John Fernandez Raspado of Baguio City bested 35 other candidates to win the Mr. Gay World Philippines 2016 title. He also won eight other awards, including Best in National Costume, Mr. Popularity and Mr. Photogenic.
The other winners were Bench Ortiz from Pangasinan, 1st runner-up and Best in Swimwear; and Khalil Vera Cruz from Zamboanga del Sur, 2nd runner-up and Best in Formal Wear. The coronation night was held at the UP Theater Diliman.
The program was hosted by Paolo Bediones, Kristine Caballero Aplal and Karla Paula Henry (Miss Earth 2008) with celebrity guest judges Ruffa Gutierrez, Lorna Tolentino, John Lapus and director and talent manager Maryo J. It’s a different, exciting kind of love that the main characters in Star Cinema’s latest offering “The Third Party” find themselves in. The characters are played by Sam Milby, Angel Locsin and Zanjoe Marudo who are appearing together for the first time in a movie.
Angel said that if she accepts the kind of love situation she (as Andi), Max (Sam) and Christian (Zanjoe) are put into (a circumstance made them live together under one roof), it’s because “malawak kasi ang pananaw ko sa pag-ibig.” Andi and Max are former college sweethearts but they broke up and after several years, they meet again, with Andi hoping to rekindle the flame of love between them. But Max already has a new love – Christian.
Zanjoe, who worked with Angel in “One More Try,” Star Cinema’s entry to the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival, has played a gay role in the past, but in “The Third Party,” he said “more than the gay plot, the movie is about friendship.”
“The Third Party,” described as “a quirky and irreverent modern love story,” is directed by maverick filmmaker Jason Paul Laxsamana (“Babagwa,” “Love Is Blind” and “Mercury Is Mine”). The script was written and developed by Patrick Valencia and Charlene Sawit-Esguerra.
Opening tomorrow in theaters nationwide, “The Third Party” also stars Alma Moreno, Cherry Pie Picache, Al Tantay, Matet de Leon, Beauty Gonzales, Carla Martinez and Odette Khan.

In love again!
Actress and author Rita Avila is falling in love again – but with the same person, her husband FM Reyes, who directs her in the series “Magpahanggang Wakas.” This is the second time they are working together as actor-director, after “Marinella” which was Direk FM’s directorial debut 15 years ago.
“I remember being impressed by his directing skills, while he was intimidated daw with me, because I never reacted to his instruction, but during the take, I surprised him for doing exactly what he wanted from me,” Rita recalled. “He was amazed at how quiet I was, reading a book in a corner when I wasn’t needed before the camera. We fell in love while doing ‘Marinella.’”
On “Magpahanggang Wakas,” where Rita plays the “palengkera” aunt of Arci Muñoz, the two should be having a comfortable working relationship but Rita said, at first, they felt awkward on the set.
“Me calling him Direk, and he calling me by my name… the first time, I felt both excited and scared because I know how meticulous he is with each detail – looks, emotions, tone, rhythm, etc,” she said. “The first few days, I would throw up out of tension. But later, we became comfortable with each other, maintaining an actor-director relationship on the set.”
As author, her latest novel “Wanna Bet On Love” was launched successfully during the recent 2016 Manila Int’l Book Fair at the SMX Convention Center.

Book publisher ventures into filmmaking

Ms. Ma. Teresa Cancio of Goodwill Bookstore, one of the oldest bookstores in the country (it turns 78 this year), has steered her family’s publishing business towards many successes. Aside from Goodwill Bookstore, their other companies include EDCA Publishing and Distributing Corporation and Katha Publishing Company, which have been part of the Filipinos’ learning and discovery through books and other publications. Now, Cancio wants to prove she can also succeed in another field - filmmaking.
She has two in the can: “Higanti” and “Pusit.” She intends to submit the second to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Coincidentally, both films star one of our most versatile actors, Jay Manalo. “Pusit” is directed by Arlyn dela Cruz, whose book, “A Lifetime of Freedom,” was published by Katha Publishing in 2012. “Higanti,” on the other hand, is a story of revenge megged by Rommel Ricafort.
Cancio explained Jay wasn’t intended to be the lead actor in both films, but “fate” had it that he became the lead star of both film ventures.
“It’s a welcome coincidence as he showed wide range in acting that’s truly admirable. In each film, Jay used a different approach in characterization,” Cancio lauded.

In a recent media launch tendered for Negros-based Piaya Network, company executives Anthony Leo Aguirre (president), JR Gumabon (chief legal officer), and Tony Aguirre (board member) announced that starting this month, the network will go nationwide via Cignal Cable Channel 56.

