Andrea Brillantes: The next Judy Ann Santos?
At a press conference for ABS-CBN’s soon-to-be-ending teleserye “Annaliza,” its writer and first director, Gil Soriano, said that Andrea Brillantes is going to be the next Judy Ann Santos. A very flattered Andrea, the current Annaliza, said she’s happy “na nagustuhan niya (Soriano) ang remake namin ng ‘Annaliza.’”
ABS-CBN business unit head and director Ruel Bayani affirmed that the show captivated the hearts of Filipino viewers the whole 10 months that it aired, going on to make Andrea the Philippine television’s next big tween superstar. “She really has a big future ahead of her. With her looks and great acting chops, she will definitely go far. She has the makings of a massive star and she’s on her way to becoming one. We’re very thankful na nagmarka ang portrayal niya of Annaliza,” he said.
A lot has changed in Andrea’s life. Her newfound fame has made her a household name. Her portrayal of the TV heroine also earned her a Best Child Performer award at the 2013 PMPC Star Awards for Television.
Andrea related, “Many people want to take photos with me now. I also gained more followers on Twitter and Instagram, and I feel that more people love me.”
She feels a bit sad that “Annaliza” is nearing its end. Among activities she will miss include, working with “my best friend Kyline (Alcantara), my Tatay (Zanjoe Marudo), and the rest of the cast… but that’s just how it is.”
Asked what she has learned from working in the series, Andrea said, “Maging mabait sa kapwa at kahit may masamang gawin sa ‘yo huwag patulan because vengeance is not ours, it’s God’s.”
Andrea hopes that she would be able to work with the likes of Anne Curtis, Kim Chiu, Bea Alonzo and Daniel Padilla in the near future.
Andrea turned 11 last March 12. She is a Grade 5 pupil at the Ambassador School for Children in Quezon City.

Tanauan’s First ‘Parade Of Lights’
The first “Parade of Lights” set the main road of Tanauan City ablaze with colorful floats in various glittery designs attracting thousands of people.
The meeting last March 8 was attended by several celebrities, among them were Melanie Marquez, Dr. Vicki Belo and Jobert Sucaldito.
Melanie, 1979 Miss International, praised the “Parade of Lights,” describing it as inspiring.
Tanauan City Mayor Tony Halili agreed, saying he never expected the huge number of people who watched the parade, especially as it was the first time.
“We needed this kind of a project,” Mayor Halili said. “We earnestly believe it will help promote tourism in this part of the country in the long run.”
The “Parade of Lights” was held with the support of the Tanauan Rotary Club, and all the participating barangays in the city.
Irene Tabing, current president of the Tanauan Metro Rotary Club, stressed that, as grand as the first one had been, the next “Parade of Lights” will even be more extensive.
Mayor Halili, who’s on his first term, was recently thrown into the limelight having made a thief, whom he described as a “recidivist,” do a “walk of shame.”
“I was aware that there were so many negatives comments especially from social media, but I also got overwhelming support from my constituents. How else can you discipline recidivists?”
He was asked if he was aping Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, but he laughed it off, saying, “He has done so much for Davao. I am only a newborn compared to him.”
Mayor Halili stressed that his major thrust is peace and order. “I am the first mayor here who declared that illegal drugs have no place in Tanauan. And I told those involved in the nefarious and illegal business to immediately leave the city, and they did.”
The construction of Tanauan’s new city hall and a public market is now underway.

