JEHOVAH TSIDKENU: God, The Righteous One
"The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness." Jeremiah 23:5-6
As the darkness that shrouded Russia under Communism began to lift, thousands of people began to search for their spiritual roots. The following letter was sent to a fellow Christian broadcaster: "I do not know how to address you, that is, I do not know your name; but I do not think that is important. The fact is that I want to know definitely whether there is a God or are you just deceiving the people. If you are as certain about God's existence as you preach and sing about Him, then I straightway would want to believe in Him the same way as you do." The listener then begged for a Bible so he could read the record for himself.
As I pondered the circumstances of the one who wrote, living under the dark cloud of atheism, uncertain as to whether or not there is a God, I thought of the words of the one-time cynic turned believer, Malcolm Muggeridge, who said, "God has mercifully made the diversions whereby we seek to evade the reality of existence so ludicrous, so preposterous in their outcome, that we are forced back to Him to cry out of help and mercy." (National Courier, June 24, 1977, p. 23).
Living without God under Communism for 73 years seemed to bring out the very darkness of the human soul and make people cry out, "God, wherever you are, whoever you are, we want to know you!"
If, however, you sat down and tried to tell the person who wrote that letter who God is and what He is like, what would you say? Yes, you could tell him that God is powerful, loving, kind, and merciful, but those words describe the acts of God more than His nature or character.
There is one characteristic of God which has always been difficult for us to understand, and that is the righteousness of God. Agree? In the pages of the Old Testament there are seven redemptive names for God, each showing us something of His relationship with us as His children. Each of these is a compound of a word with the Hebrew word Jehovah, and one of the most important is the expression Jeremiah used for God, calling Him Jehovah Tsidkenu or The Lord our Righteousness. "Ah, yes!" you say, but quickly ask, "What is righteousness?"
Sometimes we better understand something by acknowledging its opposite. And what is the opposite of righteousness? In a word, depravity! And then in our world of baseness and wrongdoing, we understand that God, being righteous, is the very opposite of what we describe as sin in the world.
One of our greatest misconceptions is that we can generate this in our own lives. "Impossible," cries Paul, as he writes, "There is no one righteous, not even one" (Romans 3:10). Again he said that forgiveness with God for our depravity and wrongdoing is "not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us," says Paul, "through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5).
Malcolm Muggeridge believed that our darkness drives us to the light, and our depravity and baseness make us cry out for mercy and help; and when we do that, a kind and loving God--totally different from what we are--gives us eternal life, accepting the payment made by His Son, who died for our depravity.
In the natural, none of this makes sense. We, of course, treat anyone who acts generously towards us with suspicion, thinking, "What's the catch?" Understanding there is no catch makes the heart cry out in praise and worship. As Jeremiah wrote, He is indeed "The Lord our righteousness," no matter how difficult it may be to understand from a human perspective.

JEHOVAH SHAMMAH: God, Who Is Present
The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits. And the name of the city from that time on will be: THE LORD IS THERE. Ezekiel 48:35
Only those who have been through very difficult hard times can understand the reality of knowing that God had his hand on their lives, that He is the one who sustained and preserved them. That realization, of course, is humbling because when you have been through the fire and you made it, you know it wasn't your cleverness or your strength that brought you through. It had to be God.
Frank Worsley would have agreed. This tough, optimistic New Zealander was captain of the ship, HMS Endurance when in 1914 Sir Earnest Shackleton took 27 brave men and headed for the South Pole. Everything was put on hold, however, when the merciless ice pack crushed the Endurance. A long, difficult journey brought the group to Elephant Island, but then Shackleton realized they would die, if he did not go for help. Taking Worsley and one other man, Shackleton--against all odds--took a small whaling boat about 20 feet long and made it through eight hundred miles of hurricane-force storms with sub-freezing temperatures to South Georgia. But then having arrived, their problems were only beginning.
They had to cross the island to the little whaling settlement. Never before had a human done that. Twelve to fourteen thousand-foot peaks with crevasses filled with glaciers and snowpack had to be crossed. Three routes were selected and three times they led to dead ends. Wearily they climbed back to the top and chose another route.