Fil-Australian actress Nathalie Hart displays full frontal nudity in her movie “Siphayo (Dismay)” set for showing tomorrow in cinemas nationwide. Making her role more erotic is her having father-and-sons (played by Allan Paule, Luis Alandy and Joem Bascon) as lovers in the movie.
Multi-awarded director Joel Lamangan laid down his requirements for the role right from the start.
“Namangha ako sa ganda niya (Nathalie) but I told her that my major requirement from her is full frontal nudity. I explained to her why, and at first natigilan siya but after that initial hesitation, she did not have second thoughts doing it,” he said.
Nathalie confirmed this, adding “it’s a role of a lifetime” that she couldn’t pass up. “My character (named) Alice is complex and manipulative,” the budding actress said.
Also in the cast are Maribel Lopez and Elora Españo. Written by Eric Ramos and produced by BG Productions International, “Siphayo” is rated R-26 without cuts by the MTRCB. The movie will have its world premiere in New York this month.

No rest for Dana
“The Disappointments Room” is a psychological thriller starring Kate Beckinsale as Dana, a woman looking for a fresh start. Together with her husband and their five-year-old son, she leaves the city life and moves into an old mansion in the countryside. The house badly needs a restoration, and it is the perfect project for Dana (an architect) as she moves on from a painful past.
Beckinsale saw the project as an opportunity to explore a character at a psychological crossroads. “The central theme of this woman who isn’t sure if she is going mad or if things are really happening to her was intriguing. D.J. Caruso wanted to take it in a direction where it was more than just a horror movie, which appealed to me. Dana has gone through trauma, but she keeps showing up for her life, and it’s a brave thing to do.”
“The Disappointments Room” also stars English stage actor Mel Raido as Dana’s husband, and Duncan Joiner as their son.
Distributed by Viva International Pictures and MVP Entertainment, it opens in Philippine cinemas tomorrow.

Movie producer Baby Go is in Kazakhstan for the 12th Eurasia International Film Festival where her film “Area” is among those in the Main Competition. Directed by Louie Ignacio, it stars Ai-Ai delas Alas and Allen Dizon.
The film festival in the former Soviet Republic runs till Oct. 20. The awards ceremony will be held today, Oct. 1, and Ai-Ai is supposed to join them. In “Area,” Ai-Ai is a daring and serious dramatic actress, and the producer said “Ako ay talagang natutuwa sa kanya.”
Baby, whose main business is real estate, admitted she never had any inkling about showbiz and especially producing but when she met Joel Lamangan through a common banker friend, her world changed. She became passionate about producing films. Luckily, she has not encountered any problem with her stars, staff and crew.

“Lahat sila talented, cooperative and supportive, that’s why I feel so lucky. I always tell them, magtulungan tayo para tuloy-tuloy ang trabaho natin.”
Some of Baby’s films have won awards in various film festivals. Allen Dizon won as Best Actor (for Mel Chionglo’s “Iadya Mo Kami”) at the Salento Int’l Film Festival in Italy. Louie Ignacio’s “Child Haus” won in the Best Children category of the Bangladesh Film Festival. “Lareana,” another Chionglo film, won at the Gawad Tanglaw Awards.
Baby’s production company has made 13 films in three years’ time.

He may not be a fashion designer anymore on account of his physical disability due to stroke but once popular designer Rikki Jimenez remains active in civic work. Just recently, his Rikki J. Jimenez & Friends Foundation, Inc. (RJFFI) donated copies of the book “Rizal’s True Love” to 10 public high schools in Quezon Province.

My Only Hope

Your Song Presents: My Only Hope is the weekly ninth of Season 8 every Sunday after ASAP '08 over ABS-CBN.

My Only Hope tells the story of nine young individuals who are faced with crucial decisions in their lives. Keeno (Gerald Anderson) takes his girlfriend Jessie (Niña Jose) and her brother Arnold (Carlo Guevara) to the hotel owned by his family in Boracay. Keeno is running away from the suffocating environment of home, while Jessie is haunted by guilt because of an accident she had after going on a joy ride with Keeno. Meanwhile, April (Kim Chiu) wins a free trip to and hotel accommodations in Boracay on her birthday and takes her brother August (David Chua) and friends Jhun (Enchong Dee) and Yang (Regine Angeles) with her. While still grieving over the unjust death of her father, April is also trying to define her friendship with Jhun whom she is beginning to fall for. By chance, April and Keeno are forced to attend a party together one night. Just when these two people from different worlds start to find some common ground, Jessie’s guilt pushes her over the edge and cuts short their budding relationship.

