A Prayer For The New Year

Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world.  Matthew 28:20

I did something I rarely do: I wrote a letter to God about the year that is upon us.  I suspect some of my thoughts may mirror yours as well.  Listen in.

Dear Father, I feel a little overwhelmed right now—it's a collection of things that I know you can handle but presently I'm a little overwhelmed by life.  I know you have met me at every crossroads in the past, but this one seems to have kind of gathered "comrades of concern" and attacked things that I know aren't that important but still keep me awake at night.  It's rather annoying.

No, I haven't doubted the fact you will take me through this, but I just need your help for today.  You said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you," and that promise has my name on it, I am sure.  I remember how, a few days ago, you impressed upon me the truth of your word, "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him," but resting isn't just part of my DNA.  I always want to jump in and try to solve situations that only you can handle.  I guess that's my "thorn" in the flesh—at least one of them.

Yes, I remember how you have always met me and I know you will give me strength to do what needs to be done and the right time to do it.  Thank you for the assurance that you will walk with me through the New Year and bring across my path those who can help carry the load, and will give me the strength to do what you want me to do.

First, Lord, thank you for your grace and the promises of your word that have never, never failed.  I look back through my tattered Bible and see dates and memos to myself reminding me of your faithfulness and your help in the past.  As I've grown older a kind of strange thing happens.  I wake up with songs that I haven't heard for years humming in my head.  Maybe it's the result of growing older, but I really think it's your way of reminding me of truths I already know, like the one this morning, an old hymn written by Fanny Crosby.

"All the way my Savior leads me.  What have I to ask beside?  Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who through life has been my Guide?  Heav'nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell!  For I know, whate'er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well; For I know, whate'er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well."

Sometimes I have to remind myself of what I already know: nothing happens in the lives of your children that is beyond your watchful care.  The events that often seem so frightening or challenging are filtered through your hands.  And then what you told Paul when he was complaining about having a thorn in the flesh is still true: "Your grace is sufficient to meet every need."

Lord, you told the disciples, "Without me, you can do nothing," and, therefore, I know that I cannot rely on my strength but humbly ask you to take complete control of my life.  Grant that what appears to be a challenge will only be an opportunity to see your hand intervening, guiding, supporting and enabling.

One more request: please help me not only to accomplish what you want me to do in the coming year, but—far more important—to be all that you want me to be—more compassionate, more understanding, more loving.  Now, I'm ready, Lord.  Let's take on the day together.

Blackpink’s Rosé, Lisa reportedly preparing for solo debuts

Blackpink members Rosé and Lisa are preparing to debut as soloists, K-pop entertainment news site Soompi reported on Wednesday.

In the report, Blackpink’s management, YG Entertainment, confirmed that the 2 members of the 4-piece act “are preparing for their solo debuts.”

“Currently, they are getting ready to film their music videos,” YG said in a statement translated in the Soompi article.

The agency, however, did not disclose the release date for the solo songs.

YG added that member Jisoo “is busy shooting” for an upcoming television series, according to the Soompi report.

Jisoo is set to star in the drama “Snowdrop,” opposite heartthrob Jung Hae-in.

In 2018, Blackpink’s Jennie made her solo debut with the single “Solo.”

Blackpink is also preparing for their online concert, which will be held on January 31, 2021.

Blackpink was named the biggest music act in the world this year in Bloomberg’s Pop Star Power Rankings list.

Stage actor Bobby Tamayo shot dead four times inside home

Family and friends are seeking justice after unidentified suspects shot dead stage actor Bobby Tamayo four times inside his home Wednesday morning, Dec. 30.

The hashtag #JusticeforBobbyTamayo trended on Twitter following social media posts that the thespian was murdered inside his home.

Tamayo’s friends on social media said that there were no signs of robbery and the CCTV inside his home was covered.

A statement from the Gawad Sining Short Film Festival read: “Murdered early this morning. Four gunshot wounds. No signs of theft. Probably premeditated murder. Bobby Tamayo was a humble and kindly actor despite his accomplishments in the film industry. Enjoy our Savior Jesus’ presence, brother Bobby. “

Martin de Vera, voice-over talent, commented on Facebook: “RIP kuya Bobby Tamayo, you were an inspiration to me. I wanted to be an actor and was given the honor to work with you on a student film. You are so generous in sharing what you know, and thank you so much for teaching me acting while I work with you. Because of all your achievements, you are still humble and down to earth. Whatever happened to you, I hope we find justice. This world is too unfair to take someone like you for what they did to you.”

