The Pia Cayetano-Paolo Abrera Affair: A story of the project "INQUIRER Lifestyle Series: Fitness.Fashion with Samsung" Fashion Show

Based on "El Presidente: The Story of Emilio Aguinaldo and the First Philippine Republic" courtesy of Scenema Concept International, CMB Films, and Viva Films, in cooperation with the San Miguel Corporation, Petron, Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Las Casas Filipinas de Azucar, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, Aishite Imasu 1941: Mahal Kita courtesy of Regal Entertainment Inc. and BASFILM Production, Inc., Sa'yo Lamang (a 2003-2004 Mini-Series) Story of Mayor Lito Atienza and his Wife Beng Atienza directed by Joel Lamangan and Dekada '70 courtesy of ABS-CBN Studios and STAR Cinema.

Narrated by Dennis Antenor, Jr. (formerly Dennis Guisado of YES! FM 101.1) and Jupiter Torres, a documentary film about the project in the life of the Philippines in the past 126 years.

After breaking free from the clutches of Spain on June 12, 1898, the country survived two more foreign invasions, a 20-year Marcos tyranny, and all the natural and man-made disasters that came in between and after.

Virtually all the nations of the world are heaping praise on the Philippines.

The tributes and accolades include wishes for progress and maturity as the country strives to overcome the regional economic crunch in its march toward the next millennium.

Aguinaldo read the country's declaration of independence from Spain at the main window of his Kawit mansion and waved the Philippine flag for the first time as the national anthem, composed by Julian Felipe, was played also for the first time.

The declaration of independence came after a series of decisive victories by the Katipuneros who routed some 250 Spaniards in the battles of Alapan, where the patriots prevented the hamletting of an entire town, and Binakayan, where they overran a Spanish arsenal.

That the victories came as tropical thunderstorms pounded Luzon in May and June of 1898 seems ironic in a time of scorching El Niño, eased only by occasional rains.

On December 9, 1985, the first issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer rolled off the press with its banner story— “It’s Cory-Doy”. It didn’t even have a slogan, and so atop its masthead was a kicker: ‘A slogan? Help us write one and win a prize.’ The maiden issue, all 30,000 copies, sold out at P2 each.

“The job of a newspaper is to report the news. That in a word, is what the Philippine Daily Inquirer is all about,” said the paper in its first editorial ‘A Statement of Purpose, Separating News from Views,’ written by its first publisher, the late Max Soliven.

Noting that they lived in very interesting times, the editorial said the PDI will “chronicle these times with candor, and we trust, with courage.”

It was one of three alternative dailies that bannered the flight of the Marcoses at the height of the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution.

The first Inquirer issues looked like an unmade bed, recalled managing editor Jose Ma. Nolasco. ‘We didn’t have money, we didn’t have a printing press. We had stories on page one. [Those issues] will never win any design competition,” he said.

“When we established the Inquirer, we didn’t think that one day it would be No. 1. Never did it cross our minds,” Nolasco said in a recent strategic planning session.

Chronicling the mounting public opposition to the Marcos regime, PDI’s circulation grew from just 30,000 to more than 250,000 by the time the snap election was held in February 1986.

Twenty-three-year-old Stephen Salcedo was pronounced dead on arrival at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila around 5 p.m. on July 27, 1986. His death was caused by multiple concussions in the head and body.

In just five years, in 1990, the Inquirer overtook another daily to become the biggest circulated broadsheet in the country as validated by a circulation audit done by Sycip, Gorres, and Velayo. Since then, the Inquirer has kept its lead as the paper with the biggest circulation and readership.

In time for the launching of "INQUIRER Lifestyle Series: Fitness.Fashion with Samsung" project. The fashion show project was supported by various companies, such as: HSBC, The Peninsula Manila, Ayala Corporation, San Miguel Corporation, SM Investments Corporation, MVP Group, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, GMA Network, Inc. (GMA), People's Television (PTV) Channel 4, TV5 Network (ABC-5), RPN-9, IBC-13, Regal Entertainment, Inc., Solar Entertainment Corporation, STAR TV, VIVA Entertainment, Inc., various music and movie outfits, fast-food chains and food companies.

Initially, Senator Cayetano, along with Rina Go-Thorp and Paolo Abrera as co-guest models of the Manila Show. Their fathers former Sen. Renato Cayetano died on June 24, 2003 and while Caloy Abrera was died on April 17, 2004.

former swimmer Akiko Thompson, Atty. Amanda and Leica Carpo, models Phoemela Baranda and Trishan Cuazo, Manny Osmena’s wife Svetlana Pangan-Osmena and Ernie Lopez’s wife Jeena Llamas-Lopez was the first batch of guest models for the show in 2003.