They both have romantic feelings for each other but Jhun continues to suppress his emotions out of his desire to become a self-made man first.
• Niña Jose as Jessie Singson/Ashley Singson (The Scarred Beauty) - She is the emo girlfriend of Keeno whose pessimism becomes worse after a traumatic hit and run accident which has scarred not only her face but also her whole disposition. Her guilt has eventually led to her violent death during her and Keeno's trip in Boracay. On the other side of the character, Ashley is the twin sister of Jessie who suddenly falls in love of Jhun.
• Regine Angeles as Maria Angela "Yang" Gonzales (Your Royal Highness) - She is a devoted girlfriend of August and almost like a sister (or even a mother) to April. Her stubborn will to work for all three of them later results to a big fight between her and August.
• Alex Gonzaga as Cefelita "Fifi" Madrigal (The Yoga Diva) - She works as a master healer in the health and wellness center owned by the Alejandros. Though she is persistently courted by the rich and dashing Rick, she remains indifferent to him because she is already in love with someone else.
• Xian Lim as Enrico "Rick" Alejandro (The O.C. kuya) - With his inherent eye for business, he has always been the favorite son in the family. He never fails to accomplish his father's wishes contrary to Keeno who has often let him down. Fifi turns out to be his love interest.

To avoid Multiply's fate, Social networking platforms must advertise to cut through

In Asia Pacific where there is a mix of local, regional and international social networking site, a clear marketing, content and audience strategy is required to stand out in this crowded space.

Failing which, experts say, they might end up in the same situation as Multiply, a Indonesia-based E-commerce and social networking site which recently filed for liquidation and will shut down for good on September 30.

The 12-year-old platform, which operated on a E-commerce model, had big dreams. It previously told The Drum it hoped to bring 100 original pieces of content from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to its platform by mid-2020 through the Hooq Filmmakers Guild, an annual initiative to find new film talent in Asia.

However, Hooq announced at the end of March it was pulling down the shutters for good. It had not been able to grow sufficiently to offset escalating content costs and the continuous operating costs of an independent OTT distribution platform, according to its statement.

In addition, Hooq said it has not secured additional funding from existing or new investors. The platform had previously raised an initial $70 million in 2015 and the next funding round lifted it to $95 million in 2018, but it has had no publicly announced financing since 2018.

Lee Walsh, the vice president of media activation for APAC at Essence says the success or downfall of OTT platforms typically comes down to two things: marketing strategy and funding.

He points out that up until its liquidation announcement, Hooq subscription was offered as a complimentary service as part of select Singtel mobile phone bundles. When a platform's content can be accessed for free, he says it can be hard attracting paid subscribers in the future.

“Especially on international content, consumers can choose from leading global video streaming services like Netflix. Creating and licencing content is also incredibly expensive. To put this in perspective, ‘The Crown’ series reportedly cost Netflix US$130 million to produce,” he explains to The Drum.

“Furthermore, Hooq had the challenge of creating local content across five very different Asian markets. For instance, different programming would be required to resonate with subscribers in Indonesia compared to India. At the same time, without a large subscriber base to fund original programming, the quality and volume of offerings can suffer.”

Prerna Mehrotra, the managing director for media group in APAC at Dentsu Aegis Network notes Hooq tried to boost their user uptake by testing different models in the last few years. For example, lowering prices and introducing cheap daily plans in South East Asia, adding free content, ad-funded access, partnerships with Grab and a new brand campaign in late 2019.

Despite all these, she says Hooq failed to entice users and only reached around 80 million user mark in its life span, which could be put down to limited spend in brand building.

“Hooq did have a first-mover advantage when it launched five years ago but with growing clutter, expanded consumer choices and poor subscriber uptake it seems Hooq was not able to grow sufficiently to deliver satisfactory returns to cover escalating content and operating costs,” she says.

“The news of its abrupt closure was surprising and likely to have been induced by Singtel’s cost-cutting in response to Covid-19.”

Like many other brands, OTT platforms must regularly advertise to create awareness about their programming and get new users to signup, says Laura Quigley, the managing director for South East Asia at IAS.

She adds, with the support of Singtel, Warner and Sony, she would assume they had access to funds. However, success cannot be guaranteed through the running of campaigns alone because OTT platforms remain largely at the mercy of subscriber loyalty, as there are no long-term contracts binding the users and they can opt-out anytime.

“In the beginning, Multiply focused on social networking content and expected that people would pay for it and found out the hard way that youthful, local content was what appealed to their audiences in the region,” she explains.

“They also discovered that while Singapore has the highest per capita GDP in the world, audiences in Hooq’s territories of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand are much less willing to pay for something they expect to be free. And unfortunately simply making content legally available did not stop content piracy, so there were a few factors involved.”

The Golden Lion award bestowed upon “Ang Babaeng Humayo (The Woman Who Left)” at the recently concluded 73rd Venice Film Festival is, according to its lead star Charo Santos, “a celebration of Philippine Cinema.”

Asked why she agreed to do the film, effectively ending a 17-year hiatus from acting, she said, “I did it simply out of passion.”

Apparently, Charo has long wanted to work with film director Lav Diaz, intrigued as she is with his body of work. She also fell in love with the “Humayo” script.

“Bonus na lang ang award for a job well done,” Charo said.

“Ang Babaeng Humayo” is about Horacia, a former school teacher who spent three decades in jail for a crime she did not commit. After getting released from prison, Horacia returned to her ancestral home only to discover shocking events had happened to her family.

