Apl.de.ap inspired by kids to inspire kids (Celebrity World by Crispina Martinez-Belen)

Among his latest campaigns aimed at the youth is “Do The Moves,” a song that went viral on social media a month ago. The song was first launched via the music channel MYX.
It was revealed some time after that “Do The Moves” is Rexona’s theme song for its summer campaign.
Mar Corazon, Rexona brand manager, said, “Song and dance is always a good way to appeal to teens, especially with the rising popularity of dance music. It’s a really fun and upbeat song that, I hope, will get people dancing. We also wanted to impart the importance of daily hygiene to teens in a fun and exciting way.”
Collaborating with Apl.de.ap on “Do The Moves” is Sarah Geronimo, along with Enrique Gil and Elmo Magalona.
“The song is very fun and upbeat. It is like we’re trying to encourage the kids to express themselves and do more through dance and music. So the song is quite fun,” said Apl.de.ap.
“It is a great collaboration with the talented Ms. Sarah G. We all know that that girl is talented but when you see her turned-on it’s like, ‘Damn, she’s amazing!’ So, definitely we’re trying to inspire the kids to do more,” he added.
The catchy and danceable music plus the vibrant performances of the celebrities (as seen on the music video) helped build the song’s popularity on social media.
So as a songwriter, how does Apl.de.ap keep up with today’s youth?
“Paying attention to what’s going on, going out and seeing what’s out there, keeping myself up to date… That’s how I keep inspired. So, it’s like, the kids are inspiring me and I’m inspiring them back.
“They’re the ones that keep me going, like, coming up with new songs and new dance moves. On my part, I help them dream big,” he replied.
Apl.de.ap’s next plan is to help students and teachers from Tacloban rise through the challenge brought about by typhoon “Yolanda” via some new rap songs that would help rekindle their passions.
Apl.de.ap said, “I want to inspire the traumatized students to go back to school; I also want to lift the spirits of the teachers to teach again after suffering grief from the loss of loved ones and properties in Tacloban because of the typhoon.”

Cris Villonco, perfect as Molly in ‘Ghost the Musical’

We’d like to say Cris Villonco is ideally cast as Molly in “Ghost the Musical,” which Atlantis Productions together with Ten Bridges Media Corporation is presenting at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City from April 25-May 11.

This is not only because of Cris’ wide-eyed innocence and fresh beauty, but mostly because of her innate acting and singing prowess.

Cris’ hairstyle is also reminiscent of Demi Moore’s in the film version. But it wasn’t intentional. Cris has had the ’do for a year already. Cris said that it actually veers from the hairstyle worn by the character as depicted in the West End and Broadway versions of the musical.
CRIS VILLONCO with Christian Bautista in ‘Ghost the Musical’
Playing the role of Sam in the musical directed by Bobby Garcia is Christian Bautista.

Cris maintains that she neither watched the movie nor listened to its soundtrack before rehearsals.

She said, “I didn’t want to be influenced by what I see and hear, I want to do it my own take on the role.”

On the contrary, Christian said, “Pinanood ko siya to know what nuances to apply, at may mai-dagdag ako personally kahit konti…”

A veteran of 20 theater performances, Cris started her acting career when she was only nine years old.

Her grandmother, showbiz industry stalwart and one-time chairperson of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Armida Siguion-Reyna, was a great influence for sure.

Cris graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with concentrations in Music and Economic Development. Before returning to theater, Cris worked for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue Manila and Asia Society Philippines.

Also starring in “Ghost the Musical” are Ima Castro as Oda Mae and Hans Eckstein as Carl.

4th Bulihan Festival Opens Today

In a recent interview with Sampaloc, Quezon Mayor Emmanuel Torres, he proudly announced the holding of the 4th Bulihan Festival (April 23-26), inviting everyone to attend the event, which showcases the culture, traditions, and products of his town.

Now on his third and last term as mayor of Sampaloc (formerly Barrio Dingin, renamed Sampaloc after a big tamarind tree that stood in the middle of the barrio; was officially declared a town in 1902), Mayor Torres said that as legacy, “I want Sampaloc to be known as a peaceful and progressive town.”

He added, “We are doing a lot of projects to attract local guests and tourists to come and visit our town. We aim to make our municipality a must-see tourist destination in the Philippines.”

Mayor Torres added that he’d always wanted to highlight the Bulihan Festival.