Swimmer Enchong Dee, powerlifter Ruby Gan, and educator Fely Atienza were added to as co-guest models of the event in August 2006. Mister Dee was a student at De La Salle University in 2006. The logo was designed by Alizza Buitong-Mistades in July 2007.

The Makati City Government went on to say that the streets will close due to the construction of the millennium celebration stage at Ayala Avenue and Makati Avenue.

Many events happened at the time of the project, such as the Eat Bulaga! Silver Special on November 18, 2004, at the Clark Centennial Expo in Angeles City, Pampanga, the "Hello, Garci" controversy, the 2005 and 2007 Southeast Asian Games, the PhilSports arena stampede, typhoons that hit Metro Manila and other province,s and the sinking of ferries.

Fashion becomes less of a spectator sport when sport itself becomes the fashion.

This year’s competition theme is “The Philippines in the New Millennium”.

The 21st Century and 3rd Millennium is an important milestone for mankind. It brings opportunities for quantum leaps in total human development. Our business, health, entertainment, fashion, legal, media, political, religious, and sports personalities are challenged to give a unique visual representation of what they see in the Philippines in the New Millennium.

Co-presented with Samsung, along with Shokubutsu Hana and Systema Tooth and Gum Care, it drew guests who cut across the fields of fashion, business and commerce, arts, media and entertainment. With the support of HSBC and Peninsula, the show had 12 sought-after designers melding their creations with the latest brand collections: Kipling with Vic Barba; Fila with Lulu Tan-Gan; Nike Golf with Anthony Nocom; Speedo with Louis Claparols; Adidas with Patrice Ramos-Diaz and Rhett Eala; Marks & Spencer with Arcy Gayatin; Aigle and Oxbow with Rajo Laurel; Bench with Joey Samson; and Puma with Ivarluski Aseron and Randy Ortiz.

“Fitness.Fashion” also scored a coup with the runway debut of fitness enthusiast and sports advocate Sen. Pia Cayetano. Other guest models were Akiko Thompson, Amanda Carpo, Rina Go, Paolo Abrera, Phoemela Baranda, Svetlana Osmeña, Jeena Lopez, Enchong Dee, Ruby Gan, Fely Atienza, Trishan Cuazo, catwalk queens Tweetie de Leon-Gonzalez and Apples Aberin-Sadhwani, and Inquirer’s own Tessa Prieto-Valdes and Leica Carpo.

As of the latest reports, the 2015 First Quarter Consumer and Media View survey of The Nielsen Co., the Inquirer remains the top choice of 52.7 percent of ABC1 newspaper readers in major urban areas in the country.

The Manila Bulletin was a far second with a 34.3-percent readership, and the Philippine Star, placed third, with a 16.6-percent readership.

The Inquirer has also consistently ranked among the Top 1,000 companies in the Philippines.

The country’s paper of record, the Inquirer has chronicled the country’s history over the last quarter century. From the 1986 Edsa Revolution, the Inquirer was at the forefront of covering major upheavals, momentous events, and powerful stories that changed the course of the nation’s history.

The installation of Aquino’s widow Corazon Aquino in 1986 to her death in 2009 led to the election of her only son Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III as President in 2010; from the unforgettable visits of Pope John Paul II in February 1981 and January 1995, and Pope Francis in 2015, to the devastating earthquake in 1990, the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 and the horrific Supertyphoon “Yolanda” in 2013; from the Senate vote to end the US military bases agreement in 1991, to the Centennial of Philippine Independence in 1998, when the Inquirer first published in full color.

Unequaled in its courageous reporting, the Inquirer played its watchdog role in the ouster of the corruption-plagued administrations of Joseph Estrada and the ascendancy of his predecessor, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

To get back at the Inquirer for its exposure to his involvement in corruption, Estrada instigated an ad boycott against the paper on July 3, 1999, that lasted five months. The Inquirer survived on support from its loyal advertisers and readers who sent encouraging letters and even donations to keep the Inquirer going.

Fittingly enough, the Inquirer broke the biggest expose in decades—the P10-billion pork barrel scam perpetrated by businesswoman Janet Napoles. The groundbreaking series by Inquirer senior reporter Nancy Carvajal, under the meticulous guidance of editor-in-chief Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc, brought about wide-ranging reforms in the government’s handling of taxpayer money and sent at least three influential senators behind bars.

The pork barrel scam also earned Carvajal and the Inquirer all the major journalism awards here and abroad for two years running.

With interviews by Thelma Sioson-San Juan, Apples Aberin, Irene Perez, Cheche V. Moral and Fran Katigbak.

"Fight for SEA Games crumbs under way."