“I was drawn to Horacia’s story,” Charo said. “It’s always a challenge to (do roles that) transcend humanity and choose to do good.”

The movie is produced by Cinema One Originals and Sine Olivia Pilipinas, and distributed by Star Cinema. Also in the cast are John Lloyd Cruz, Mae Paner and Cacai Bautista among others. “Ang Babaeng Humayo” starts its nationwide run tomorrow, Sept. 28.

Perfect chemistry

Regal Entertainment’s latest rom-com offering, “My Rebound Girl,” showcases perfect chemistry between lead stars Alex Gonzaga and Joseph Marco.

It’s the same chemistry Mother Lily and Roselle Monteverde noticed seeing the two first work together as a love team in the TV adaptation of the Koreanovela “Pure Love.”

Directed by Emmanuel de la Cruz, the feel-good movie “My Rebound Girl” has Alex playing the role of Raquel or Rocky, dubbed as the “Pambansang Rebound Girl.” Her father wanted her to go with him abroad, but Rocky declined, putting up a café business with some partners, including boyfriend Timmy.

But when things were falling into place, Timmy, the group’s main financier, backs out to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend. The business was saved with Rich (Joseph) coming into the picture.

“My Rebound Girl” is Alex and Joseph’s biggest break as a tandem. From being a host, singer, comedienne and author, Alex moved on to headline the TV5 series “Inday Bote.” She has also appeared in several movies.

“My Rebound Girl” opens tomorrow in theaters nationwide.

EWTN - Chaplet of the Divine Mercy

Rosanna Roces and Assunta de Rossi-Ledesma: popularized flicks of 2001 are La Vida Rosa and Hubog

Rosanna Roces also known as Osang and Assunta de Rossi-Ledesma, both of them are starers in Chito Rono's La Vida Rosa (A Rosy Life) and Joel Lamangan's Hubog (Wretched Lives) (2001).

Two popular sexy movies released in September and December 2001.

In La Vida Rosa, we finally see hooligans in their everyday conditions - living, loving and hoping for a better life. Givng flesh to these hoodlum characters in the film are Diether Ocampo and Rosanna Roces.

Directed by Chito Roño, La Vida Rosa casts Roces and Ocampo as con artists who get involved in all sorts of criminal activities: kidnapping, carnapping, theft, etc. They actually operate under the supervision of an underworld boss, played by Vic Diaz.

When greed gets in the way of their illegal operations, they have a falling out with Diaz and, later, with his assistant, Pen Medina. Roces and Ocampo then begin to live in fear – with danger constantly lurking behind them.

La Vida Rosa doesn't necessarily plead for sympathy and understanding for these unlawful elements in society. The movie merely depicts the every day lives of criminals the way it is in real life - minus the sinister laughter we often hear in most Tagalog movies.

In this film, we see hooligans also living ordinary lives - without necessarily spitting out bullets everyday for breakfast. And so we see Rosanna Roces here playing a doting mother to her son and a dutiful daughter to her own Mom, portrayed by Liza Lorena.

And what interesting role Liza Lorena plays here in La Vida Rosa. She is a blind woman who – to while away time – sits by the church door to ask for alms. At the end of the day, this supposed beggar – believe it or not – is fetched by a service car.


Liza is also made to age here way beyond her years. But despite the difficulty of the role and the fact that she had been away for so long, Liza goes through the old and blind woman part with much ease – proof that she’s still one of the country’s finest actresses. (I believe she was at her best in Oro, Plata, Mata and in Miguelito: Ang Batang Rebelde.)


Playing the bastard son of Rosanna Roces in the movie is Jiro Mano, one of the young talents in Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s Muro-Ami. Once this movie is shown in commercial theaters, this kid – mark my word – will become the toast of Philippine cinema. He's a brilliant child actor – even better than Lester Samonte who wowed local and foreign audiences (during film festivals abroad) with his excellent performance in Gil Portes'; Saranggola. He and Rosanna Roces have such great chemistry between them, you’ll end up relishing in your mind all their scenes together even long after the movie has ended.


Diether Ocampo, Rosanna’s partner in crime (and even in bed), had already shown marked improvement as an actor (he was so wooden in his early films) in Bakit Pa? and in Bukas na Lang Kita Mamahalin (both by Jose Javier Reyes). But here in La Vida Rosa, his performance is even a hundred times better.


And Rosanna Roces? I’m not saying this only because we work together in a television show. If you don’t believe me, see the movie yourself once it opens in downtown theaters within the next few weeks and I think you will agree with me that she had already ensconced herself as one of the best actresses in Philippine movies because of this film. Insome of her scenes, in fact, she reminds me of a young Rosa Rosal (one of the greatest we have) in the classic film, Anak-Dalita.


Actually, even in her old, sex films like Basa sa Dagat and Patikim ng Piña, Rosanna was already showing flashes of brilliance – which was quite a feat considering that those movies were, well, trashy and exploitative.