“This festival gives jobs to our residents, while promoting tourism along the way. There’s so much fun and excitement here so I hope more people would come to discover Sampaloc now if they haven’t,” he said.

He has encouraged his constituents to invite friends from all over the country to join the four-day festival, which coincides with the town fiesta.

To be staged today is a food show dubbed “Lutuing Sampalukin,” with 14 barangays participating. Native delicacies will be sold.

The Payas contest will be held on April 24. Residents along the parade route are encouraged to decorate the exterior parts of their houses with colorful buri and other indigenous materials to go with the theme “Blooming Sampaloc.” There are 46 houses vying for the cash prizes: P25, 000, 1st prize; P20, 000, 2nd prize; and P15, 000, 3rd prize.

The “Paradang Bayan 2014” will take place on April 25, followed by the awarding of the “Search for Natatanging Anak ng Sampaloc.” On April 26, the “Lunesan sa Ilog Festival” will be held at the Maapon River in Kakati, where residents will join a boat race and hold picnics by the river.

The processing of raw materials used in making buri can be witnessed by visitors at Mahabang Tanaw in Barangay Taquico. Watching the process will be a learning experience. Transforming buri into a variety of products is a unique experience only available in Sampaloc.

While in Sampaloc, don’t fail to visit the historic Tower House in Barangay San Isidro, which is made of yakal and adobe. Another landmark in the barangay is the Old House, built in 1924 and used as a garrison during World War II.

For nature lovers, there’s Hangga Falls in Barangay Bataan, one of the more popular sights in Sampaloc.

A visit to the town won’t be complete without one having crossed the hanging Guinto Bridge; a wooden link that only three people can cross at a time for safety reasons.

Philpop reveals top 12 songs for 2014

Philpop, the country’s premiere songwriting competition, has challenged budding, occasional and professional composers for years, amassing nearly 9,000 entries from Filipinos here and abroad since it started. Today, it is regarded as the breeding ground for brilliant songwriters.

Last year, the competition produced 12 diverse and exceptional compositions from both amateur and professional ranks, featuring different genres and styles. These top 12 songs have accumulated around 43 million hits on YouTube. The winning song, “Dati,” written by Thyro Alfaro and Yumi Lacsamana, performed by Sam Concepcion, Tippy dos Santos and Quest, got over 23 million hits – a testament to its overwhelming achievement.

This year, an impressive group of adjudicators from the music industry were on hand to examine the thousands of entries in four very taxing stages, until the top 12 was determined.

Philpop is proud to reveal its top 12 songs for this year, which will be included in the Philpop 2014 album produced and distributed by Universal Records to be made available on Spinnr.

The Philpop 2014 Top 12 songs are: “NGSB (No Girlfriend Since Break)” by Davey Langit; “The Only One” by Venelyn San Pedro; “Awit Mo’y Nandito Pa” by Ronaldo Sorioso; “Torpe Song” by Daryl Ong; “Babalikan Mo Rin Ako” by Soc Villanueva; “Song On A Broken String” by Jude Gitamondoc and Therese Marie Villarante; “Salbabida” by Jungee Marcelo; “Dear Heart” by Mike Villegas; “Hangout Lang” by Allan Feliciano and Isaac Joseph Garcia; “Qrush On You” by QYork’s James Palma aka Flava Matikz and Cedric Bonjoc aka Knowa Lazarus; “Kung Akin Ang Langit” by Cecilia Bocobo and Isaac Joseph Garcia; and “Langit Umaawit” by Ronaldo Sorioso.

One among them will emerge as the P1 million grand prize winner and this will be determined on July 26 at the Meralco Theater.

The foundation’s Executive Director Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, as with Board of Directors Noel Cabangon and Ogie Alcasid, are quite proud of this year’s crop of finalists.

The next step for the finalists is the production of the songs with some of the country’s top performers with the help of producer Ito Rapadas. They will also promote their songs extensively before finals night.

Philpop is presented by Smart, Spinnr and PLDT Telpad, co-presented by Maynilad, and Meralco. It is also supported by NLEX, Sun Cellular, TV5, First Pacific Leadership Academy, Metro Pacific Investments Corp., Philex, Sony, the Universal Records, Pinas FM, RX93.1, and MYX.

GMA Network will be airing phenomenal hit Asianovelas “My Love from the Star” and “Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo” for the first time on Philippine television starting today.