Finally, they succeeded. In his book Endurance, named after their little ship, Worsley tells of the exciting adventure. Describing their trek across South Georgia island, he wrote, "Whenever I reviewed the incidents of that march, I had the sub-conscious feeling that there were four of us, instead of three. Moreover, this impression was shared by both Shackleton and Crean." And who was the fourth? Worsley never said. Was it an angel? Was it the presence of the Lord, guiding, sustaining, and protecting? The fact is, they made it; and Shackleton saved every man. (F.A. Worsley, Endurance, p. 164).
Scores of individuals can testify to the fact that in difficult times God made a difference one way or another. Of the beautiful names of God revealed in the pages of Scripture, there is one which confirms this beautiful truth. Ezekiel calls God, Jehovah Shammah, which means "The God who is present."
When a publisher asked me to write about my favorite verse, I had to ponder the issue for several months. "What is my favorite verse?" I asked myself, thinking that to select one from so many would be an impossibility. Finally, I decided. I said, there isn't one but two which both speak of a great truth. The references: Matthew 28:20 and Hebrews 13:5. The first phrase is, "Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world." The second records the words of Jesus Christ saying, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."
The stark reality is that God never promised to protect us from the ice packs that would crush our little vessels, the storms of life that come with hurricane force, the bitter driving winds that threaten us. But God promised to be with us in the storm, to walk with us through the fire, and to be present as we go through the dark valley.
"But why don't I feel this?" A friend put the very question to me this past week. The unsatisfying but truthful answer is that there are some things which you accept and believe as truth no matter whether or not you feel them.
Jehovah Shammah, God who is present with us, can make all the difference. As Frank Worsley put it, "there was no doubt that Providence had been with us." Indeed, it was (in his words), "a thing that has given me much food for thought, and which I have never been able to explain." It's still true.

JEHOVAH RA-AH: God, My Shepherd
May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21
"What I believe about God," said A. W. Tozer, "is the most important thing about me." He was right, but the problem is that most of us aren't really sure what we believe about Him. Most of our knowledge and images of God are second-hand leftovers from our parents, or bad experiences that we conclude are reflections of God.
When God revealed Himself to Moses, He told him that He was Jehovah God--the sum total of existence. The word that was used, Jehovah, was also used in compounds such as "Jehovah our peace," or "Jehovah our righteousness." There are a number of these, each of which gives us new insights as to who God is and what is His relationship with us.
But none of these is more personal and comforting than the one used by David in Psalm 23 where the one who fought Goliath called God Jehovah Ra-ah, or "God my Shepherd." Remember how David began, saying, "The Lord is my shepherd…"
Before him Jacob blessed his grandsons, saying, "God who has been my Shepherd all my life to this day… may He bless these boys" (Genesis 48:15). If God is the shepherd, then obviously we are the sheep – who are among the dumbest and most dependent of all creatures that God ever made.
Some animals can outrun their enemies. They are fleet of foot. But not sheep. Others have great strength. They can defeat their enemies. But not sheep. Still others can hide from their enemies. Their markings blend in camouflage. But not sheep. Sheep are completely dependent on the shepherd for protection, for guidance, for help when they fall, and for strength when they are weak.
Is it any wonder that Jesus looked upon the multitude who had come to hear him speak, and seeing their needs was moved with compassion, describing them as "harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd" (Matthew 9:36)?
"I am the Good Shepherd," he said, adding that the Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep" (see John 10:11). One of the big differences between the Old and New Testaments is that in the Old the lamb gave his life for the shepherd, but in the New the Shepherd gave His life for the sheep.
Bringing this home, making it quite personal, may I ask, "How would you describe your relationship with God?" That of someone wanting to escape from a policeman, thinking that God carries a big stick and is out to get you? Or rather would you think of yourself as one fruitlessly searching for Him—where- ever He is out there somewhere, wondering if your search will ever be completely successful? Or have you established the kind of relationship with God that David had as he said, "The Lord is my shepherd," making it personal?
Long ago the prophet Isaiah described us as sheep who had gone astray. He said that "each of us has turned to his own way," and in those simple words, we have the dilemma that confronts us. Having turned from the care of the Shepherd, we have strayed far, far from the kingdom of peace. Jesus said, "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost" (Luke 19:10).