Potential Beauty Queen Is A Nurse
One of the prospective winners in this year’s Bb. Pilipinas Pageant is Ladylyn Riva, candidate No. 39. She is a registered nurse and has worked at the Aklan Mission Hospital for a year.
Ladylyn was one of the most applauded candidates during a recent fashion show presentation. She wore a fabulous gown inspired by the Ati-Atihan festival as created by Cherry Samuya Veric.
Ladylyn was raised by her grandmother. Her mom, married to an italian, lives abroad.
Ladylyn was a Miss Casino Pilipino title holder. She was a Bb. Pilipinas semi-finalist in 2011. She supports the Bb. Pilipinas advocacies and was once involved in giving joy to the children of poverty-stricken Payatas and the aged residents of Kanlungan ni Maria.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Red Tour’ comes to Manila in June
Seven-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift is heading to Southeast Asia in June as part of “The Red Tour.” Presented by Cornetto with AirAsia as the official airline, it brings Swift to Tokyo, Jakarta, Manila, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Atlantis Productions celebrates its 15th anniversary with the first professionally licensed production of “Ghost The Musical” in the Asia Pacific region. The musical will run from April 25 to May 11 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.
Adapted from the hit film, “Ghost The Musical” follows the story of young couple Sam and Molly. His untimely death will lead to a new understanding of love’s inherent power. Trapped between two worlds, Sam refuses to leave Molly when he learns she is in danger. Desperate to communicate with her, he turns to a storefront psychic, Oda Mae Brown.
Headlining the cast are Asian pop superstar Christian Bautista as Sam, musical theatre actress Cris Villonco as Molly, respected singer-actress Ima Castro as Oda Mae and theatre actor Hans Eckstein as Carl.
Directed by Bobby Garcia, “Ghost The Musical” is presented through a special licensing agreement with Theatrical Rights Worldwide.

‘Unity in Excellence’ for UAAP season 77
University of the East officially took over the duties as host of the 77th season of the UAAP on Wednesday in the closing ceremonies of season 76.
UE’s Carmelita Mateo, the president of the league for the incoming season, received the UAAP colors symbolic of the transfer of hosting chores from Adamson.
“I would like to express how proud and happy we are to host the upcoming season,” Mateo said in a brief speech at the Century Park Hotel in Manila.
“We congratulate Adamson for hosting a very successful UAAP season 76. Indeed, greatness never ends.”
It was a controversial yet thrilling season for the UAAP mainly because of the two-year residency rule, which even opened a Senate committee hearing.
But it was a fulfilling season for all schools as all of them bagged at least a championship with La Salle taking home the overall crown for the second straight season.
“We hope season 77 will be as successful and I pray without controversies,” Mateo said with a laugh.
She bared that the theme for anticipated UAAP season 77, which opens this July, will be “Unity in Excellence.”
“We aim to prove that UAAP is synonymous to unity and excellence.”

Editorial: Happy 86th Birth Anniversary to President Fidel V. Ramos today
Former President Fidel V. Ramos, the 12th President of the Republic of the Philippines, is celebrating his 86th Birth Anniversary on March 18, 2014. His presidency (June 30, 1992-June 30, 1998) was marked by a revitalized and robust economy, when there was an influx of foreign and domestic investments. A total of 229 structural reform laws were enacted by the Philippine Congress during his term. He promoted people empowerment and global competitiveness.
President Ramos, popularly called “FVR,” had a distinguished career in government and earlier, in the military where he was a multi-awarded officer. He is recognized worldwide as one of “Heroes of EDSA” for his valiant role in the historic EDSA People Power of February 22-25, 1986, that restored democracy to the Philippines. Prior to becoming President, he served in the administration of President Corazon C. Aquino as Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and Chief of Integrated National Police and Secretary of National Defense.
As a military man, he fought in the Korean War, and was one of heroes of Battle of Hill Eerie. He was commanding officer of Philippine Civic Action Group in Vietnam. He was awarded the Philippine Legion of Honor, Distinguished Conduct Star, Philippine Military Merit Medal, United States of America (USA) Legion of Merit, French Legion of Honor, United Nations Service Medal, and USA Distinguished Graduate Award. He is the only Filipino to receive an honorary British Knighthood from the United Kingdom, the Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, from Queen Elizabeth II in 1995 for services to politics and government. He won the 1997 United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Peace Award, the first for Asians. He received 28 honorary doctorates from foreign educational institutions. President Ramos is active to this day in various areas, through his Foundation for Peace and Development, where he interacts with world leaders and speaks on politics and governance. He is the author of several books on nation-building, democracy, citizenship, and civil responsibility.
Born in Lingayen, Pangasinan, he was the son of former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Narciso R. Ramos and educator Angela Valdez Ramos. MMDA launches 2014 MMFFP
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino recently launched the 2014 Metropolitan Manila Film Festival Philippines (MMFFP), expressing much optimism that it will surpass last year’s more than P900-million gross income.
“I am inviting again all the local producers, directors and independent filmmakers to participate, with deeply entertaining and high quality movies we can all be proud of,” Tolentino announced. The deadline for submission of entries for the mainstream category is on June 14.
This year marks MMFFP’s 40th year, and Tolentino said it is his last participation as festival chairman.
“I am going back to my home city, Tagaytay, next year to reassume my position as mayor,” he also announced, with a touch of sadness. “And I thank you all for having worked with me in the MMFFP.”
He also called out those who have criticized him and said that there’s no rancor in his heart. “What is important is that we are all united in pushing through with the MMFFP, whoever will be the next MMDA chairman. Let’s make MMFFP even more glittering and more successful.”
Since he held the chairmanship of the MMFFP, the festival consistently achieved an increase in gross income. The MMFFP has several beneficiaries, like the Film Academy of the Philippines, the Mowelfund, the Optical Media Board, and the Film Development Council, among others.
Tolentino also announced that an archive and library building will be constructed within the compound of the MMDA office in Makati, to house all the films entered in the MMFF. It will include a mini-theater, a schoolroom for film students and more.