One of his current movies was “Bar Boys” where he played father of Rocco Nacino.

On Dec. 27, friends congratulated Tamayo after he was nominated for best supporting actor for the short film “Ang Bahagharing Uhaw sa Ulan” in the Gawad Arts 2020.

“Congrats Bobby Tamayo on the nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Gawad Arts 2020.It’s really a different kind, just like being possessed, it’s like there’s a different personality inside the body, so good. I remember when our scene is intense, all the crew can’t talk after your scene, everyone was so surprised with the performance you showed even us behind the camera, we were so annoyed with your character in the movie,” said Levilou Corpuz on Facebook.

WATCH: Patrick Sugui’s tearful wedding proposal to Aeriel Garcia

Former “Pinoy Big Brother” housemate Patrick Sugui and social media influencer Aeriel Garcia are engaged after two years together, the couple announced on Tuesday.

On Instagram, Sugui posted a photo of him with Garcia, who is seen wearing what appears to be a diamond engagement ring.

“I’ll love you forever, that’s all I’ll do,” Sugui wrote in the caption, indicating that they got engaged the night prior on Monday.

In her own announcement, Garcia shared a video of Sugui’s tearful proposal, with Elton John’s “Your Song” playing in the background.

Garcia was surprised with a setup inside a room, with rose petals on the floor, lined with lit candles.

“When I asked you to be my girlfriend, I told you na I wasn’t just doing this to have a girlfriend. I was looking for someone that I can marry and can love for the rest of my life,” he told Garcia, who can be heard crying.

“And today, I want to fulfill that promise,” Sugui said, before kneeling down with the ring in hand to ask Garcia to be his wife.

In her caption for the video, Garcia dedicated lyrics from Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” to her now-fiancé:

“I'm so glad you found me in time

You brought a lot of sunshine into my life

You filled me with happiness

You gave me more joy than I could ever dream of

And no one, no one can take your place.”

LOOK: Dingdong, Marian mark 6th wedding anniversary with beach getaway

Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes are dropping the long, cheesy messages this year as they mark their sixth anniversary as a married couple.

Instead, they posted identical photos of them at the beach accompanied by short but genuine messages for each other.

Keeping it simple, Rivera just wrote: “To my life... Happy 6th!”

Dantes followed Rivera’s post and said: “Obvious bang gigil na gigil pa rin ako sa iyo? Happy 6 years, my love!”

These past few days, Dantes and Rivera have been sharing photos from their beach getaway with their kids.

The two did not disclose their location.

Dantes and Rivera, who met in 2007 when they co-starred in the local adaptation of "Marimar," exchanged wedding vows in 2014 after more than five years of being a couple.

Aside from Zia, the two also have a son Sixto.

'Kinakabahan ako': Charlie Dizon does not want parents to see 'Fan Girl'

Charlie Dizon, who is the lead actress in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry “Fan Girl,” admitted she does not want her parents to watch her movie.

In an article by Push, Dizon said she is nervous for her parents to see her in intimate scenes with her leading man, Paulo Avelino.

“Hindi pa [nila napapanood]. Kinakabahan pa rin ako, sa totoo lang. Sinabi ko sa mommy ko na huwag niya panoorin. Pero kasi madami daw nagme-message sa kanya na mga friends niya kaya nababalitaan niya,” she said.

The 24-year-old actress said she and Avelino were not able to talk about how they will tackle those scenes before cameras started to roll.

Nonetheless, she trusted in Avelino and in the creative vision of their director, Antoinette Jadaone.

“Hindi namin napag-usapan ni Paulo 'yung mga eksena na 'yun so in my case, nabigla na lang ako. Pero nagtiwala naman ako kasi alam ko na planado din nila 'yun and alam nila 'yung gagawin,” she explained.

“Kumbaga na-warning-an naman nila ako dati na parang surprise din, para maging raw and mas natural 'yung magiging reactions ko. Nagtiwala na lang ako kay direk Tonette and kay Pau na mapapaganda namin 'yung eksena,” she added.

Dizon said she was fortunate to have Avelino as her co-star because he treated her well while they were doing the project.

“Naging mabait siya noong shooting namin. Kumbaga naging patient siya talaga at tinulungan niya ako para mas mapaganda 'yung mga eksena namin. And kahit hindi niya eksena, kahit eksena ko lang, tumutulong siya talaga,” she said.