Peping sees Thai victory, Philippine athletes check-in

By Ernesto A. Gonzales, Sports Feature Editor
Published on page A29 in the December 6, 2007 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

Nakhon Ratchasima—At least, the overall winner of the two preceding Southeast Asian Games started to shape up midway through the competition.

This time, however, everybody acknowledges a runaway victory for host Thailand—long before the opening of the 24th edition of the Games, which is set for Thursday at the main stadium of the Nakhon Ratchasima Sports Competition Center here.

"There's no way they're going to lose. It's the birthday of their King," said Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco, Jr., who led the first big batch of 591-strong Philippine contingent that arrived here Tuesday

"The fight is for second place."

It was an uninspiring but realistic assessment of the Filipinos' chances in this biennial sports festival which they finally dominated for the first time two years ago on their third stint as hosts.

Like Vietnam, which prevailed in 2003 while setting a record of sort as the first home team to win on its first hosting stint, The Philippines did not emerge as a serious title contender until after the first few days of competition.

This time, Thailand, the overall runner-up in the last two editions, has been conceded the championship. And it could yet serve as the highlight of the nation's year-long celebration to mark the 80th birth anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The King, who occupies a revered place in the history of the competition-he was a sailing champion of the Games when it was still known as the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games until 1977-celebrated his birthday Wednesday.

With action going full blast here and in Bangkok and Pattaya on Friday, the Thais are already in command with 18 golds, 19 silvers and seven bronzes in shooting. Singapore was in second with 10 golds, followed by Vietnam with eight victories and Malaysia and Myanmar with two each.

Meanwhile, a 139-man group headed by Philippine Sports Commission chair William "Butch" Ramirez, and including 51-man athletics contingent and the women's basketball team, planed in Wednesday. The third and largest group of 155 will check in Thursday.

After winning 113 golds in 2005 on top of 84 silvers and 94 bronzes, the Philippines hopes to win at least 485 events to be disputed in 42 sports to secure second place over Vietnam.

Admittedly not as prepared as in 2005, when the president's husband, Jose Miguel Arroyo, raised P 160 million to fund their training, the Filipinos hope to somewhat make it a merry Yuletide season with victories in, among others, both divisions of basketball, which was not held two years ago because the country was under FIBA suspension.

The Filipinos also look forward to churning out outstanding efforts in the pool when Erica Totten, Jaclyn Marissa Pangilinan and Maria Georgina Gandionco will go for Olympic berths; in billiards where Asiad champion Antonio Gabica joins former world 9-ball king Ronnie Alcano and other traditionally rich medal sources like taekwondo, boxing, wushu, traditional boat race and athletics.

The Philippine women's football team took a 0-10 beating at the hands of Vietnam and put its fate in the hands of defending champions.

Joey Berba finished second in the seeding run of mountain cycling behind a Thai, while the two sepak takraw squads in the hoop event were in the middle of the pack after Wednesday's initial action.

The men's team of Danilo Alipan, Harrison Castanares, Joel Carbonilla, Hector Mencarion, and Metodio Suico, Jr. was fourth after two rounds. At the same time, the women's squad of Irene Apdon, Desere Autor, Sarah Jane Catain, Gelyn Evora, and Rhea Padrigo also held forth.

The Opening Ceremony will be held on Thursday at 6 p.m., with Crown Prince Maja Vajiranlongkorn as the guest of honor.

"Missing forms delay Philippine bets in Bangkok"

By Musong R. Castillo
Published on page A29 in the December 6, 2007 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

Nakhon Ratchasima-Several Filipino athletes, part of a big 151-athlete wave to arrive here for the 24th Southeast Asian Games, were held for more than three hours at the Bangkok International Airport Wednesday because of a mix-up with the local accreditation force.

Photos and application forms needed for the athletes' accreditation could not be found and the Reception and Protocol Committee of the Games scrambled to give them identification cards at the last minute.

At the Philippine International Convention Center in CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay, Metro Manila, some of local media journalists needed for accreditation.

That development delayed the Filipinos' arrival at the Olympic Village on the Suranaree University of Technology campus here. They checked into the village well into the night.

Members of the Philippine secretariat, led by Eleanor Navarro and Queenie Evangelista, facilitated the acquisition of new accreditation passes for the athletes, who touched down at the Bangkok airport together with Philippine Sports Commission chairman William "Butch" Ramirez.

Ramirez, who was whisked away by the VIP welcoming committee, was the second top sports official after Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco.

Cojuangco planed in with more than 140 athletes and officials on Tuesday. They arrived in Korat about 10 p.m. (11 p.m. Manila time).