Fortunately, she had her chance to redeem herself as an actress in Ligaya ang Itawag Mo sa Akin and in Ang Lalake sa Buhay ni Selya under the guidance of Carlos Siguion Reyna. In fact, I thought that those two films would already be the pinnacles of her film career. I was wrong. Here in La Vida Rosa, she even gives an even more sterling (and far more colorful) performance compared to both Selya and Ligaya.


Her best scene in the film is the part where she confronts Pen Medina and, later, drops one of her delicious trademark Osang one-liners. If only for this scene, La Vida Rosa is already worth watching.


However, I assure you that each scene in this film is really worth your time and money. This movie may be dark and executed in film noir style, but is still highly appealing to viewers - thanks to the magnificent orchestration of the various cinematic elements under the baton of director Chito Roño.


La Vida Rosa has everything viewers are looking for in movie: drama, action, suspense, sex and even humor (provided mostly by Rosanna). All these elements put together, however, do not come out like tasteless and watered-down chopsuey. On the contrary, each one is brilliantly staged and meticulously executed. The film’s finale – done ala Bonnie & Clyde – shows the most inventive deaths (I’m not saying who died though) ever presented on the local screen. For a change, we don’t see a character gasping for breath and begging not to be brought anymore to the hospital. It is so different from those usually syrupy Tagalog movie endings that are already starting to come out of our ears.

Actually, it had been quite sometime since we had a Filipino film of top quality shown in local theaters.

Joel Lamangan returns to Baseco Compound once more for Hubog, this year's third Best Picture in the recently-concluded Metro Manila Film Festival Gabi ng Parangal.

Written by Roy Iglesias, the time frame of Hubog covers the period between EDSA II and EDSA III. (Although they could have done away with these political events - and the story structure would still be in shape.) Amidst the squalor that is Baseco, we see the lead character, played by Assunta de Rossi, trying to eke out a living for herself and her retarded younger sister, Alessandra.

Three tragedies hit our heroine in close succession: Her mother (Jackie Castillejo) dies, she is fired from her job as sales clerk in a department store and the shanty where they live is destroyed by a strong typhoon. (The last event is already part of cinematic license because I don't remember Metro Manila being hit by extremely bad weather between EDSA II in January and EDSA III in May of this year.)

With no one else to turn to, Assunta is forced to accept the generous offer of friend Jay Manalo (who works as a bodyguard for some big shot) for her and her sister to live in his house.

One evening, she is seduced by Jay Manalo and - when she succumbs - she becomes his common-law wife. Eventually, she unmasks him and discovers his true colors: He is a wife-beater and murderer.

To compound her problems, she finds out that practically the entire male population of their community has been molesting her retarded sister in exchange for some cheap toys and hamburgers.

Hubog has a lot of highly-charged dramatic moments from beginning to end. But in spite of the over-the-top dialogues, none of the scenes come out mushy nor overly sentimental. Credit goes to the creative mind of director Joel Lamangan who brilliantly stages all the scenes in this film.

Lamangan should also be commended for properly guiding all the cast members of the film - particularly Assunta de Rossi who really deserves to win the Best Actress plum in this year's Metro Manila Filmfest.

I first noticed Assunta's sensitivity as an actress in the final episode of the Red Diaries trilogy where she plays the battered wife of Carlos Morales.

Then, she also delivered another performance in the Insiang adaptation of the drama anthology Larawan on Channel 7 toward the last quarter of the year. In Hubog, it is clear that she has already matured as an actress.

The outstanding performance of Alessandra de Rossi in Hubog no longer comes as a surprise to a lot of people. After all, she was already impressive in her acting debut in Carlos Siguion Reyna's Azucena one year ago. Here in Hubog, we see - at long last (courtesy of Alessandra) - the portrayal of a retardate that does not irritate the movie audience. Her Best Supporting Actress win is also well-deserved.

Jay Manalo and Wendell Ramos (who plays Assunta's taxi driver boyfriend) also benefit from the guidance of Lamangan. As a result, they both deliver very good performances in the movie.

Why, even Joanne Quintas does well (as Jay Manalo's ex-live in partner) even in her brief parts and even briefer dialogues.

The only thing that bothers me about Hubog is its anti-poor stance. In the whole movie, there is not one poor character worthy of emulation. No, not even Assunta de Rossi.

In the film, we may laud Assunta for looking after her retarded sister, but she is not exactly the best person to guard her own purity. Even in the film’s opening credits, she is shown having pre-marital sex with Wendell Ramos as the entire nation is busy changing its President.

And then, there are those scenes that show the squatters as nothing but a bunch of mercenaries who will all troop to EDSA, Greenhills and Malacañang at the sound of the cash register.

Of course, we cannot blame Lamangan for portraying the poor in this light because, well, it seems like that was exactly what happened during that bloody May 1 assault on Malacañang. (Now, it’s me who might be branded anti-poor!).