True to its promise of providing superior entertainment for its viewers, the Kapuso Network brings two well-loved Asianovela series in Korea and Japan to Filipino homes, which will surely capture the hearts and touch the lives of the Filipino viewers.

Following the success of the popular Koreanovela series “Endless Love” and “Full House,” GMA Network airs South Korea’s No. 1 romantic comedy sci-fi series in the first quarter of this year, “My Love from the Star.” It showcases an extraordinary love story about two people coming from different worlds, and how love literally and figuratively defies time and space.

Matteo (Kim Soo Hyun) is a cold-hearted alien accidentally left behind by his companions on earth some 400 years ago. Three months before he gets back to the star where he lives, he will meet Steffi (Jeon Ji Hyun), a self-centered but loveable actress who makes him wish he is an ordinary man.

Meanwhile, “Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo” is a Japanese adaptation of the popular love story based on a manga that even has live-action versions in Taiwan and Korea and was also produced as an anime.

Its story revolves around the lives of Kasey (Miki Honoka), a not-so-smart girl who secretly likes campus heartthrob Niccolo (Yuki Furukawa). When she finally finds the courage to confess her feelings for him, she will be rejected. Caloy (Yuki Yamada), Kasey’s good friend, protects her from Niccolo because he is in love with her.

The lives of Kasey and Niccolo will start to change when they find out that their fathers are best friends. Fate will bring them together when Kasey’s family moves in to Niccolo’s house after a meteorite destroyed their home. When Kasey decides to finally forget her one-sided love for him and just move on, Niccolo will kiss her and dare her if she can still forget him after that.

Catch the back-to-back pilot episodes of “Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo” and “My Love from the Star” this Monday after GMA-7’s “The Borrowed Wife.”

Thoughts for the Holy Week

If I remember correctly, there was one time na sign-off ang ABS-CBN Channel 2 noong Holy Week. IDK what year that was, pero it's been a long time since ABS-CBN 2 decided to not air any special programming and sign off for the Holy Week. that was, pero noong at that time, nagkaroon ng breaking news na pumanaw si Rico Yan, 11 o 12 taong nakaraan.

That was the following year: 1989 , 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001 & 2002.

Meat Free Friday Movement Launched Today

To be launched today before the conclusion of Via Crucis for Good Weather 2014, a penitential walk that will start at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Pasay City and will culminate at the newly rehabilitated Manila Cathedral, is the Meat Free Friday Movement.

It is a nationwide public relations campaign initiated by DZRV Radyo Veritas 846 that aims to generate awareness, acceptance and action among Filipinos, especially the Catholics to consider abstinence from eating meat on all Fridays throughout the year and not only during Lent.

This crusade, spearheaded by Radyo Veritas under the leadership of its president, Rev. Fr. Anton C.T. Pascual, encourages Catholics “to reexamine the prevailing signs of the times and to consider offering all Fridays throughout the year as a time to be mindful of our personal sins and the sins of mankind which we are called upon to help make amends in union with Christ Crucified through our continued abstinence from meat… Over and above the documented health, economic, social and environmental benefits of abstaining from meat during all Fridays, it heartens us to rekindle the sacred value of such a personal undertaking that reminds us, that as Christians, although immersed in the world and sharing its life, we must preserve a saving and necessary difference from the spirit of the world…”

The health argument is that “the World Cancer Research Fund has recommended limiting the consumption of red meat, pork and chicken because of its convincing link with colorectal and bowel cancer, breast cancer in women, heart diseases and obesity.”

As to the environmental argument, the UN Environment Program International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management concludes that “the world must reduce meat consumption to prevent climate change.”

This is a seven-kilometer penitential walk slated tomorrow, Good Friday. It starts at 5am at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Pasay City and will end at 10am at the Manila Cathedral where Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle will share his reflection and give participants blessing.

In inviting Catholics to Via Crucis 2014, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President Archbishop Socrates Villegas said, “The penitential walk encourages the Catholics to offer prayers and penitential sacrifices for the safety of the country from various calamities this year.”

Derek Ramsay now a certified Regal Baby (Celebrity World by Crispina Martinez-Belen)

Derek Ramsay is the newest Regal Baby, having recently inked a three-picture contract with Regal Films. Present during the contract-signing held last week at the Imperial Palace Suites, were Derek’s manager Jojie Dingcong and the mother-daughter team of Lily and Roselle Monteverde.

