang Makabayan) must be recited after the singing of the national anthem in basic education institutions. The Pledge of Allegiance (Panunumpa ng Katapatan sa Watawat ng Pilipinas) may be recited as well, though the law did not specify who is required to do so.

“We have to follow the law, and our law is very categorical (on this). In singing the national anthem, you have to follow the arrangement of Julian Felipe, the original copy of which is officially kept at the National Library of the Philippines, in 2/4 beat when played; and within the range of 100 to 120 metronome in 4/4 beat when sang,” he said.

In the spirit of Araw ng Kalayaan as well for next week, Timow’s Turf will tackle over that aspect in detail for each network. Bear in mind that this does count MVs that is aired for seasonal purposes such as Women’s Month provided by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) last March.

According to networks

ABS-CBN

Prior to the network's version, from January 1, 1991 to December 30, 1994, it used the version of the Philippine National Anthem produced by Philippine Airlines, also used for PTV-4, GMA-7 and Islands TV/IBC-13 [except New Vision 9]. During the time of President Marcos, maestro Lucio San Pedro made an arrangement of Lupang Hinirang which was so different from the original. It was a beautiful arrangement. Nobody complained. It was played in movie theaters before the screening and people had to stand up for a long time because it was very long. I'm sure some of you still remember this.

From December 30, 1994 to May 31, 1998, the successor of the version of the Philippine National Anthem produced by Philippine Airlines was the version of the Philippine National Anthem produced by BPI (Bank of the Philippine Islands), used for this station, along with PTV-4, ABC-5, RPN-9 (RPN, The Network/RPN) and IBC-13 (Pinoy ang Dating, IBC), also used for sister channel Studio 23 from October 12, 1996 to May 31, 1998 and rival GMA-7 until August 22, 2010.

From June 1, 1998 to June 11, 2000, it used the 1998 Centennial version produced by DYR-Alcantara and Production Village Corporation, also used on Knowledge Channel until 2012.

In mid-2000s, the network decided to create their in-house concept with the circle of their talents and ordinary people sang the anthem. However, some recognized faces were no longer connected with Mother Ignacia such as Willie Revillame (due to his tarnished reputation) and Dolphy (when he signed the deal with TV5).

However, stars come and go – few but significantly big, especially Ai-Ai de las Alas and Kris Aquino. When both of them ended their contracts, Vice Ganda took Ai-Ai’s place but Kris’ scene remained intact.

Now, with KathNiel, LizQuen, love teams formed from Pinoy Big Brother (e.g. BaiLona, MayWard), The Voice finalists, FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano child stars like Xymon Ezekiel “Onyok” Pineda and McNeal “Makmak / Awra” Briguela joined in their ever-expanding roster of exclusive talents, they really need a massive update.

Despite this, such visual version of the national anthem is very popular and is played in major cinemas nationwide — except SM, perhaps — before the initial and final full film screenings of the day.

GMA

This network reportedly proposed a freestyle rendition of the anthem by their exclusive stars in the 1990s but due to the prevailing law, it was shelved and instead played the 1994 PNA video from BPI.

They don’t have their own concept until August 22, 2010 when they showcase the pantheon of historical heroes portrayed by their veteran stars.

On April 9, 2013 (after 24 Oras), they ditched it in favor of how heroes can inspire ordinary Filipinos towards nation building.

The current edition (since Jan. 1, 2016) emphasizes on posterity as the hope for the country’s future.

After the anthem, all editions end their concept with their network’s audio jingle — the first being in full and the second and third edition being abridged. The present edition tracked the centerpiece globe of SM Mall of Asia, hinting that such mall and other SM malls around the country used this version on their silver screens before showing the GMA Network Center.

TV5

Since their reform last August 2008 from ABC 5, they still aired the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo-era PNA MV where they emphasize the “Strong Republic” agenda until now due to their laziness.

CNN Philippines

Only aired on free TV, the vocal-less MV’s visual concept is focused on each of the eight provinces — reflected in the rays of the sun in the flag — with their untold, distinct, significant and contributory part of the Philippine Revolution that’s not commonly found on general history books.

Note the ending scene has the vertical orientation of the flag under war mode (i.e. red field on observer’s left and blue on right). It can be interpreted either as intentional (due to historical gist) or unintentional (an error from the creators).