Now that it’s out for streaming, Dizon is only hoping more people would watch “Fan Girl” through legal platforms.

“Noong una nakaka-feel bad na 'yun 'yung nakikita ng tao,” she said, referring to screenshots of Avelino’s frontal nudity that made the rounds online.

“Kasi iniisip ko na sana mas makita nila na maganda 'yung pelikula, mas may storya talaga at mas may sense. 'Yung iba kasi masaya sila na nakikita na ganun 'yung kumakalat na pictures. Pero thankful din [ako] sa mga tao na nanood legally and talagang nag-stay para panoorin 'yung pelikula kasi nagustuhan nila 'yung kabuuan ng pelikula. Kasi minsan 'yung photos na ganun na-a-out of context sa mismong story,” she said.

In the end, Dizon thanked everyone who has already seen the movie.

“Hindi nila alam ano namang pinanggalingan noong photos na 'yun, kung 'yun lang yung nakita nila. Pero thank you nga sa sumuporta lalo na nung nakita nila 'yun,” she said.

PH population to hit 110.8M in 2021 — Popcom

The country’s population is estimated to balloon to 110,881,756 in 2021, the Commission on Population and Development (Popcom) said on Wednesday, which is 1.45 percent more compared to the previous 109,480,590 at the onset of 2020.

But the commission noted that the population outlook might still swell at 111.1 million due to unintended pregnancies caused by the nationwide lockdowns during the pandemic.

“Interestingly, women of reproductive age, 15 to 49 years old, are estimated to have the greatest potential growth in numbers — an increase of about 337,193.  This increase will drive population momentum as more women are expected to give birth,” the commission said in a statement.

“With the increasing proportion of Filipino women of childbearing age, there is a need to intensify actions to ensure their access to family planning information and services to prevent unplanned pregnancies, especially within the context of the pandemic,” it added.

Popcom, citing a report by the University of the Philippines Population Institute and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in June revealed that around two million babies are expected to be born next year due to the current pandemic.

“This aspect also needs attention, as Filipino women need to have healthy and safe pregnancies given the risks from COVID-19,” Perez said. “We also need to ensure that Filipinos’ aspirations on having two children on average are attained, amid service reductions in family planning due to the pandemic.”

Based on the commission’s data, adolescents aged 10 to 19 years old will only increase to 38,224 next year. However, Popcom said that this age group will contribute a 21.04 percent rise in unintended pregnancies. This means that around 102,000 unintended pregnancies are expected in 2021 “as an after-effect by community quarantine-induced service reductions on family planning.”

‘Lingering issues’

“Our country still has one of the highest population growth rates in ASEAN. There are still lingering issues we all have to address as we usher in a new decade: management of limited resources in the face of climate change, unrestrained internal migration leading to congestion in urban areas, as well as the disturbing rise of adolescent and teenage pregnancy nationwide, among many others,” said Popcom’s executive director.

“It would still take a comprehensive approach that links government efforts to nongovernment organizations and the private sector—one that allows population programs like family planning to reach every community in all 42,000 barangays nationwide. We also enjoin our countrymen to do their part, as their decisions on family planning will affect our communities,” he added.

Popcom’s estimated figures for 2021 are based on geometric-method projections using the 2015 population census by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Filipino population expected to reach 110.8M by end-2021 —POPCOM

The Filipino population is projected to reach 110.88 million by the end of 2021, the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) said Wednesday.

This is an increase of about 1.4 million from the 109.48-million Filipino population at the onset of 2020.

"Our population next year will grow by a percentage of 1.31 and this is a continuing decline... Before, it was 1.68% in 2016," said POPCOM executive director Juan Antonio Perez III in an online  press conference.

Nonetheless, the figure could further reach 111.1 million if the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the disrupted family planning services, would be considered.

"About 250,000 might be added to our birth rate," Perez said.

The number of women of reproductive age or those 15-49 years old will increase by 337,193 next year.

“With the increasing proportion of Filipino women of childbearing age, there is a need to intensify actions to ensure their access to family planning information and services to prevent unplanned pregnancies, especially within the context of the pandemic," the POPCOM chief said.

Working population

The most notable increase in the Filipino population next year would be among the working age or those between 15 to 64 years old, which would reach 71.28 million — a million higher compared to this year.

This age group would make up 64.15% of the entire Philippine population.

According to POPCOM, this implies the need for the country to create at least a half a million new jobs next year, posing a huge challenge for the labor sector in the midst of the pandemic.