Update:

"Kahit walang tulugan dito sa PICC, mga kasapi ng media mananatili dito sa Sofitel Philippine Plaza hanggang sa pagtatapos ng 24th Southeast Asian Games sa ika-15 ng Disyembre. Sinusubokan namin na ma-contact ng GMA News." - from Saksi, December 6, 2007 episode

Before the live airing of opening ceremony of the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, some of them who spotted at the central atrium fronting H&M, SM Mall of Asia are SM Supermalls president Annie Garcia, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. president Hans Sy, some executives from PLDT, Smart, Maynilad, Meralco, Facebook, Friendster, Multiply, Myspace, Twitter, Tumblr and YouTube in support of Filipino athletes during the 2007 SEA Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

What nationalism? (Here's the Score by Teodoro C. Benigno)

Suddenly, this word is being nudged into our consciousness and we’ve forgotten what it’s all about. What, honestly and truly, is nationalism?. Okay, the easy answer. It’s love of country. It’s a return to the values of yesteryear when the notion of nation drew us close together, particularly the war years. Fear and loathing of the Japanese invader and occupant. The tramp of his hobnailed boot, the terrors of Fort Santiago. Bataan and Corregidor. The Death March. Filipinos dying by the multitudes. The sword of Dai Nippon plunged ruthlessly into their entrails.

That is the only time I personally remember, outside of the Philippine revolution against Spain and the insurgency against the United States, that many Filipinos were ready and willing to die for this entity called Bayan kong Pilipinas. The Filipino nation. Pilipinas kong mahal. Hundreds of thousands did perish if not a couple of millions. Then and only then did love of country surge into the Filipino soul like molten lava. La patria was the revered fatherland. And a brace of Filipino heroes at the end of the 19th century gave their lives – willingly, courageously, indomitably.

Then the patriotic songs – Bayang Magiliw, Bayan Ko, Pilipinas Kong Mahal.

Lupang Hinirang

Bayang magiliw
Perlas ng Silanganan,
Alab ng puso,
Sa dibdib mo'y buhay.

Lupang hinirang,
Duyan ka nang magiting,
Sa manlulupig,
Di ka pasisiil.

Sa dagat at bundok,
Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,
May dilag ang tula at awit
Sa paglayang minamahal,
Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y
Tagumpay na nagniningning,
Ang bituin at araw niya
Kailanpama'y di magdidilim.

Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati't pag sinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;
Aming ligaya, na pag may mang-aapi
Ang mamatay nang dahil sa'yo.

Bayan Ko

Ang bayan kong Pilipinas
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklak
Pag-ibig ang sa kanyang palad
Nag-alay ng ganda't dilag.
At sa kanyang yumi at ganda
Dayuhan ay nahalina
Bayan ko, binihag ka
Nasadlak sa dusa.

Ibon mang may layang lumipad
Kulungin mo at umiiyak
Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag
Ang di magnasang makaalpas!
Pilipinas kong minumutya
Pugad ng luha ko’t dalita
Aking adhika,
Makita kang sakdal laya!

Pilipinas Kong Mahal

Ang bayan ko'y tanging ikaw
Pilipinas kong mahal
Ang puso ko at buhay man
Sa iyo'y ibibigay
Tungkulin ko'y gagampanan
Na laging kang paglingkuran
Ang laya mo'y babantayan
Pilipinas kong hirang

Ako ay Pilipino

Ako ay Pilipino
Ang dugo'y maharlika
Likas sa aking puso
Adhikaing kay ganda
Sa Pilipinas na aking bayan
Lantay na Perlas ng Silanganan
Wari'y natipon ang kayamanan
ng Maykapal
Bigay sa 'king talino
Sa mabuti lang laan
Sa aki'y katutubo
Ang maging mapagmahal
Ako ay Pilipino, ako ay Pilipino
Isang bansa, 'sang diwa
ang minimithi ko
Sa bayan ko't bandila
Laan buhay ko't diwa
Ako ay Pilipino
Pilipinong totoo
Ako ay Pilipino, ako ay Pilipino
Taas noo kahit kanino
Ang Pilipino ay ako.
Ako ay Pilipino, ako ay Pilipino
Taas noo kahit kanino
Ang Pilipino ay ako.