Projects lined up for the hunk actor-TV host include a movie opposite GMA Primetime Queen Marian Rivera, whom he will be working with for the first time.
PHOTO shows, from left, Roselle Monteverde, Derek Ramsay, Mother Lily and Jojie Dingcong
“Honored ako dahil I am now part of Regal Entertainment. Magaganda ’yung project na in-offer sa akin, especially the movie with Marian, kaya naman I am very excited, “ Derek said.

Derek is of course a box-office attraction. His blockbuster films include “The Unkabogable Praybet Benjamin,” with Vice Ganda, “No Other Woman,” with Anne Curtis and Cristine Reyes, and “A Secret Affair” also with Anne and Andi Eigenmann.

The actor was warmly welcomed by Mother Lily and Roselle into the Regal fold.

“I really liked the way they approached me. I was very comfortable with the way they approached me and talked about my projects with them. And I like working with people like that,” Derek added.

According to Jojie, Derek’s contract with Regal doesn’t limit him from doing films with other productions. “We’re not exclusive. Actually other than Viva and Regal, we’re considering signing up with ATP with Tony Tuviera, too. We make sure that Derek is free to work with any company even GMA Films or Star Cinema.”

Jojie added that they “welcome anyone” as long as they have a good project that Derek likes, even if it’s an indie.

Aside from being a big screen favorite, Derek is one of TV5’s primetime contract stars as well. He is set to do “Amazing Race Philippines 2” this year.

PCSO Chairperson Juico Celebrates Birthday

Ms. Margie P. Juico celebrated her birthday last April 10. She is the sister of 1974 Mutya ng Pilipinas winner (and Miss Asia pageant’s 2nd runner-up) Polly Penson who did “Bornebol, Special Agent” with the late great comedian Dolphy.

She is also the former assistant to LVN Pictures’ producer Dona Sisang de Leon’s granddaughter, Ching Escaler, whom she considers the best boss, next to then President Cory Aquino. She says Cory was hard-working and never uttered any unkind word against anybody.

A few years later, she was appointed as member of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office board. She would be appointed to the same position by Presidents Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Founder of the Yellow Ribbon Movement and editor of the book “Cory: An Intimate Portrait,” Margie is now the current PCSO chairperson. Her goal is to fulfill the vision of Pres. Noynoy Aquino in establishing universal medical and health-care services for the marginalized sector.

In a short span of time, she has introduced other games, established PCSO satellite offices in the provinces, simplified their work system, saved on operating funds, and transformed the office culture with the strengthening of PCSO’s core values.

She also facilitated the establishment of a state-of-the-art hospital facility exclusively for PCSO’s indigent patients by way of the new PCSO Charity Clinic at the Lung Center of the Philippines.

The Mowelfund, represented by Marichu VeraPerez and Boots AnsonRoa, has recognized Margie for her medical and dental missions. She also received an award from the province of Bulacan in the field of public service.

Active community involvement, Margie says, is the best assurance that medical and health-related services are made available to the public.

Celebration: Philippine Red Cross 67th Anniversary

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC), the country’s premier humanitarian organization, is celebrating its 67th Anniversary on April 15, 2014. Guided by its motto of “Always First, Always Ready, Always There,” the PRC provides timely, efficient and responsive services, especially to the most vulnerable of the Philippine population. Its mission is in accordance with the principles of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Red Cross (IRC) and Red Crescent Movement, of which the PRC is an active member.

PRC was created by Republic Act (RA) 95, Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) Charter, signed on March 22, 1947, and inaugurated on April 15, 1947. Its six major services — Blood Services, Disaster Management, Safety Services, Community Health and Nursing, Social Services, and Volunteer Service — embody the fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality of the global organizations with which it is affiliated.

RA 10072, the Philippine Red Cross Act of 2009, affirms the Philippines’ conformity with the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and Statutes of the IRC and Red Crescent Movement. It confirms the PRC as a voluntary, independent, and autonomous non-governmental society in the humanitarian field. RA 10072 changed the name from “Philippine National Red Cross” to “Philippine Red Cross.” The PRC has 100 chapters and sub-chapters nationwide carrying on a wide array of humanitarian services. There are more than a million trained volunteers who respond to emergencies and disasters. The “Red Cross 143 Program” deploys 44 volunteers in each of the nation’s 42,000 barangays. Its youth arm, Red Cross Youth, educates young Filipinos and provides them, through 97 chapters, the venue to use their skills, talents, and idealism in worthwhile activities.