Talent Search Continues In SM
“Dreams Get Real,” a talent search organized by McJim Classic Leather, continues its series of weekly eliminations this March in various SM Supermalls in Metro Manila, Southern Luzon, and Central Luzon.
After its media launch on March 2 at SM Las Piñas, the weekly elimination was held last Sunday, March 16, at SM City Clark. The next eliminations will be held at SM City Calamba on March 23, and at SM Manila on March 30.
At the media launch, the crowd and media guests were entertained by rapper Geo Ong, the boy band 1:43 and Kimpoy. The last two also performed at SM City Clark on Sunday.
1:43, which counts as members Anjo Resurreccion, Argee Golding, Gold Aquino and Yuki Sakamoto, won the hearts of netizens when they released “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo.” The track won Song of the Year at the 5th PMPC Star Awards for Music.
The group’s new single, “Hayop Sa Ganda,” is now a certified radio hit. Composed by the group’s road manager Urie Tesorio, the song pays tribute to the “incomparable pulchritude of Filipino transgender women.”
Its music video features Vice Ganda’s prominent sidekick Negi and Miss Tourism Queen International 2012 Kevin Balot.
Just days after a teaser video showing images of some gorgeous Filipino transgender women was uploaded on YouTube, “Hayop Sa Ganda” garnered thousands of views and received positive feedback from the gay community.
“Hayop Sa Ganda” was recently named “Most Wanted Song of the Week” by 97.1 Barangay LS, as it landed on the station’s “The Big Ten.”
“I had a good feeling about 1:43’s latest single. I am confident that it’s going to be my boy band’s next big hit, probably even surpassing the success of ‘Sa Isang Sulyap Mo,’“ said manager Chris Cahilig, who is also project head of “Dreams Get Real.”
The grand champ of “Dreams Get Real” will receive a cash prize worth P50,000, a recording and management contract, and a grant to record a single and release a music video.

DOJ panel laban kay Arnel Pineda bubuuin
Balak ng Department of Justice na bumuo ng panel of prosecutors na didinig sa anumang reklamo na maaring isampa ng National Historical Institute laban kay “Journey” lead singer Arnel Pineda dahil sa umano’y pagbago sa rendition ng “Lupang Hinirang” sa laban ni world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao kamakalawa.
Ayon kay acting Justice Secretary Alberto Agra, kailangan muna niyang matanggap ang formal complaint ng NHI bago sila magbigay ng komento sa usapin.
Inamin din ng kalihim na hindi pa niya personal na naririnig ang sinasabing maling pag-awit ng international singer kaya mahirap para sa kaniyang maglabas ng anumang opinyon.
Nilinaw naman ng NHI na wala pa silang isinasampang kaso laban kay Pineda.
Ayon kay Prof. Teddy Atienza, hepe ng heraldy section ng NHI, nangangalap pa lamang sila ng mga video sa pag-awit ni Pineda ng Lupang Hinirang.
Pagkatapos umano nito ay saka nila isusumite ang report sa NHI board na siyang magdedetermina kung kakasuhan si Pineda at saka ito iaakyat sa DOJ.
Gayunman, ayon kay Atienza, nakahanda naman silang patawarin si Pineda sakaling humingi ito ng tawad ngunit sa kondisyon na tutulong ito sa kampanya ng NHI na maituro sa publiko ang tamang pag-awit ng ating Pambansang Awit.