Isang bansa, isang diwa

Tayo’y mga Pilipino
Tubo sa silangan
Nagkaisa, nagkabuklod
Diwa’y tinaguyod
Bisig natin ay pag isahin
Sa lahat ng mithiin

Tayo’y mga Pilipino
Sa lupang pinagpala
Ating bansa, ating diwa
Langit ang adhika
Luzon, Visayas at Mindanao
Pilipinas ang tanglaw
(Ulitin ang simula)

Luzon, Visayas at Mindanao
Pilipinas ang tanglaw

Another symbol of our pride as Filipinos is the Panatang Makabayan. Do you still remember it? It was always recited during flag ceremonies when we were still in elementary and high school. In case you don't know,…

Panatang Makabayan

Original version

Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas
Ito ang aking lupang sinilangan
Ito ang tahanan ng aking lahi
Ako'y kanyang kinukupkop at tinutulungan
Upang maging malakas, maligaya at kapakipakinabang

Current version

Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas,
Aking lupang sinilangan,
Tahanan ng aking lahi;
Kinukupkop ako at tinutulungang
Maging malakas, masipag at marangal.

Dahil mahal ko ang Pilipinas,
Diringgin ko ang payo
ng aking magulang,
Susundin ko ang tuntunin ng paaralan,
Tutuparin ko ang tungkulin
Ng mamamayang makabayan:
Naglilingkod, nag-aaral at nagdarasal
Nang buong katapatan.
Iaalay ko ang aking buhay,
pangarap, pagsisikap
sa bansang Pilipinas.

"Ang Pasko ay Sumapit", yan kasi ang unang kinakanta namin pag nangangaroling kami noong childhood days ko

As far as I can remember, I joined my neighborhood friends when I was 7 and formed our own group of kid carolers. With our creative ingenuity, we equipped ourselves with makeshift instruments, including tambourines made of pipit na tension strung on a piece of wire and drums made from cans or biscuit tins, as we proudly sang the traditional song "Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit" out of our lungs even out of tune.

The "batang yagit" sporting short pants, T-shirts or sandos and rubber slippers hopping from one house to another every night, and the same houses all throughout the Yuletide Season until January 7; singing Jingle Bells, Silent Night, White Christmas, Pasko Na Sinta Ko, Joy to the World, Pasko Na Naman, Star ng Pasko and, Sa May Bahay". After rendering 3 or 4 songs, with the traditional chant of "Namamasko Po", we wait expectantly for the homeowners to reward us with coin, ranging from 0.50 centavos to 2.00 pesos. Afterward, we thank the generous homeowners by singing "Thank you, thank you, ang babait ninyo".

Some homeowners request non-Christmas songs. There was a drunk homeowner who asked us to sing "Lupang Hinirang," "Bahay Kubo," "My Way," "Maybe this Time," "Lead Me Lord," "Tanging Yaman," "May Bukas Pa," and "Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo." Despite the odds, we sang it with pride and were awarded 5.00 pesos—not bad.

Some stingy homeowners don't entertain carolers which we named "bahay patawad" and others refused to give us coins or drive us away from their house by simply uttering the traditional words "patawad", we return them a song "Thank you, thank you, ang babarat ninyo. Thank you" and start running away from their door.

After three hours of caroling, I still remember the delight I felt when my friends and I split our “earnings” each night.

I wonder if there are any Filipinos in the Philippines that has not experienced the Christmas caroling tradition? Iniisip ko kung ang mga batang mayayaman na kasing edad ko nuon from plush subdivisions ay nagkakaroling rin.

Ikaw, naranasan mo bang mag-karoling?

Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko and Christmas in our Hearts ❤️

"Ang Pasko ay Sumapit, Christmas in Our Hearts, Star ng Pasko, Thank You Ang Babait Ninyo yan po ang mga gusto ko pong awiting Pamasko"

"Star ng Pasko, Kumukutikutitap, Kampana ng Simbahan... all Christmas songs po..."

the Catholic hymns May Bukas Pa, Tanging Yaman, Sa 'yo Lamang. Kinakanta namin ito sa pagdiriwang ng banal na misa sa simbahan, kasi hindi na alam ng mga bata kantahin. Nakakahiya!

Today? The songs still rouse us, sometimes. The memories still rouse us, sometimes. The myth of nationalism and nationhood still rouse us, sometimes. But even when it was supposed to resurge like a great redeeming flood, and set out hearts pounding like triphammers – like EDSA I and EDSA II – it just wasn’t there anymore. When we toppled the dictator Ferdinand Marcos and the pretender Joseph Estrada, it was not because of nationalism. We swept these two dastards out of power because we hated their guts. We didn’t bring out the flags. We pealed no nationalistic bells. There was no notion of nation streaking to the heights like starshells.

We look at our leaders, our politicians. We don’t see nationalism writ on their faces. What we see is pork barrel. What we see is the pigoty. What we see is power hoisted to the pedestal of Bacchus, Mars and the tinkle-twinkle thunder of a Thor turned traitor.