The PRC was set up during Katipunan days when volunteers such as Trinidad P. Tecson, the “Mother of Philippine Red Cross,” took care of Filipino soldiers. The Malolos Republic formed a National Association of the Red Cross on February 17, 1899. The American National Red Cross (ANRC) opened a Philippine Branch on August 30, 1905. An independent Philippine Red Cross was created in 1934. Local Red Cross officials and ANRC reestablished the Red Cross in 1945. Aurora Aragon Quezon, the first PNRC Chairman, received Geneva’s recognition of PNRC on March 29, 1947. The PNRC became a member of the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on September 17, 1947.

We congratulate the Philippine Red Cross headed by Chairman Richard J. Gordon and Secretary General Gwendolyn T. Pang, its National Board of Governors, Administrators, Officials, Personnel and Volunteers, for being always at the service of the Filipino people in our Republic of the Philippines. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

Irma Adlawan as Edna, the OFW (Celebrity World by Crispina Martinez-Belen)

Several years back, government propagandists proclaimed Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) as the country’s new heroes.

We absolutely agree with the commendation as they have helped a lot in keeping local economy afloat. In fact, most economists would attest that, without them, Philippine economy would have long been derailed.
IRMA ADLAWAN
Note that the country’s almost 10 million OFWs remit an average of no less than $20 billion to the treasury. Also, imagine the purchasing power they provide their families.
However, some government officials, it seems, have made milking cows of our OFWs. To think that they already pay a huge price for their sacrifices. Imagine the pain of having to live abroad, away from your family for years.
This is what we see in the movie “Edna,” with award-winning Irma Adlawan in the title role.
Edna has been working abroad for 10 straight years. Coming home, she is surprised to see her family still in the same predicament she left them. What happened to the money she has been sending?
Worse, she feels detached from her family, who treat her as if she is a stranger. Years of toiling abroad practically destroyed the bond, affection and love they have for each other. How can she recapture the years gone by?
The movie comes in three parts: Edna’s life abroad, her arrival and her resolve.
“My role took so much out of me,” Irma revealed. “The concentration I had to do was so intense. It is the most challenging role I have ever portrayed to date.”
DIRECTOR-ACTOR Ronnie Lazaro with producer Anthony V. Gedang

Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli sing ‘All of Me’–and we all swoon (Tessa! by Tessa Prieto-Valdes)

Gold is the new black! Gold is also the color of summer heat. And “Gold” is the title of the top hit song of the ’80s band Spandau Ballet.
For my summer sizzling look, I chose gold and turned to sexy designer Charina Sarte for her figure-hugging and flattering creations that are truly head-turners. She made me a metallic-gold dress that I wore to the recent Spandau Ballet concert at Solaire Resort and Casino.
Being an ’80s girl, I can recall having a high school crush on lead singer Tony Hadley. Spandau was one of the leaders of the “new romantic” movement in the early ’80s, and a bunch of my friends joined me to watch the concert, including Tatler editor Anton San Diego and eventologist Tim Yap.
A big thanks to Solaire’s Joy Wassmer, who got us great seats and a backstage visit with Tony himself.
Exciting Italian dishes
Before the concert, we dined at Finestra, the fine-dining Italian restaurant that serves wonderful pasta and pizza. The delicious and exquisite dishes are created with the highest quality ingredients flown in from Italy. Chef Salvatore de Vincentis, who has won many awards, is the main boss in the kitchen and comes up with exciting Italian dishes all the time.
Solaire Resort & Casino is now a year old. Time flies and it is hard to believe it’s been a year since it opened its doors with the ribbon-cutting led by President Aquino himself.

After the concert, I went straight to Matteo Guidicelli’s birthday bash, hosted by Swatch, at Tipsy Pig Gastrobar in Pasig. Matteo is Swatch’s youngest and longest-serving ambassador. He has been with Swatch for 10 years. Swatch has thrown parties for Matteo since he was 14, and now for his 24th birthday, the bash was awesome and memorable.