The good news, however, is that the Shepherd never gives up seeking and finding those who have strayed. A generation ago we used to sing a certain song when pastors invited people to find Christ. The words went, "Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me; See, on the portals He's waiting and watching, Watching for you and for me. Come home, come home. Ye who are weary, come home. Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling; calling, O sinner, come home." It's still true. Thank God, He is still the Shepherd who welcomes home the lost.

Some details of the closing song of CCTV
As we all know, the ending song of ABS-CBN is called "Feeling Quiet". It has been used since June 1, 1998 when it was replaced with the 2014 logo, and extended a new version of the ending song, but it was originally used for ABS-CBN and Studio 23 of the ending song have been changed to broadcast for 24 hours and inserted directly into the "Goodbye", which is embarrassing.
However, regarding the closing song, there are several details that need to be discussed with you ups.
1. Is there an ending song in the era of ABS-CBN Star/Sarimanok (and before)?
Before 2009, the end of ABS-CBN's all-day program was "see picture again". It might look like this:

JEHOVAH SHALOM: God Our Peace
For Christ himself is our way of peace. He has made peace between us Jews and you Gentiles by making us all one family, breaking down the wall of contempt that used to separate us. Ephesians 2:14, Living Bible
In 1904 a massive, bronze statue of Christ with his arms outstretched to the harbor of Buenos Aires was erected. Known as the "Christ the Redeemer of the Andes," standing at an altitude of 13,000 feet, it towers over the whole area. Christ's left hand holds a cross. His right hand is extended in blessing. On the base of the great statue is a quotation from Paul's letter to the Ephesians which reads, "He is our peace who has made both one."
Have you ever wondered what's the story behind this magnificent work of art? In 1899 Argentina and Chile were on the path leading to war. Though there had never been an armed confrontation between these two countries, it was certain that one was brewing. Armies had been massed on the border between the two countries. By Easter of 1900, it was only a matter of days or hours until the first shots were fired.
That's when Monsignor Bonaventura in Buenos Aires preached a passionate Easter message calling for peace. On the other side of the border the echo was picked up and others called for peace as well. Gradually pleas for sanity won out and King Edward VII of Britain was asked to arbitrate the dispute. Eventually the treaty was signed, and the canons that had been pointed at each other were melted down, and the bronze was poured into the mold for the "Christ of the Andes."
Forgive me for thinking this, but I can't help suggesting that the only possible solution to the strife between Israel and her Arab neighbors is for the Prince of Peace, the one of whom Isaiah spoke of long ago, to reach out His hand to each and bring a treaty of peace.
The same thing is true of troubled marriages and conflicts between people. In four decades of working with people, I have discovered that if two people will come together and ask God to arbitrate their conflict in prayer, He does what could never happen otherwise.
One of the beautiful expressions of God's desire for peace is found in the words of one of Israel's judges. His name was Gideon. He feared that he would be killed at the hands of His enemies, but God sent an angel with the good news, "You are not going to die." There Gideon built an altar and called it Jehovah Shalom, which means "God is our peace." Five times in the New Testament alone, this mighty God is called "The God of all peace."
"Peace," wrote A.B. Simpson, "is the most precious of all the gifts and graces of the Spirit; so precious indeed is peace that it was the one legacy left us by our departing Lord. Joy," he said, "may be more exciting, but peace is more sustaining." How true. No wonder Paul described God's peace as "a peace which passes all understanding."
A closing thought: The only legacy which Jesus left to the rag-tag band of men He chose to walk with Him was that of peace. In the Upper Room, only hours before He was seized in the Garden, He said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).
And that, friend, is your inheritance as well, provided you make the God of all Peace your Lord, the one whom you ask to arbitrate your disputes and resolve your anger and pain.
"Grant to me above all things that can be desired," prayed Thomas á Kempis, "to rest in Thee, and in Thee to have my heart at peace." Yes, Lord, that's the prayer of my heart at well. Life's much too short to live with conflict and anger when God can bring peace.

Velasco takes his oath before Duterte
President Rodrigo Duterte administered the oath of office of Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco as the new House Speaker in a private ceremony held at the Rizal Hall in Malacañan Palace Monday night.
Velasco expressed gratitude to the President for all his help in making sure the speakership term-sharing agreement he brokered last year would be followed.
“I am deeply honored to be sworn in by President Duterte who I admire a lot and have high regard for. He is also one of the persons to whom I am greatly indebted,” Velasco said.