And so we must explain what nationalism is about all over again. we must go back to its beginnings, pull out its roots, and tell our countrymen to gather at campfires all over the country. So we can recharge as Filipinos, recharge as a nation. The battles we will have to fight right ahead will need the torches of nationalism to light the way. We had rainbows at both EDSAS, but they had no nationalistic booster rockets. And so we lost our way again. With nationalism both as a guiding flare and ideological rocket, the fights ahead will be daunting. But God willing, we shall overcome.

So we start with the basics. Hang on. This will take some time.

It’s a strange, macabre twist of our history that the first deadly lance flung to defend – that is the perception – our archipelago from foreign invasion as that of Lapu-Lapu into the heart of the Spanish conquistador Ferdinand Magellan. At the time, the archipelago was not a nation. It was a sun-drenched splinter of thousands of islands. What they had in common was a tribal culture, hundreds if not thousands of independent fiefdoms engaged in all kinds of trade, primitive agriculture, fishery, handicraft, and widespread piracy.

Strange again, and macabre again. Magellan’s conquest of the Philippines, coupled with the advent of the Roman Catholic cross, eventually transformed, through colonization, this archipelago into a nation. The sword and the cross made sure the archipelago came into the imperial possession of Spain, named Las Islas Filipinas after King Philip.

A nation we may have been through imperial decree. But Filipinos we were not.

We became Filipinos only through colonial exploitation. We became Filipinos because we learned to protest, to resist and to fight, to band together in fear and in hate of the brutal conqueror. We became Filipinos because the few learned among us, Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Emilio Aguinaldo, the Luna brothers et al, gave flesh and bone to the word indio. We became Filipinos because we created La Liga Filipina, the Katipunan and waged the revolution against Spain. We became Filipinos because we fashioned our own national flag, splattered it with indio blood. We earned through our heroism the admiration of our colonized peers in Asia. We proclaimed the first republic in the continent. We showed everybody what patriotism was. What courage was.

Thus was a nation born. Thus was nationalism born.

But we have to go far back in history to get the kind of grip we Filipinos need on this modern phenomenon of nation and nationalism. Long before, after Anno Domini set in, there was the universal church in the West. The Roman Catholic Church had absolute dominion. Obeisance to the Pope and the Vatica was writ on every Western tablet. Then the dynasties came. There were the Normans, the Pantagenets, the Stuarts and the Tudors in England. There were the Romanov dynasty in Russia, the Hohenzollerns in Germany, the Bourbons in France, the House of Savoy in Italy.

As they spread through conquest and accumulation of riches and property, the dynasties started to weaken the hold of the universal Church. Out of these dynasties emerged the kingdoms, the monarchical states. As these states became more centralized, more powerful and extensive, the bedrock of the nation started to come into being. The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, after the 80 Years War and the 30 Years War, recognized the territorial sovereignty of the states.

Thus the nation-state was born. Thus began the meltdown of empires. Thus began, as the great Arab historian Ibn Khaldun said, "the mutual affection and willingness of a people to fight and die for each other."

Listen to this. Nationalism was generally expressed by the leaders, the intellectual elite, the writers, the professionals, the middle class, the studentry and the youth. Only much later on did the masses get into the picture with not too much emotion. It was in France and England where nationalism initially took deep and unshakeable root. This was the France which shook the world with its "liberte, egalite, fraternite" revolution of 1789. This was the England where Oliver Cromwell held kings by their pantaloons and drove the fear of God into their thrones.

The best definition of nation was articulated by Ernest Renan of the Sorbonne in 1882: "A nation is a soul, a spiritual principle, two things which are in reality...one. One is the common heritage of a people of a rich heritage of memories, the other is the actual agreemment, the desire to live together, the will to continue to make a reality of the heritage they have received in common."

Now take heed. It was only in the 20th century when the principles of nation and nationalism reached Asia. And upon reaching Asia, (whose colonial chains were then being broken) spread into so many explosions of nation-consciousness. This was certainly a reaction against the abuses and excesses of Western colonialism, as it was a reiteration of Asia’s earlier glory as the origin of the world’s great religions and great civilizations.

Unlike the Philippines, much of Asia could look back thousands of years and hoist the glitter of a myriad cultures, a myriad achievements in war and literature, philosophy and industry, architecture and the arts, science and technology. This also probably explains why many countries in Asia – again not the Philippines – took to nationalism like long-concealed thunderbolts of energy to make up for lost time. To survive, to make themselves again proud in and of their new nationhood, they had to study, learn and master the science and technology of the West.

That was the only way they could subjugate poverty. Restore dignity to their peoples. The journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step. That first step bolted like a screaming bullet out of the starting block. They have been sprinting like mad ever since. We Filipinos remain stuck in a stupor and lethargy we must annihilate.