“The increasing working age population presents a prospect for economic gain because of potentially greater income and productivity it can generate. This is what we call an opportunity for demographic dividend," Perez said.

To reap economic benefits of this demographic dividend in the next five years, the members of the working population must be healthy, educated, skilled and gainfully employed. Otherwise, they can become dependents on the income of the family and on government services, he added.

Meanwhile, the number of senior citizens in the country will also exceed 10 million for the first time in 2021. They will comprise 9.07% of the population.

"They're not working, they are belonging to the dependent population together with the 0-14 age group," Perez said.

Former toothpaste model in PH now a leading man in US

HOLLYWOOD - This year, a Lifetime Christmas movie has something entirely new: a Filipino romantic lead.

In “Lonestar Christmas,” Marco Grazzini plays the leading man restaurant owner.

The actor said he’s glad to finally play a part that celebrates his Filipino side.

“I have to thank the producers and the writers for including that because it wasn't in the original script. They were ever so kind to include it for me. It was the first time that I've actually played a Filipino on screen. So that was an honor and it's nice to see the real world reflected on our screens,” he said.

The Filipino-Italian-Canadian actor is also the leading man in “Christmas Unwrapped.”

Though 2020 was tough for many, Grazzini says he is grateful to have the opportunity to have significant roles this year.

He joined the regular cast of the second season of the Netflix show “Virgin River.”

“Everybody from cast and crew has been so amazing and welcoming. I've never been a regular part of the cast of a show in my 15 years,” he said.

“At times it can be really tough, sort of like, coming in for a day or a couple days and sort of finding your place in there. You don't want to sort of mess things up. I've always been sort of looking for to be a part of a community or family within my workplace. And from day one, it’s felt like that on 'Virgin River,'” he added.

Grazzini said he was a very shy kid, but started hosting Filipino events in Toronto to help him grow his confidence.

It was when he went to the Philippines for six months in his 20s that he fell in love with performing.

“I adore what I do. From the first time that I set foot on a commercial set in the Philippines in Zambales on a Closeup commercial, it struck me. I was like, this is it. This is what I love to do. I love to tell stories. I love to put on a different character, see the world through their eyes and their viewpoint,” he shared.

Grazzini was also part of the comedy sitcom “Kim’s Convenience” streaming on Netflix.

He is also returning for the recently announced third season of “Virgin River.”

'Absolutely not true': Isabela lawmaker slams corruption allegations

A lawmaker said Tuesday that the Presidential Anti Corruption Commission (PACC) has no basis for accusing her of receiving kickbacks, a day after she was identified by President Rodrigo Duterte to be allegedly involved in corruption.

Isabela 4th District Rep. Alyssa Sheena Tan, who was among the 9 current and former lawmakers accused by the PACC of profiting from government’s public works projects, said "there is absolutely no truth in the allegations" that she owns construction companies which were awarded with projects in her district.

“I have never owned any construction company. I do not have any shares in any construction company," Tan said.

“This truth can easily be verified with the concerned government agencies that they (PACC) surely have access to,” she said.

Tan said she would cooperate with the commission in its investigation.

“Simula po nang ako ay pinagkatiwalaan niyo sa posisyong ito, ang bawat araw ng aking panunungkulan ay itinuturing ko pong pribilehyo mula sa inyo,” she said.

“At kung gaano ko po pinaghirapan ang tiwala ninyo ay ganoon ko rin pong kasigasig na pag-iingatan ito.”

Also included in the PACC list were Quezon City 5th District Rep. Alfred Vargas; Bataan 1st District Rep. Geraldine Roman; Northern Samar 1st District Paul Daza; and former Ifugao Rep. Teodoro “Teddy” Baguilat Jr., who all denied the allegation.

Aside from the lawmakers, Duterte also identified DPWH district engineers allegedly involved in kickback schemes.

He however noted several times there was no solid evidence to support the list prepared by the PACC.

2020 heroes: Frontliners who died battling COVID-19

Despite the danger posed by COVID-19, millions of health care workers around the world continue to report for duty, risking their lives to save others.

In the Philippines, more than 13,000 health workers have been infected with COVID-19. At one point, health care workers comprised of almost 20% of the Philippines’ total number of COVID-19 cases.

By December 21, the number of health workers who died due to COVID-19 reached 76.

Almost half of them died during the first few months of the pandemic, as hospitals got stretched by the influx of patients in emergency rooms and the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPEs).