Velasco vowed to carry out the legislative agenda of the Duterte administration in Congress, noting that the lower chamber would prioritize measures that would put an end to systemic corruption and protect the interests and welfare of overseas Filipino workers, farmers and fisherfolk.
“I assure the President that he can rely on Congress to help him fulfill his promises to our people before his term ends in 2022,” Velasco said.
As the 27th House Speaker, Velasco also committed to exert all efforts toward attaining his goal of a “stronger, inclusive and united House.”
“We will work together in Congress to pass laws that are timely and responsive to the needs of our countrymen and to make the lower chamber truly the House representing the people,” he said.
Last month, Velasco was elected as the House Speaker, replacing Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.
A total of 186 lawmakers voted to ratify Velasco’s election as the chamber’s top leader.

JEHOVAH RAPHA: God Our Healer
Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." Acts 3:6
You may have seen one of them yourself. A number of independent studies are showing a definite relationship between prayer and--are you ready for this? Physical healing. In some cases, individuals pray for themselves. In others elders in a local church lay hands on someone and the person is healed. But in some situations, reports a physician in San Francisco General Hospital, the individuals themselves who recovered didn't even know anyone was praying.
Surprised? You should not be if you believe the record of Scripture. Neither would Moses have been surprised, either. Take time to read Exodus 15 from your Old Testament. There you will read the story of Moses' encounter with the bitter waters of Marah. Here's the background.
After crossing the Red Sea, the people were without fresh water for three days--a pretty long time to be thirsty – and then they came to a spring. "Wonderful!" the people thought, but their elation soon turned to sorrow. They discovered the water wasn't fit to drink, so they gave the spring the name Marah, meaning "bitter" in Hebrew. Then Moses did what you would have done. He prayed, and God told him to cast a piece of wood into the water. "He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet" reads Exodus 15:25. Then God spoke. He said, "If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD who heals you" (Exodus 15:26).
Did you notice that phrase, "I am the Lord who heals you!" It says literally, I am Jehovah Rapha, meaning "God, the one who heals you!" But that was a long time ago, cries the skeptic, suggesting that God no longer does things such as this.
Jesus, of course, did not believe that. He healed the sick, the broken hearted, the spiritual wrecks. He just spoke the word and it happened. "Yes," you say, "but He was God." The disciples also believed that God answers prayer and heals the sick. Peter and John confronted a cripple at the Gate Beautiful in the temple area. Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk" (Acts 3:6).
Simple, often very poor believers in China also believe that Jehovah Rapha or "The God who heals" is still in business. Time doesn't allow my telling of first-hand reports how in response to simple, fervent prayers, cancers have dried up and dropped off the shining faces of joyful Christians, or God gave deliverance from enemies destined to put them in prison.
"OK, then," why don't we see more of this today?" The following story may answer that question. A small boat was cast adrift near the mouth of the giant Amazon River, and their supply of fresh water became exhausted. Seeing a ship nearby they posted a distress signal, and the ship drew nearby to determine what was the problem. Hearing their desperate plea for water, the captain responded, "Just put your bucket over the side and you have your answer!" The thirsty, deprived sailors didn't know that fresh water--not saltwater--flowed in the banks of one of the greatest rivers in the world.
Today's commentary is a reminder that God is still Jehovah Rapha, and whether you are in a hospital, an African hut, a Russian village, or the heart of a great city, God is still in the business of bringing healing and health to our lives and souls. Thank God some things never change.

Regular viewers or listeners of Pasada 630, the Teleradyo show Peter Musñgi and I anchor weekdays from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on DZMM, would have noticed that I’ve not been on the program since last week. That’s because I formally bade goodbye to Pasada on Friday, Oct. 30.
Peter and I were first partnered in 2013 on DZMM Teleradyo’s Teka Muna every Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. But I, of course, knew Peter way back in the ‘90s, when he was the head of DZMM and the unmistakable golden voice of ABS-CBN. I remember how surprised I was when Marah Capuyan, now head of DZMM, offered me Teka Muna. I had no experience in radio, but I took it as a challenge despite some reservations about working Saturday nights.