We move or we die. We embrace the flag, and swift like a stampede across the vast plains of nationalism or we die.

We were born Filipinos. Now we must learn to be Filipinos. We must immerse ourselves into a changed and dynamic culture. For culture is never permanently fixed, never frozen. Like the Japanese, like the Koreans, like the Malaysians, we must care, we must hustle, we must be proud. we must learn. We must work hard. Science and technology were never the monopoly of anybody, any nation, any civilization. We have to grab them.

The permanent care-givers of the world we are not. Neither are we the muchachos and the muchachas, the utos and the utusans. And certainly, we are not the yukis of Asia – Japayukis, or Chekwayukis or whatnot.

The Filipino can? Yes, the Filipino can. If he wakes up and embraces the noblest sentiment of them all – nationalism.

Multiply to return with the launch of archive photo and video services

Multiply.com, which closed down last May 6, 2013, and ceased all business operations on May 31, 2013, is ready to return.

Despite this, the Multiply Union announced that the management of MULTIPLY has agreed to an agreement on the request of the employees to secure their jobs when the said website reopens. MULTIPLY Union believes this will help the employees of the social shopping site who have lost their jobs.

This time, however, it will no longer be an social shopping and social networking site but an archive photo and video site with the new mobile application on smartphones, smart TVs, tablets, and digital media players.

It will focus on providing blogs, photos, and videos from the old Multiply accounts from 2004 to 2013, DailyBooth accounts from 2009 to 2012, Webshots accounts from 1999 to 2012, Friendster accounts from 2002 to 2011 and Fotolog accounts from 2002 to 2015.

The company’s return to the online business comes after an eight-year-long closure that started last May 31, 2013. The plan will allow the website to put aside financial difficulties, paving the way for its comeback.

It was scheduled to announce the launch of a mobile application that allows to download and view their old photos and videos from DailyBooth, Friendster, Multiply, Fotolog, and Webshots accounts on their computers, smartphones, and tablets.

All accounts on Multiply included the ability to add an unlimited number of photos. In addition to being able to share photos with contacts on Multiply, users could also let non-Multiply members see even their private photos by using the "share" link.

Multiply offered limited editing capabilities for photos: Photos could be rotated and a variety of picture frames can be added. Using the Multiply Media Locker users could crop photos, eliminate red eye, retouch photos, and adjust contrast, exposure, and saturation. There was also an Auto-Fix function that adjusted photos with one click. All of the adjustments were reversible until clicked to apply them.

Multiply has an Auto Uploading tool that automatically uploads your photos into your Media Locker where they are stored until you choose to share them. For premium users, the full-size original was stored.

Photos in 18 million Multiply accounts can be downloaded in Square 75, Square 150, Thumbnails, Small 240, Small 320, Small 400, Medium 500, Medium 640, Medium 800, Large 1024, Large 1600, Large 2048, X-Large 3K, X-Large 4K, X-Large 5K and Original.

Users could easily upload videos directly to Multiply, or they could pull videos in from YouTube, Photobucket, Google Video, Metacafe, or myspacetv.com.

Saying that Multiply will return with a totally new face, Prosus revealed that Multiply LLC is managed by a team, most of whose members are current Multiply CEO and owner Stefan Magdalinski and country manager for the Philippines Jack Madrid.

Most of its 500,000 employees had worked either for Multiply, the company said.

Of those who go to Multiply, 77 percent visit other social networking sites; in the case of Imeem 26 percent do so; while in Friendster only 1 percent do. For both Friendster and Imeem, 24 percent of users go to the profiles of its members. This kind of behavior is not as apparent among Multiply users. This highlights how different some social networking sites are used. Based on observations, more Filipino sellers are using Multiply than the other two sites.

In a July 1, 2022 interview, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. told local free-to-air radio and television stations, national and international broadsheets and local tabloids and news websites said the comeback of the Multiply as an archive photo and video site, plans to start constructing a new Multiply headquarters with a data center in Clark, Pampanga, and Jakarta, Indonesia as efforts to revive the former website as a social networking platform with Facebook and Instagram-styled features

The flat version of the 2003 logo officially became the main logo in 2023, in time for the website's 20th anniversary.

The president visited Jakarta, Indonesia last September 4 to 6, 2022, and Labuan Bajo, Indonesia last May 9 to 11, 2023, the renewal of ties when he stated the Multiply website will make a comeback, and start to hire old and new employees worldwide as well to recover and retrieve photos and videos and the talks were finally settled after years of shutdown.

However the American social media company would be called Multiply, Inc. under Magdalinski, and a new company as the successor to Multiply, Inc. to continue the Multiply website as an archived photo and video site with a new mobile application.