Still, Filipino doctors and nurses put on a brave face and even found creative ways to protect themselves using plastic and garbage bags as makeshift PPEs.

On top of such problems, health workers are still facing inadequate pay and delayed benefits.

There were even reports of health workers who died without receiving their hazard pay.

We pay tribute to the more than 70 health workers who died while battling COVID-19. Among them are:

DR. GREG MACASAET

Dr. Macasaet and his wife Evalyn were anesthesiologists who tended to emergency room patients at Manila Doctors Hospital. Both of them contracted COVID-19 because of their frontline work.

Before his condition further worsened, he messaged friends: “The turn of events is just no longer going in my favor. The feeling you get, aside from extreme pains all over, difficulty of breathing and as if all life is being sucked from your body.”

“They will be putting cutdown lines and central tubes on me anytime soon. If they intubate me and place me on ventilator, then the game is almost over.”

Before he died in March, he appealed to family and friends to care for his wife and his son with autism. A relative said the couple made the ultimate sacrifice for choosing to be in the frontlines despite worries about their child with special needs.

DR. RAUL JARA

Jara was a former president of the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) and had been called "one of the great pillars of cardiology.”

He was among the first doctors who died from COVID-19 in March.

Progressive groups hailed him as a “people’s martyr,” especially since he was a doctor to political prisoners. A University of the Philippines article mentioned how he served as an activist physician during the Marcos dictatorship, treating patients in the underground movement.

Jara was not only a renowned cardiologist who chaired the non-invasive laboratory of the Philippine Heart Center, he was also an educator who previously headed UP College of Medicine’s cardiology training program.

DR. LEANDRO RESURRECCION III

Resurreccion was the head of the pediatric surgery division of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) when he died from COVID-19 on March 31.

PCMC said Resurreccion was “well known locally and abroad as forward looking in his vision for pediatric surgery especially in liver transplants which he was working on to the end.” He was the first frontliner from PCMC who died from COVID.

His son said Resurreccion once had an opportunity to live and work in Australia but he chose to stay in the Philippines because of the lack of pediatric transplant surgeons in the country.

Recalling the last moments of his father, Resurreccion’s son lamented how they were not even able to say goodbye to each other.

DR. MARCELO JAOCHICO

Jaochico was the provincial health chief of Pampanga and was most known for his service as a doctor-to-the-barrios.

His daughter Cielo recalled how Jaochico spent the last 16 years caring for patients in far-flung barrios, not minding the long mountain treks.

He was also a frontliner during the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda in Eastern Visayas and the eruption of Taal Volcano in January.

"Please do not remember him as someone who just died because of COVID-19. Sobrang dami niyang ginawa para sa bayan (he did so many things for the country)," his daughter said.

DR. ISRAEL BACTOL

Dr. Raul Jara's colleague, 34-year-old Dr. Israel Bactol, was among the young doctors who died due to COVID-19, also in March.

The PHA called him a “young, brilliant, promising doctor.” Bactol, who hailed from Nueva Ecija, was a doctor-to-the-barrio. He was a fellow-in-training at the Philippine Heart Center who later became a cardiologist at the Philippine Heart Center.

JUDYN BONN SUERTE

Suerte became the poster child of alleged government neglect for health workers after he died of COVID-19 in July. The Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRMMC) Union protested the decision to bring Suerte to another hospital for treatment. The group believes Suerte had a better chance if he stayed in the hospital he worked for.

According to the Alliance of Health Workers, Suerte was an elevator operator at JRMMC and that he should have been given special risk allowance. Under the law, only those directly tending to COVID-19 patients are entitled to special risk allowance but health groups argued that Suerte and other hospital workers should also receive the additional allowance because of the added risk of the COVID-19 pandemic.

DR. KHAREN ABAT-SENEN

Dr. Abat-Senen was the lone neonatologist in Valenzuela City. Her husband Dr. Jerome Senen said the two of them had been very careful and wore personal protective equipment when tending to patients because their two children were still very young.

But she still got infected and spent more than a month battling COVID-19. And just when her family thought she was getting better, she died in August after being confined for 44 days in the Philippine General Hospital.

Dr. Abat-Senen is remembered not only for her medical work but also her artistic pursuits such as singing, painting and photography. Before she died, she posted a song dedicated to health workers, including their mentors, who died because of the pandemic.

DR. SALLY GATCHALIAN

Gatchalian was a leading pediatrician and head of the Philippine Pediatric Society. She was also assistant director of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, which was the lone testing facility for COVID-19 during the early months of the pandemic. She was the 9th Filipino doctor to die due to COVID in March.