RPN Davao

Since thier reform last January 2008 from C/S on RPN they still aired the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo-era PNA MV where they emphasize the "Strong Republic" agenda until now due to the laziness

PTV

Since the end of the Gloria years in 2010, their PNA version with the “Strong Republic” concept was deemed unfit unlike the earlier-mentioned TV5. They modestly added then-President Noynoy Aquino’s picture and quote after her, covering the predecessor’s agenda.

Because of their laziness and deterrence to produce a new concept, they regressed to the BPI version and is still playing today under the succeeding and present Duterte administration.

IBC

The current PNA music video that aired over the barely recognizable network was made under former President Noynoy Aquino’s communication team; simply put, their concept is a hodgepodge seam of old and new clips.

Going into details, it’s an assortment of videos and pictures from CRT monitors, nearly outdated military assets, Sarah Geronimo’s Bayanihan para sa Kapayapaan to monuments.

Since the guards have been changed for 11 months now, no motive will still replace the PNA concept – a reflection of how sloth and broke Old Balara is.

Net 25

Using the Koro Filipino’s rendition, their version is simply a mix of Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifaco and natural beauty.

Light Network

The first digital-only TV channel uses the government-approved Centennial version in 1998 — apparently placed for nostalgic purposes during their pioneer years as ZOE Broadcasting Network on then Channel 11.

Knowledge Channel

The educational cable and satellite TV channel uses the fully animated music video of the Philippine National Anthem performed by the Radioactive Sago Project and produced by NHCP (formerly NHI) and Rock Ed Philippines.

ABS-CBN, GMA claim top ratings in May

ABS-CBN Corp. strengthened its dominance in nationwide television (TV) ratings in May, while GMA Network Inc. said it was the leader in urban households in the country.

Citing data from Kantar Media, ABS-CBN said it widened its TV ratings lead nationwide in May through its average audience share of 46 percent compared to GMA’s 34 percent.

Kantar Media’s data is based on a nationwide panel size of 2,610 urban and rural homes that represent 100 percent of the total Philippine TV viewing population.

ABS-CBN said it remained king in the primetime block (6 p.m. to 12 midnight) as 50 percent of households in the country tuned in to its programs, higher than GMA’s 33 percent.

The primetime block is the important part of the day for advertisers as this is when most Filipinos watch TV.

ABS-CBN also won in the morning block (6 a.m. to 12 noon) through an audience share of 37 percent versus GMA’s 32 percent; in the noontime block (12 noon to 3 p.m.) with 43 percent compared to GMA’s 38 percent; and in the afternoon block (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.) with 47 percent against GMA’s 35 percent.

It also beat GMA in different parts of the country such as Total Balance Luzon where it recorded an average audience share of 47 percent compared to GMA’s 36 percent; in Total Luzon with 41 percent against GMA’s 37 percent; in Total Visayas with 53 percent compared to GMA’s 28 percent; and in Total Mindanao with 53 percent as opposed to GMA’s 29 percent.

Meanwhile, GMA said in a statement yesterday it was the most watched TV network in May based on Nielsen TV Audience Measurement’s National Urban TV Audience Measurement which showed it had an audience share of 42.5 percent, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 36.7 percent.

GMA said it also kept its lead in Urban Luzon, which accounts for 77 percent of the total urban TV household population in the country.

In particular, GMA had a 49.8 percent audience share in Urban Luzon versus ABS-CBN’s 30.5 percent.

Kapuso programs, likewise ruled the list of top-rating programs in NUTAM with seven out of the top 10 shows coming from GMA.

The recently concluded hit telefantasya Encantadia once more clinched the top spot. Joining the list are new primetime launches Mulawin vs. Ravena and My Love from the Star, as well as consistent top-raters Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Destined to be Yours, Pepito Manaloto, Magpakailanman, Full House Tonight, 24 Oras and Saksi.

Also posting high nationwide ratings are Hay Bahay, Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, Wowowin, Imbestigador, Eat Bulaga, Sunday Pinasaya and Follow Your Heart.

Radio GMA’s flagship FM station Barangay LS 97.1 was hailed as the number one choice of listeners in Mega Manila according to the latest survey of Nielsen Radio Audience Measurement.

Barangay LS captivated the hearts of more listeners in Mega Manila for the month of May with an average audience share of 22.2 percent, which was driven by its variety of programs and wacky bunch of DJs.

P3B allotted for toll expansion By Myla Iglesias May 30, 2017 - Malaya News

South Luzon Tollways Corp. (SLTC) has allocated P3.041 billion for capital expenditures this year, mostly to fund the expansion of South Luzon expressway (SLEx) by 57.04 kilometers from Sto. Tomas, Batangas to Tayabas, Quezon.