TV Commercials

Philippines advertising industry is self-regulated. The Philippine advertising industry adopted an Advertising Code of Ethics essentially to promote efficiency in processing applications and resolution cases and avoid costly litigation in regular courts. The earliest Advertising Code of Ethics dates back to the Philippine Board of Advertising (PBA) established in 1974. In 1989, the PBA was renamed Advertising Board of the Philippines (ADBOARD) and was mandated by the Implementing Rules and Regulations of R.A. 7394 or The Consumer Protection Act to ensure that all advertising materials conform to its Code of Ethics. The ADBOARD Advertising Content & Regulations Committee (ACRC) had been the main implementing arm of advertising self-regulation in the Philippines until March 31, 2008 when the Ad Standards Council (ASC) took over this function.
The Association of Broadcasters of the Philippines, a self-regulatory organization representing most television and radio broadcasters in the country, limit advertising to 18 minutes per hour, a move taken to help "promote public interest."
In this case some TV broadcasters have to remove TV logos (like ABS-CBN, TV5 & GMA) before starting a commercial break. Also, all commercial content and advertisements will start (right after for most TV shows will break) before or after TV program announcements/etc. Some TV commercials to be aired requires ASC clearance if the content has trivial facts and testimonies.
Since television was introduced to the Philippines in 1953, they used imported TV advertisements until 1960, the same way in which they used billboard advertisements during the American period. In the 1960, P&G paved their way to start the first local TV advertisement.
In 1966, when the Philippine TV turned from black-and-white to color, Colgate-Palmolive was the first to advertise in color.
Some ads have the following notice indicated at the during or at the end of the commercial depending on type of products.

No leaflets, posters and similar outdoor advertising materials may be posted, except inside the premises of point-of-sale retail establishments. TV Commercials

Philippines advertising industry is self-regulated. The Philippine advertising industry adopted an Advertising Code of Ethics essentially to promote efficiency in processing applications and resolution cases and avoid costly litigation in regular courts. The earliest Advertising Code of Ethics dates back to the Philippine Board of Advertising (PBA) established in 1974. In 1989, the PBA was renamed Advertising Board of the Philippines (ADBOARD) and was mandated by the Implementing Rules and Regulations of R.A. 7394 or The Consumer Protection Act to ensure that all advertising materials conform to its Code of Ethics. The ADBOARD Advertising Content & Regulations Committee (ACRC) had been the main implementing arm of advertising self-regulation in the Philippines until March 31, 2008 when the Ad Standards Council (ASC) took over this function.
The Association of Broadcasters of the Philippines, a self-regulatory organization representing most television and radio broadcasters in the country, limit advertising to 18 minutes per hour, a move taken to help "promote public interest."
In this case some TV broadcasters have to remove TV logos (like ABS-CBN, TV5 & GMA) before starting a commercial break. Also, all commercial content and advertisements will start (right after for most TV shows will break) before or after TV program announcements/etc. Some TV commercials to be aired requires ASC clearance if the content has trivial facts and testimonies.
Since television was introduced to the Philippines in 1953, they used imported TV advertisements until 1960, the same way in which they used billboard advertisements during the American period. In the 1960, P&G paved their way to start the first local TV advertisement.
In 1966, when the Philippine TV turned from black-and-white to color, Colgate-Palmolive was the first to advertise in color.
Some ads have the following notice indicated at the during or at the end of the commercial depending on type of products.

Transportation to end common rail station row

The Transportation Department said it expects to end by next week the dispute over the location of the common station that will link Metro Manila’s overhead train system in Quezon City .

“Hopefully by September 28, all the four stakeholders will sign the common station [agreement],” Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said, referring to SM Prime Holdings Inc., Ayala Land Corp., Metro Pacific Investments Corp and San Miguel Corp.

“The only thing missing right now are certain technicalities which include the access either overpass or underpass. I think the design issue is about to be addressed with the blessing of the DPWH [Department of Public Works and Highways]. So, you will have the common station soon,” he added.

Tugade had said the common station would be built between SM North and  Trinoma mall.

San Miguel, the proponent of MRT 7, preferred SM North as the location of the common station under a 25-year concession agreement with the government.

SM Prime earlier secured a Supreme Court stay order, barring the department from transferring the location of the common station to Trinoma mall of Ayala Land Inc.

Transportation decided to relocate the common station to Trinoma from SM North, saying the government could save P1 billion from the transfer.

To resolve the conflict with the SM Group, the Department of Transportation and Communications proposed building two common stations, one near The Annex at SM City North Edsa and the other beside Trinoma Mall.

Under an earlier agreement between SM Prime Holdings and state-run Light Rail Transit Authority, the common station would be situated beside The Annex at SM City North Edsa. SMPHI has paid the government P200 million for the naming rights for the proposed station.

MPIC chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan earlier said the best solution to resolve the issue on common station was to build it somewhere between The Annex at SM City North Edsa and Trinoma Mall.