Her sister, television host Ruby Rodriguez, paid tribute to her sister in social media posts. A Metro post talked about how Gatchalian served as a caring doctor and a mother figure to many people, especially her patients.

NURSE THERESA CRUZ

Cruz’s death made headlines after her daughter revealed that she did not receive adequate hazard pay. Her family also filed a case against the Cainta Municipal Hospital chief due to alleged negligence, which led to her death.

Despite being exposed to a COVID-19 positive patient, Cruz was only given a rapid antibody test which turned out negative. She was swabbed for COVID-19 only three days before her death. Her positive COVID test result arrived another three days after she died.

Her daughter also disclosed that Cruz was only given P60 of hazard pay per day and that there was a lack of personal protective equipment in the hospital.

NURSE FAYE MARIE LUNA PALAFOX

Although Palafox tested negative for COVID-19, the head nurse was lauded by her peers for handling the hospital’s COVID-19 ward and ensuring the safety of fellow health workers. Her family said her official cause of death was respiratory failure. Reports said she spent her final days making sure nurses had their personal protective equipment before entering their unit.

There are many more health professionals who died due to COVID-19 this year. Not included in the government’s tally are those with different causes of death but still fought in the frontlines until they fell ill.

All of them sacrificed their own safety and the safety of their families to serve the country. In the battle against COVID-19, they are our fallen heroes. And they will always be remembered for their love and courage.

Do It Now!

But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?" Luke 12:20

Michael Landon was a regular in the Sala household for many years.  Every Sunday night after church, we headed for MacDonalds and then raced home in time for the program, Bonanza.  Landon, who died in his prime, once said, "Whatever you want to do, do it now.  There are only so many tomorrows."  He's right.

An unknown writer penned the following: "To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who has failed his or her exam.  To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby.  To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask an editor of a weekly.  To realize the value of ONE DAY, ask a daily wage laborer.  To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask two lovers who are waiting to meet.  To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who has missed the train.  To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask a person who has survived an accident.  To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, Ask the person who has won a silver medal in the Olympics."

Life is a series of todays which quickly fade into yesterdays.  Tomorrow is uncertain.  For Michael Landon—along with millions of people whose plans for the future never materialize—today is the only day which you own.  Recognizing the importance of today is not only sound psychologically, but it is biblical as well.  A quick computer scan shows me that the word "tomorrow" is found but 56 times in the Bible, but the word "today" is found over 200 times.

The Bible stresses the importance of doing things now, of listening to the voice of the Lord today, of making peace with God not tomorrow, but today.  Hebrews 3:7 says, "The Holy Spirit warns us to listen to him, to be careful to hear his voice today" (Living Bible).   Paul stressed the fact that the time we have now is a gift from God to use in making peace for tomorrow.  "Now is the day of salvation," he says in 2 Corinthians 6:2.

Today, thank God, most of the civilized world no longer uses gallows, but I recall reading where Samuel Boswell commented how facing the gallows sharpened a man's thinking.  When death stares you in the face, it does one of two things:  either causes absolute panic or else helps you reorient your life, rearranging your values, setting new priorities.

All people who have stared death in the face and survived have one thing in common:  what once was important is no longer important.  People become priorities and things rapidly become secondary.  I thought of that fact recently as I saw an interview with a group of individuals who had survived a plane disaster.  The forward cargo door of a jet plane malfunctioned, and a gaping hole was torn in the side of the giant 747.  Individuals suddenly disappeared, and survivors sat there—a foot away from the jagged edges in the side of the plane—wondering if they too would be sucked out into the darkness of the night.

Those who survived felt guilt that they should live while others died, but to a person, they said that this near disaster changed their lives for the better.  May I remind you of Michael Landon's words, "Whatever you want to do, do it now.  There are only so many tomorrows"?  Could it be that today's program is a wake-up call reminding you that just as life begins, so there is also an ending?  "The greatest shock in my life," said Billy Graham on a recent birthday, "has been the brevity of life."  Yes, and that came from a man who has seen more than three-score and ten birthdays.  Live for today and you will have no regrets tomorrow.

"The employees are all very happy to help," ani SM Supermalls President Steven Tan.

"We couldn't be happier, helping our kababayans... Amidst all our challenges, I think we still have so much to be grateful for," ani Susan Afan, managing director ng ABS-CBN Foundation.