Little princess
His ladylove, Sarah Geronimo, was also there and was treated like a little princess by Virgie Ramos. She looked so pretty and chic in a Victoria Beckham dress from Tita Virgie. Thanks also to Jappy Gonzalez of Univers and Homme et Femme.
People were drinking, dancing, singing and partying the night away. There were free-flowing drinks from the bar, a buffet spread of Tipsy Pig specialties and special birthday cakes for Matteo.
Rico Puno was one of the guests, singing “Just Once,” and showing that no one does karaoke better. Also hyping up the crowd were Randy Santiago singing “Tuloy Pa Rin Ako” and Christian Bautista and Vice Ganda doing a duet, “Please Be Careful with My Heart,” assisted by Richard “Sir Chief” Yap.
At midnight, it was back to a Happy Birthday song, but this time, it was for birthday celebrant and musical director Marvin Querido, who was also playing keyboards that night. Matteo, together with all the singers in the house, surprised Marvin with a yummy Costa Brava cake decked out in musical notes.
Christian Bautista and Cris Villonco also sang “Unchained Melody,” perfectly timed for their roles in “Ghost The Musical,” which opens April 25 and runs until May 11 at the RCBC Plaza.
Of course, the highlight of the night was Matteo and Sarah singing “All of Me,” delighting the entire crowd.
At the party, I chatted with Matteo’s father Gianluca Guidicelli, who recently finished his first full Ironman race in Melbourne together with lots of Filipinos and fellow Cebuanos like Jane-Jane Ong. The stories of the finishers are amazing.
My running buddy Raeanna Cranbourne told me that she had to intensely train and intently watch her nutrition intake. Good thing I recently discovered the Samsung Smart oven for my healthy eating lifestyle.
Digital appliances
Technology is ever evolving, but it has always been aimed at aiding everyday tasks. Samsung has taken on the higher pursuit of offering people a better lifestyle. Thus, armed with state-of-the-art electronics and a passion for innovation, the brand recently launched its new lineup of digital household appliances that will ensure we all have a happy home.
The Samsung Smart Oven includes features such as auto-cook for preprogrammed recipes like yogurt-making, dough proofing, and “Slim Fry” function. “Slim Fry” is what differentiates this from the typical microwave oven. Preparing meals no longer has to be an unhealthy experience, since this function cooks food to a crisp without any oil.
The Smart Oven also has other smart features like premium sensors that allow it to identify a food’s surface temperature. Thus, whether food is frozen, chilled or fresh, the Smart Oven can adjust its heat accordingly and food is never over- or undercooked.
Other new Samsung smart appliances include the new Smart Air-Conditioner, the new Food Showcase Refrigerator, and the Front Load Washing Machine with Eco-Bubble Technology. All Samsung appliances are outfitted with the Digital Inverter Technology, guaranteeing efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
On a final note, let me wish my fellow columnist and travel buddy Pepper Teehankee a happy birthday tomorrow, April 14 and .

Alma Concepcion graduating from second college course

If you’ve been wondering why former beauty queen-turned-actress Alma Concepcion hasn’t been very active in showbiz of late, it’s because she has been busy with her studies.

Alma, who was Binibining Pilipinas-International in 1994, is graduating on April 25 (and a strong candidate for cum laude, we heard) with a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from the University of the Philippines.

ALMA CONCEPCION
Actually, this is Alma’s second degree, having already finished International Business at Southville International School in Parañaque City prior.
As to why she has been so academically engrossed these past years, Alma said, “Ang showbiz kasi walang katatagan, pabugso-bugso. So when my son Cobie went to full day school sa Ateneo, I decided to go back to school as well. Nag-enroll ako sa UP to take up Interior Design.”
Alma belongs to the Carvajal clan — the late Florence Carvajal a.k.a. Dabiana was the sister of her mom Evangeline Carvajal, who was also an actress, like her grandparents. She has an upcoming indie movie with Joem Bascon titled “Ang Bagong Dugo.” She was last seen two years ago via ABS-CBN’s “Pintada” together with Denise Laurel, among others.
After her reign as Bb. Pilipinas-International, Alma became a Regal Baby. “Naka-four years din ako sa Regal. I made more than 30 movies for Regal. I also did some movies under Star Cinema.”
Alma considers her second movie under Regal Films “Sa Ngalan ng Pag-ibig” with Christopher de Leon and Lorna Tolentino, as her most significant. “Kasi from this movie, I got acting nominations. Dito ko na-confirm na marunong din pala ako umarte. I was also nominated for my performance in ‘Goodbye America.’”
Her acting career suffered a setback when Alma became a mom at 22. “I was fat for five years, I weighed 200 lbs. Thankfully, I’m now back to my old figure.”
Alma feels she’s ready to resume her showbiz career, but before she goes full-blast, she first has to take the board exam. “Bachelor Degree kasi ang Interior Design so may board exam,” she said.