Peter told me to give it a few months. He convinced me to take on the challenge and said that though radio work doesn’t pay as much as television, the discipline and the experience the medium offers are invaluable. I even remember that our buena mano studio guest on our first airing on June 1, 2013 was then MMDA chairman and now Sen. Francis Tolentino.
And then, in September 2018, I got a call from News and Current Affairs head Ging Reyes, who asked if I was interested in doing a daily show. I remember replying, “As long as it’s not 5 a.m.,” and thinking how nice it would be to get my weekends back. And so, on Oct. 25, Peter and I became the new anchors of Pasada 630 weekdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., replacing the tandem of Vic de Leon Lima and Karen Davila.
Fast forward to 2020, when the Philippines and the rest of the world fell victim to COVID-19. On March 15, President Duterte declared the nationwide ECQ. On May 5, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued a Cease and Desist Order (CDO) against ABS-CBN to stop broadcasting on its free-to-air channels. On July 10, the House Committee on legislative franchises overwhelmingly rejected ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal application.
(UPDATED) The Supreme Court en banc on Aug. 25 also voted to dismiss the plea of ABS-CBN Corp. to stop the closure order issued by the NTC on May 5.
On Sep. 10, the National Telecommunications Commission recalled the frequencies assigned to ABS-CBN, which it said was “warranted” in the absence of a legislative franchise.
ABS-CBN was now revamping its content strategy to compete with other stations.
“The entertainment, lifestyle and news and current affairs will stay, substantially as it is. The sports content will still be there and we’re expanding the sports content. Then there will be some entertainment shows that we will be putting in,” the network said.
“It’s not a shutdown situation for ABS-CBN. I think it’s a selective kind of programming. I think it’s the only way for ABS-CBN to compete. The viewing habits for video are slowly changing, so we want to move in the direction rather than stay with the legacy where we are not competitive,” the network said.
According to David Michael Lopez: "Hopefully, ABS-CBN will apply for a brand new franchise in 2022 once Duterte steps out as President of the Republic of the Philippines on June 30, 2022 at 12:00 noon Philippine Time. Let me end the day with the very sad news. The Philippine government has ordered a recall of all the ABS-CBN's Frequencies on all radio and television stations throughout the Philippines."

Following that fateful day, the lives of thousands of ABS-CBN employees including myself changed overnight. And though I was among the thousands who were retrenched, I was lucky to still have work as a Teleradyo talent. But much as I wanted to stay on as a Kapamilya, I had to seek employment elsewhere. Like I said, radio work doesn’t pay much, certainly not enough to sustain the needs of a single mom who has two kids.
Fortunately, former Negros Occidental three-term congressman Albee Benitez, whom the press has labeled as an emerging entertainment mogul, saw the void that ABS-CBN’s closure created and seized the opportunity to take in some of its displaced talents and employees, myself included. He signed up with TV5 to be a blocktimer under his Brightlight Productions company, securing 18 hours per week.
Occupying these time slots are six new shows, including Lunch Out Loud (Mondays to Saturdays, 12 noon to 2 p.m.) with Billy Crawford, Alex Gonzaga, Bayani Agbayani, Kaye Brosas, Wacky Kiray, KC Montero, Jeff Tam and Ariel Rivera. Also in the line-up are Rated Korina with Korina Sanchez-Roxas (Saturdays, 4 to 5 p.m.); Oh My Dad (Saturdays, 5 to 6 p.m.) directed by Jeff Jeturian and starring Ian Veneracion, Dimples Romana, Sue Ramirez, Ariel Ureta and Gloria Diaz; I Got You directed by Dan Villegas and starring Beauty Gonzalez, RK Bagatsing and Jane Oineza; Sunday Kada (Sundays, 3 to 4 p.m.) directed by Bobot Mortiz with Daniel Matsunaga, Ritz Azul, Miles Ocampo, Sunshine Garcia and many more; and Sunday Noontime Live (Sundays, 12 noon to 2 p.m.) directed by Johnny Manahan with Piolo Pascual, Catriona Gray, Donny Pangilinan, Jake Ejercito and Maja Salvador.
I joined Brightlight Productions on Sept. 1, and it’s been quite fun and challenging. And though lots of work lies ahead, everyone’s just grateful to be working in these trying times and gung ho to help the new shows succeed. Brighter days are indeed on the horizon.