Pangilinan said the two common stations for MRT Line 3, LRT Line 1 and the proposed MRT Line 7 would be inefficient.

The Common Station at the TriNoma will connect the LRT-1, MRT-3, and the future MRT-7 line. The project will also involve construction of head-to-head platforms for LRT 1 and MRT 3 with a 147.4-meter elevated “walkalator” to MRT 7 on North Avenue.

LRMC earlier proposed to Transportation the construction of an interim station between SM City North Edsa and Trinoma to connect the existing LRT1, MRT3 and the planned MRT7.

“The idea is to have just one station that will be ideal for us and for everyone because all the lines will just meet in that station. It has to be within that triangle of Trinoma and SM,” MPIC president and chief executive Jose Ma. Lim said.

Lim said if the proposed interim station concept became acceptable, it could later become a part of the permanent station.

‘Saintly’ Aljur

Yes, in his new film, “Ang Hapis At Himagsik Ni Hermano Puli (The Agony And Fury Of Brother Puli),” Aljur Abrenica is saintly, a far cry from the usual rugged yet hunky persona he projects onscreen.

The movie, directed by Gil Portes and produced by Rex Tiri of T-Rex Entertainment, is now in select theaters nationwide.

Also starring Louise delos Reyes, Enzo Pineda, Menggie Cobarrubias, Kiko Matos, Markki Stroem, Vin Abrenica and Allen Abrenica in an introductory role, “Hermano Puli” tells the story of Apolinario de la Cruz, better known as Hermano Puli, a Filipino religious leader from Lucban, Tayabas (now Quezon) who founded the Cofradia de San Jose exclusively for native Filipinos.

It is said that before this, Hermano Puli tried to join an order for preachers in Manila but was rejected because of his race. He decided to work as a lay brother at the San Juan de Dios Hospital where he studied the Bible along with other religious writings.

The Cofradia de San Jose was successful and it grew to have more than 5000 members. But soon its existence came to the knowledge of the friars. On Nov. 1, 1841, colonial military forces captured Hermano Puli and he was tried and executed.

After more than 20 years, it has helped thousands of Filipinos through medical, dental and surgical missions, medical assistance program, feeding projects, livelihood projects, scholarships and relief assistance to victims of flood, fire and other calamities including conflict situations.
Equally worth mentioning is the Dialysis Center Project of the foundation, which is in partnership with the City Government of Manila. This project, which provides free dialysis sessions to poor Manileños, started at the time when Dr. Loi was still First Lady, wherein she helped build a dialysis center in Malacañang.

Beep™ card expands usage to RRCG P2P buses

Mega Manila commuters can count on their beep™ card for rides on another point-to-point (P2P) bus line.

AF Payments Inc. announced that it has implemented its tap-and-go payment system in RRCG Transport’s P2P buses from Alabang Town Center (ATC) to Greenbelt 1 (Makati City) following a successful public trial last week.

The route operates from 5:30 AM to 8:30 PM with a bus that leaves every 30 minutes. The promo fare (extended until further notice) is P50, while the one-way discounted fare for senior citizens, PWDs, and students is P40. For concessionary beep™ cardholders, the discount is automatically deducted while students who wish to avail of the discount will have to pay in cash. There will be selling booths stationed at the ATC and Greenbelt 1 terminals for those who want to purchase or reload their beep™ card.

“After our rollout in northern Metro Manila P2P buses, we’re catering now to commuters down south. The RRCG Transport P2P bus service is a welcome option for commuters from the south. We are pleased that riders can use the multi-purpose beep™ card to pay for their fares,” said Peter Maher, President and CEO of AF Payments Inc.

The RRCG Transport premium P2P service aims to provide a more convenient and reliable transportation system to residents of southern Metro Manila. These buses provide free Wi-Fi to passengers and are equipped with CCTV cameras for additional security. Compartments underneath have provisions for storing bikes, wheelchairs, and other equipment.

The P2P bus service system was created by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to help improve traffic as the buses travel nonstop from the terminal to the drop-off point. It also aims to ease commuter woes by cutting travel time compared to normal multi-stop buses. The P2P system currently has routes from Trinoma-Makati and Ortigas-Makati. More P2P routes will be added in the next few months.

The beep™ card is a tap-and-go payment system accepted in all three elevated railways (LRT 1, LRT 2, and MRT 3), select bus lines and at the Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX). It can be purchased for P20, is reloadable and valid for four years. Offsite reloading partners are also now available. Businessman marks 92nd milestone
Successful businessman (Harrison Plaza among other ventures) Antonio Martel marked his 92nd birthday this year but unlike before, he opted for a quiet Sunday dinner with only family (wife, children and grandchildren) in attendance.
A hearty eater at his age, wife Belen is glad Tony only takes two kinds of pills: His maintenance for blood pressure and aspirin.
The party is a far cry from the one last year held at the Main Lounge of Manila Polo Club. It was a Filipiniana event with 400 guests. They had the Bayanihan dancers, the Pangkat Kawayan, the Madrigal Singers and other performers.
The year before, when Tony turned 90, he had his birthday party at the Isla Ballroom of the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel with 500 well-wishers.