Marian Rivera, A Sought-After Endorser
MARIAN RIVERA
Kapuso Primetime Queen Marian Rivera is one of todays’ most sought-after celebrity product endorsers — and with good reason. She has continued to prove herself quite bankable with her TV shows, including “Carmela: Ang Pinakamagandang Babae sa Mundong Ibabaw,” being consistent top raters. She has also been named FHM’s “Sexiest Woman in the Philippines” twice.

Just recently, Marian signed up with Diamond Laboratories, Inc. (DLI) to lend an exciting, fresh new look to the country’s leading slimming tea brand, Biofitea.

Present at the launch were Edrich P. Cabrera, president of DLI and his father, Roberto V. Cabrera, Jr., founder of DLI.

DLI believes that Marian’s looks, as with her enviable figure and unwavering confidence, personify the core essence of a Biofitea woman. DLI also believes that with Marian as the face of Biofitea, she will inspire the modern Filipina. Biofitea’s latest campaign is “Tiyan na Flat (Flat Tummy).”

Snooky Serna bounces back

We’re glad to know that actress Snooky Serna is once again quite busy with her showbiz career. She is a good actress and it would be a waste if her talent is not used properly.

We caught up with Snooky during her 48th birthday bash held at the business center of Pan Pacific Manila recently, where she announced that she’s now doing an indie movie.

“It’s entitled ‘Homeless,’ and it’s an exposé of sorts related to typhoon ‘Yolanda’,” she said.

Snooky added, “Maganda ang pelikula, directed by Neal Tan. Kasama ko dito sina Ejay Falcon who plays my son, Dimples Romana, and others.”

She related that the movie is based on true accounts involving typhoon survivors some of whom became either “prostitutes or beggars” following the devastation.

“It’s a story of how syndicates manipulated and took advantage of the victims of ‘Yolanda.’ ’Yung iba dinala dito sa Manila at dito ine-exploit. Totoo ang istorya, but iniba lang namin siyempre ang mga pangalan ng characters for obvious reason. I play a mother here. Namamalimos ako,” Snooky said.

She has no problems doing mother roles at this point in her career. “I’m a mother in real life so it’s okay. My eldest is Sam who is in his senior year taking up European Studies at De La Salle University. Si Sachi naman, 17, taking up Literature, sa La Salle din,” she shared.

Snooky has another movie project in the making, which she describes as “98% political.” She said, “Hindi siya indie, more on mainstream naman ito, but also directed by Neal Tan. Wala pang working title.”

Snooky, who is now managed by Mio Manansala, also has a new show “Medical HD,” that will air starting May 23 on Net 25.

She assured fans that she will be more focused on work this time around. “Yes po, member ako ng Iglesia ni Cristo (for) three years na. Nagbago na ang buhay ko for the better since then,” she said.

At her birthday party, Snooky also introduced us to her German business partner, Mark Munchmeyer. Their first project together is the distribution of a Korean product called Magic Patch Power Strip, a multi-purpose invention that Mark said, “has a lot of functions aside from being an effective pain-reliever.”

Family Values In TV Ad

A brand new TV commercial was launched recently by PLDT Home DSL on “Eat Bulaga” and it features a bright, handsome and precocious young boy named Diego Ledesma.

Seven-year-old Diego has tens of thousand of followers and this is due to the popularity of his online advice column “Ask Diego.”

Many would frown upon the thought of a child being on Facebook but they should know that values are paramount in the Ledesma household.

Diego’s parents, Paolo and Lara, monitor his Facebook page constantly, going on to delete offensive content sent by his followers. They help their son answer the more difficult questions about love, studies and bullying. They also help Diego type out the answers. Sometimes, Diego would also ask advice from his sister Trisha.

The Ledesmas are perfect for the commercial because they are the ideal example of a young, urban family that is tight-knit. They do things together even online, this, using multiple gadgets simultaneously.

That’s where PLDT Home DSL’s limitless and reliable family-sized connection really comes in handy.

“The ad revolves around how family members helps and support each other. The story is like a classic film. Hopefully, over the years, we would be remembered by the story. A story that is real, relatable and of course memorable,” said Gary Dujali, PLDT vice president and head for broadband.