The formation of the unknown company would relaunch the Multiply website as an archive photo and video site registered in Boca Raton, Florida, U.S.A., and Jakarta, Indonesia.

For the past ten years, Multiply’s Facebook cover photo showed its parting message to its users.

“Thank you for making us a part of your life’s milestone. We’ll see you again when we begin a new chapter,” it reads.

Reports said that last July 2022, the management started its hiring process to prepare for the big comeback in the latter part of the year.

"Dahil nagbabanta na naman si Meta, nabuhay ang panawagang ibalik na si Multiply."

"Sana magkaroon na ng phone version si Multiply, Play store/App store(I-phone) baka naman"

Last May 31, 2024, the 11th anniversary of the Multiply shutdown, former CEO Stefan Magdalinski cited that the old Multiply to be relaunched soon, these plans are: to redesign the 2004 Multiply logo and to reformat from a blogging and social networking site to an archival photo and video site plus news articles from MTV News from 1996 to 2023, and DigiCo, the digital unit of the MVP Group will now own and manage the website.

At the same time, when business mogul Manuel V. Pangilinan assumed the chairmanship of the website, it updated a new redesigned logo.

Mr. Magdalinski was succeeded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who officially took over the role on June 1, 2024. Following this transition, Meta fintech executive Jeannie Lim was appointed country manager for the Philippines and Tang Siew Wai became the company's Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Under Schmidt's leadership, the company sought to reopen the Multiply website, to recover blogs, photos, and videos from 20 million users. The website will have Facebook and Instagram-styled Home Feeds, reels, and stories.

ABS-CBN's 2019 Christmas station ID, "Family is Forever," looks back on ABS-CBN's 65 years on Philippine television.

The 2019 ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID incorporates elements and lyrics from 65 years of Station IDs, not to mention Christmas features of ordinary people in 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

The almost 13-minute video opens with the written message: "Balikan natin ang ilang alaala sa 65 na taon nating pagsasama."

The Kapamilya station's 2019 Christmas ID also features old news footage capturing how the Filipino spirit has remained intact despite the onslaught of super typhoons Ondoy in 2009 and Yolanda in 2013.

The Voice Kids season four coaches Sarah Geronimo, Bamboo, and Lea Salonga, as well as the grand finalists, are next heard singing the "Family is Forever" song, which goes by the lyrics, "Pinag-isa tayo ng Diyos at pag-ibig, may iisang puso at iisang tinig. Forever, forever—family is forever."

PAST ABS-CBN CHRISTMAS STATION ID SONGS

The next part showed the opening clip of ABS-CBN’s Christmas station ID in 2009. Titled “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko,” this station ID showed parols being carried by a little boy walking along a muddy path, depicting the aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy.

The video then switched to a now grown-up Zaijian Jaranilla holding a parol. Zaijian was one of the main stars featured in the 2009 ABS-CBN Christmas station ID. Back then, he was the lead star of the Kapamilya network’s top-rating series, May Bukas Pa, which popularized the use of “Bro” as a way of addressing God.

Three kids were then shown singing the “Star ng Pasko” theme for their caroling.

The 2019 Christmas station ID also featured ordinary people singing the “Star ng Pasko” song, such as fishermen from Baseco, farmers from Nueva Ecija, doctors and nurses from Taguig, call center agents from Pasig, and some members of the Philippine navy.

Pinoys from Cebu and Davao, shoemakers from Marikina, priests and seminarians from Pasig were also shown singing the “Star ng Pasko” song, which was mixed with the “Forever, forever, family is forever” lyrics.

A woman from Tahanang Walang Hagdan and a family of three also sang lyrics from the 2015 ABS-CBN Christmas station ID “Thank You For The Love.”

Construction workers from Rizal, stewardess and passengers from an airplane ride, Filipinos from Hong Kong and Canada, and a teacher from Tiaong Elementary School in Guiguinto, Bulacan were seen singing the 2017 ABS-CBN Christmas station ID theme song, “Just Love.”

Passengers riding an ordinary bus led the singing of the 2018 ABS-CBN Christmas station ID theme, “Family is Love.”

The station ID also showed the repairs being done after the Baclayon Church in Bohol was destroyed during the 2013 earthquake. Viewers also got a glimpse of the M/V Eva Jocelyn ship that became the typhoon Yolanda tourism symbol.

Villagers from Bohol and Tacloban, soldiers from Zambaonga, Ondoy Survivors from Marikina also sang the “Family is Love” theme.

Wearing a “Tulong Na, Tabang Na” shirt, the girl is now all grown-up. “Tulong Na, Tabang Na” shirts were sold by ABS-CBN to raise funds for the victims of super typhoon Yolanda.