LRT-MRT common station agreement to be signed this month

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade has confirmed that the agreement on the LRT-MRT common station will be signed this month.

The common station is set to be built between Ayala Land’s Trinoma Mall and SM North EDSA in Quezon City. The station would connect the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), and the proposed MRT Line 7 in Quezon City. According to Tugade, stakeholders Ramon Ang, Vice-Chairman, President and COO of San Miguel Corporation, Manuel V. Pangilinan, Chairman of TV5 Network, Philex Mining, Philex Petroleum, and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC) and Jaime Augusto Zóbel de Ayala II, chairman and CEO of Ayala Corporation, chairman of the board of directors of Globe Telecom, Bank of the Philippine Islands, and Integrated Microelectronics Inc. (IMI); vice chairman of the board of directors and member of the Executive Committee of Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI); vice chairman of Manila Water Company, Inc.; and co-chairman and trustee of Ayala Foundation, Inc., have agreed to finalize the project after a private meeting with him.

“We tried to meet separately and collectively with all the stakeholders. The last meeting was done yesterday with no less than the heads, stakeholders meeting with me, in a private meeting,” Sec. Tugade said.

Tugade also confirmed that SM Prime Holdings agreed on the location of the common station between The Annex at SM City North EDSA and Trinoma Mall. Tugade also explained that the stakeholders saw the importance of having one single station and that they agreed on the intention to not burden commuters in making them walk distantly.

“What we have basically agreed upon, number 1, all of them saw the importance of 1 single station. All of them saw the difficulty of making people walk to do connectivity between LRT’s and MRT’s,” he explained.

The location of the common station, however, has yet to be finalized. The current court battle between SMPH and ALI impeded this decision.

On September 28, 2009, SM Prime Holdings  had a deal with the LRT Authority to construct the common station in front of The Annex at SM City North EDSA.

On January 25, 2010, SM Prime Holdings gave 200 million pesos to LRTA for the naming rights of the common station. But on May 30, 2013, former DOTC secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya decided to transfer the location of the common station near Trinoma Mall. The case reached the court but SM Prime Holdings loss the case. The 200-million peso cash bond is still in the possession of LRTA and will be sent back as soon as possible.

The DOT is proposing a budget of P55.47 billion for 2017, 25 percent higher than this year’s budget.

The great equalizer

The LRT-MRT common station in SM City North Edsa, which aims to connect the LRT Line 1, MRT Line 3, and the proposed MRT Line 7, has been in the government’s pipeline for several years now. Unfortunately, there have been delays in the construction due to the technicalities and disagreements among parties involved.

During the Department of Transportation budget hearing last Friday, I had the chance to inquire on the development of this project. According to Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, the parties involved have finally agreed to proceed with the construction. My question is, what exactly was their agreement? Where exactly will the common station be?

During the 14th Congress, I took part in crafting a resolution to construct a common railway station at SM City North Edsa.With the convenience of the commuters in mind, we believe that a common station would ease the daily transportation grind of the working class. Our resolution originally proposed to construct the railway interchange in front of SM City North Edsa. The alignment was changed during the previous administration as the North-end station of the MRT Line 3 was relocated beside TriNoMa Mall, an Ayala property. We would like to revisit this new design of the LRT-MRT common station in North Edsa as we hope to avoid the blunder of the Gateway Mall connection, where commuters have to walk approximately 700 meters to transfer from MRT Line 3 to LRT Line 2. This kind of set-up favors only the interests of the mall owners and not of the working class. In other countries such as Hong Kong and New York, interchange stations only require commuters to go up or down a platform or walk a few meters to transfer railway lines. Why can’t we implement the same here?

The government recognizes the big role of the country’s top corporations in making the LRT-MRT common station project possible. SM Prime Holdings Inc. together with the Light Rail Manila Consortium (LRMC) is the concessionaire for the operations, maintenance and extension of LRT-1, of which Metro Pacific Light Rail Corp. (MPLRC), a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investments Corp., is the controlling shareholder, and the Universal LRT Corp. (ULC), a unit of San Miguel Holdings Corp., should collaborate to construct a bona fide LRT-MRT common station in SM City North Edsa. We have to make sure that the deal does not favor anyone but the public.

We in the minority firmly believe that the concept of mass transit is the great equalizer between a rich man and a poor man. To paraphrase, a developed country is not where everybody rides a private vehicle; it is one where the rich and the working class ride the train together. As a prime advocate of long-term traffic solutions and as one of the initiators of the construction of the common station, I commit to be proactive in ensuring that this project gets done the soonest. My only appeal to the public is to remain patient as this construction would affect the current traffic condition. Rest assured, it will all be worth it.