SLTC, majority owned by diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC), said P2.3 billion of the capex will be used to expand Toll Road 4 (TR4).

The remaining budget will be spent on enhancement activities including flood mitigation, conversion to LED lights, seamless tollway project and toll collection system/traffic control for P438 million, as well as asphalt resurfacing, pavement repair, bridges and slope embankment for P275 million.

The company said it is on track to start the construction of the first phase or TR4A from Calamba to Makban in Laguna next month. The entire project is targeted to be completed by 2022.

The expansion to TR4 is part of SLTC’s 30-year concession or until 2036. The project’s construction cost is P16.8 billion, inclusive of other transaction costs, and the right-of-way (ROW) acquisition cost is P3.5 billion (reimbursable).

Currently, the Toll Regulatory Board has signed and approved the final engineering design for TR4. The Department of Public Works and Highways and the Department of Transportation also signed the ROW acquisition.

“SLTC aims to extend the reach of SLEx by accomplishing full construction of TR4, a new 57.04 km four-lane toll road from TR3 in Sto. Tomas, Batangas to Lucena City in Quezon, thereby extending SLEx to around 93 km,” the company said.

“SLTC may also consider the possibility of an extension of the concession period for SLEx,” it added.

SLTC will also be pursuing improvement projects such as road widening, additional lanes and toll plazas, rehabilitation and other road repair works, flood mitigation and other safety measures.

SLTC is 80 percent owned by MTD Manila Expressways, a unit of SMC, and 20 percent owned by state-run Philippine National Construction Corp.

The company is the concessionaire of SLEx which currently spans 36.1 km from Alabang, Muntinlupa to Sto. Tomas.

DOTr, LRTA break ground for LRT-2 extension

Transportation officials on Tuesday broke ground for the 4 kilometer Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) East Extension Project.
It entails constructing a 4 km extension of the LRT-2 System from Santolan in Pasig City to Masinag in Antipolo, Rizal.
Two additional stations – Emerald, in front of Robinsons Metro East and Sta. Lucia in Cainta, and Masinag, before the Masinag Junction in Antipolo City – will also be constructed.
"Travel time from Recto to Masinag will soon be reduced to 40 minutes compared with the usual travel of up to 3 hours in the same route by bus or jeepneys," the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said in an emailed statement Tuesday.
D.M. Consunji Inc. (DMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of DMCI Holdings Inc., bagged the contract for the two stations. Construction is set to start on June 6, 2017.
To be completed in August 2018, the project is envisioned to accommodate 80,000 passengers more per day in the first five years of operation. That is on top of the daily ridership of 240,000 on average.
Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade and LRTA Administrator Reynaldo Ignacio Berroya led the groundbreaking.
“It will be a timely addition to have both new stations in the LRT Line 2 as we acknowledge the need for greater accessibility of passengers coming from the eastern side of Metro Manila, extending to key areas of Antipolo and its nearby cities,” Tugade said.
“The completion of the LRT Line 2 East Extension Project is part of the fulfillment of the government’s promise to ease traffic congestion by extending the service of the LRT Line 2 System to the eastern part of Metro Manila,” Berroya noted. — Jon Viktor Cabuenas/VDS, GMA News

DOTr leads groundbreaking of LRT 2 Masinag, Emerald stations today

The east extension of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 2 will be commercially available by the second half of 2018, the transportation department said in an advisory.

Such a target, which falls a year short of the original third quarter of 2017 goal, was set as the government breaks ground for the new stations of the railway line today, Tuesday.

“On Tuesday, May 30, the Department of Transportation and Light Rail Transit Authority will lead the groundbreaking ceremony of the LRT Line 2 East Extension that will signal the start of construction of its two stations,” the advisory read.

The two new stations, Masinag and Emerald, will be built by construction company DMCI.

“The project will be completed in August 2018,” the advisory read.

The extension of the country’s youngest overhead railway system is expected to cater to an additional 75,000 daily passengers living in densely populated areas of Rizal.

The train line has a daily ridership of about 217,000 passengers, below its designed capacity of between 570,000 passengers per day.

The government also plans to extend the railway line all the way to the port area through the Public- Private Partnership (PPP) Program.

It was approved by the previous government’s National Economic and Development Authority Board, but was included in the pipeline of projects to be implemented under the PPP Program.

The project will extend the line from its current end-station in Recto up to Pier 4 in the port area in Manila and the operations and maintenance of the existing LRT-2 System.

The LRT 2 is a 13.8-kilometer mass-transit line that traverses five cities in Metro Manila namely Pasig, Marikina, Quezon City, San Juan and Manila, along the major thoroughfares of Marcos Highway, Aurora Boulevard, Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard, Legarda and Recto Avenue.

‘My Love From The Star’ premiered last night

The local adaptation of the Korean series “My Love From The Star” premiered last night on GMA Telebabad and as expected, it provided “kilig” moments to viewers.

Jennylyn Mercado plays Steffi Chavez, a beautiful, sophisticated, and overly confident popular actress who is careless at times. Meanwhile, newest Kapuso heartthrob Gil Cuerva steps into the shoes of Matteo Domingo, an intelligent, aloof, but cold and often distant extra-terrestrial being forced to live his days here on Earth.

The story begins over 400 years ago when Matteo’s spaceship crash-landed on Earth. Since then, he has lived many lives and eagerly awaits the return of beings from his planet to take him home. While waiting, he encounters Steffi. Steffi, being the popular actress, is used to people literally and figuratively falling down her feet and giving her everything she wants, but Matteo doesn’t even know who she is and this comes as a shock for her.

Initially, they won’t get along, but will later on come to discover that they have feelings for one another and fall in love. But how can two different beings from two separate worlds – a human and an alien – be together?

Completing the cast are Gabby Eigenmann as Jackson Libredo, Christian Bautista as Winston Libredo, Glydel Mercado as Lynelle Chavez, Renz Fernandez as Peter Yuzon, Jackie Rice as Lucy Yuzon, Migo Adecer as Yuan Chavez, Melissa Mendez as Doris Yuzon, Spanky Manikan as Mr. Jang, Nar Cabico as Jun, Analyn Barro as Mina, Valentin as Detective Park, Moi Marcampo as Kathy, Pauline Mendoza as Marcella, the girl Matteo fell in love with back in the 16th century.

Playing a very special role in the remake is Rhian Ramos as Rachel Andrada, another sought-after actress and the top rival of Steffi in the industry.

“My Love From The Star” airs after “Mulawin Vs. Ravena.”

“Mulawin Vs. Ravena” has been trending worldwide since premiere.

Many couldn’t help but feel nostalgic over the first “Mulawin” that GMA Network presented many years back. And viewers noted the exciting chemistry between Heart Evangelista (Alwina) and Dennis Trillo (Gabriel) that they could feel their emotions in their scenes.

The choreography and special effects are also amazing, thanks to the leadership of Dominic Zapata and Don Michael Perez.

House approves bill on Mandaue’s lone congressional district bid Read more: http://cebudailynews.inquirer.net/134423/house-approves-bill-mandaues-lone-congressional-district-bid#ixzz4q68bmzqn Follow us: @inquirerdotnet on Twitter | inquirerdotnet on Facebook

Proponents of Mandaue City’s lone district bid are one step closer to realizing their dream after the House committee on local government approved House Bill 4117 authored by Rep. Jonas Cortes of Cebu’s 6th district.

“This bill affords the city and its constituents the right to enjoy the privileges appurtenant to a legally declared congressional district and will ultimately redound to the benefit of the people, not only of Mandaue City but also of the sixth district by way of better welfare, service and benefits,” Cortes said in a privilege speech.

Cortes, a former mayor of Mandaue City, said the city has 365,144 residents and is known to be Cebu’s industrial center.

The conversion of Mandaue City into a lone district was one of the campaign promises of Cortes when he ran for district representative during last year’s elections.

If enacted into law, Mandaue City will leave Cebu’s sixth district which is composed of the towns of Consolacion and Cordova.

This will also allow the city to receive funding in the General Appropriations Act every year after its approval.

During the committee deliberation, Cortes thanked several officials for supporting his bill including former Cordova mayor Adelino Sitoy, who is now presidential adviser on legislative affairs and head of the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office (PLLO).

He also thanked Cordova Mayor Therese Sitoy-Cho and Consolacion Mayor Teresa Alegado and some councilors of the two towns who also attended the committee deliberation.

The passage of the bill was backed by the Mandaue City Council which earlier passed a resolution supporting the conversion of the city into a district.

At the same time, the Cebu Provincial Board also approved a resolution by Board Members Thadeo Jovito Ouano and Glenn Bercede supporting the bill.

Jamaal James Calipayan, the chief of staff of Cortes, said the next step will be an endorsement of the approved committee report to the committee on rules.

“It will be forwarded to the floor for a period of sponsorship and deliberation at the plenary for the second reading. Then the third and final reading,” he said.

After this, the bill will have to be referred to the Senate for their own version.

LRT2 stations rehab completed in Sept.

The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) yesterday said the P138-million replacement of the conveyance system at LRT Line 2 will be completed in September this year.
The replacement works for the 32 defective elevators and 13 non-operational escalators have started recently.
This is a component of the ongoing multi-year rehabilitation project of LRTA that will put back in good working condition the equipment and facilities of the LRT 2 system.
Gen. Reynaldo Berroya,  LRTA administrator,  said  dismantling of the defective conveyance system at Recto station --  one of the busiest stations of LRT-2 which serves as the  transfer point to the Doroteo Jose station of LRT-Line 1 --  has started.
LRT-2 has 32 elevators and 58 escalators. However, none of the elevators is operational and only 31 out of the 58 escalators are working. Of the 27  non-operational of escalators, 13 have been included in this project.
Berroya said  fixing the conveyance system at busy stations like Recto, Legarda, Cubao, Katipunan and Santolan is being prioritized as there are more passengers boarding and alighting at the said stations.
“We are hoping to restore the elevators and escalators at Recto and Santolan stations next month. However, timely completion and use of the same will depend on the arrival of the equipment and parts and issuance of permit to operate by the respective local governments,” Berroya said.
With the complete restoration of the conveyance system in September of this year, better accessibility, convenience and safety at stations will be experienced by the riding public particularly by the elderly, persons with disability, pregnant, and women with children.
The project was bid out by the procurement service of the Department of Budget and Management and awarded to the joint venture of  MA-AN Construction Corp. and IFE Elevators.

Gary V. finds a new way of helping children

Last Christmas, Typhoon Nina wreaked havoc on Baybay Elementary School in Malinao, Albay.

“Almost all our materials, tables, desks, books were damaged. We had computers before but the flood resulting from Nina damaged everything,” said Grade 1 teacher Francia Camilo.

Helping them pick up the pieces is singer Gary Valenciano, whose Shining Light Foundation turned over a Smart school-in-a-bag to the school last April 5. Donated by the PLDT-Smart Foundation and Smart Communications, the school-in-a-bag contains a solar panel, LED TV, five tablets preloaded with the Batibot app, a laptop, Smart pocket wi-fi and smartphone with starter load, a hard drive, and curriculum-based educational content.

“When I started out in the industry, the thought of doing something like this for children was beyond me. It was usually, ‘Let’s come up with a fundraising concert because they need a building for education.’ I still do that today. But the school-in-a-bag is a totally different way of doing it. With this I can encourage and reach people through technology,” said Valenciano, who hails from Bicol.

The singer’s foundation, established in 1989, supports needy students, Christian missionaries, and people with diabetes.

‘Celebrity Bluff’ returns

“Celebrity Bluff,” hosted by Eugene Domingo, makes a comeback with awarded actor and TV host Edu Manzano as special bluffer.

In an interview, Domingo couldn’t contain her excitement. She said she loves making people happy and even describes it as her mission in life.

Manzano revealed doing “Celebrity Bluff” is a first for him. He said having Domingo would make the show more enjoyable and a memorable experience for him.

“Bilib ako sa kanya,” he commented. “It’s harder to make people laugh than cry. I’m looking forward to working with Uge.”

The show also features Boobay and the Kapuso boy band One Up as bluffer and performers respectively.

The new season would have back-to-back, star-studded pilot episodes with Pambansang Bae Alden Richards and comedian Brod Pete as bluffers. Competing for the grand prize are “Ika-6 Na Utos” stars Sunshine Dizon and Ryza Cenon, best friends Andrea Torres and Rochelle Pangilinan and Jennylyn Mercado and Sheena Halili.

Also joining the new season are Joyce Ching and Kristoffer Martin, Bea Binene and Derrick Monasterio, and Bianca Umali and Miguel Tanfelix.

“The creation of the Mandaue Congressional District shall ensure and guarantee further representation of at least one Congressman to carry their interests and verbalize the aspirations of Mandaue City being a highly industrialized manufacturing hub of the Province of Cebu” pagbasa sa resolusyon sa duha ka mga bokal.

(BANAT NEWS)
