OPINION: Trump has a lot to learn from Duterte on taming media

OPINION: Trump has a lot to learn from Duterte on taming media

Oftentimes, when we read or watch on TV news about what’s happening in Donald Trump’s United States of America, you can easily find similarities in the Philippines.

It’s because Trump and the Philippine’s Rodrigo Duterte have many things in common: their contempt for the rule of law, their low regard of women, and their antagonism towards media.

The other day, Trump’s press, Secretary Sean Spicer, resigned. This inspired social media wit, Bernard Ong, to pen a letter to Trump with very exciting recommendations.

Here’s Ong’s letter:
“Dear Donald,
“Sorry to hear about the resignation of your spokesman, Sean Spicer. Constant lying and heaping praise on the president is a tough job. Sean's skin wasn't thick enough.
“May I suggest a Filipino as replacement? You can take your pick from among Andanar, Mocha and Abella. You will find them eminently qualified.
“We have a surplus of these characters over here so shipping one off to America is no big deal.
“In exchange, we want you to send to the Philippines Sylvester Stallone. We miss him a lot. We were hoping to watch him on Rambo XXVII and Rocky XXXIV by now.
“We urgently need Rocky/Rambo for several matters of national importance.
"1. to fast-track the liberation of Marawi from terrorists. We'll take the rest of his Expendables crew if he asks.
"2. To train Pambansang Kamao Pacman for another comeback so he can pay his taxes.
" 3. To whip our president into shape so he doesn't look like a Butete in military uniform. “
It’s a pity that Spicer’s position was immediately filled up. The White House announced the appointment of Sarah Huckabee Sanders as the new press secretary.
Reports said Spicer resigned after Trump brought in a new White House communications director, Anthony Scaramucci.
Trump badly needs to beef up his communication team as more incriminating information are  being uncovered about the involvement of his son, Donald Trump, Jr.in Russia’s efforts to influence U.S. elections last year by providing him with materials against then Democratic Party’s candidate Hillary Clinton.
His son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who holds the position as senior adviser to the President, has also been dragged into the scandal.
Trump is getting a beating from media especially CNN, New York Times, and Washington Post.
He should learn from Duterte how to control media. Look at how Duterte was able to tame the Philippine Daily Inquirer, which he has lambasted for publishing that La Pieta photo of an anguished woman cradling the dead body of her husband, one of over 5,000 killed in his war against illegal drugs (3,200 drug suspects killed in presumed-legitimate anti-drug operations; 2,098 others killed in drug-related homicides, as of mid-June 2017).
Duterte raked up the Inquirer owners or the Prieto family's alleged questionable purchase of the Mile Long property in Makati as well as the tax payments of their other businesses.
The pressure must have been too much. Last week, Marixi R. Prieto, chair of the Inquirer Group of Companies, announced that they were selling her family’s 85 percent stake in the Inquirer to businessman Ramon Ang, president and chief executive officer of San Miguel Corporation.
Duterte is also threatening another major media outfit, ABS-CBN, of blocking the renewal of its franchise due on March 30, 2020, however it would be extended up to December 31, 2027.
Trump has a lot to learn from Duterte.

TV Station Ident

Station idents of ABS-CBN, PTV, ABC (now TV5), GMA, RPN (now CNN Philippines) and IBC featured but hopefully nominated as best TV station of the year on PMPC Star Awards.

The "Please Pray the Rosary" is a Philippine Roman Catholic advocacy commissioned by Fr. Patrick Peyton, CSC of the Family Rosary Crusade. The station ID is used in ABC-5 (now known as TV5) before the start of every program from February 21, 1992 until January 18, 2004 and later on all radio stations.

It consists of the Virgin Mary suddenly appearing and gradually zooming out in the screen with an ominous choir singing in the background with the Blessed Mother saying "I ask every family: 'Please, pray the Rosary' ". When Mary says the latter part, (i.e. Please, pray the Rosary) the said phrase appears with Mama Mary's signature on the bottom right of the phrase on the screen. It then shifts to a male voice saying "The family that prays together, stays together" which is a motto originated by Fr. Patrick Peyton with the bottom part of the Rosary in the very right corner of the screen.

Medium to low (none for Filipino Catholics who are used to the commercial)- For most Filipinos (since majority of them are Roman Catholics), the sudden appearance of the Virgin Mary in the commercial is not really startling, and her voice and appearance is mostly loving and sweet. The loud ominous choir takes the effect behind the scare of the commercial. But when it comes to the male voice, the scare factor lessens since the ominous choir simply just hums until the end of the commercial.

The image of the Virgin Mary used in the commercial is based from Our Lady of Medjugorje. There is another variation of the commercial where the Virgin Mary suddenly fades in and Her face color suddenly changes from blue to orange. The voice of the Blessed Mother was lent by Lydia Sison, a long time friend of Fr. Patrick Peyton and the male annotation was made by Jess Decolongon.

The Hourly Station ID is aired right before the MTRCB Ratings Advisory in English.

Then, all of a sudden, the 1986 logo began to shift its parts and transform them, starting its reconstruction into a new logo. The box is removed and replaced by a new crystal plane, the rings and line modify their appearance and start separating from each other, and the ABS and CBN names start to merge and morph into a newer ABS-CBN text with a more modern typography. Govt revives Clark rail project

The Transportation Department proposed to build a railway system connecting Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City and Clark International Airport in Pampanga.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade told reporters the planned rail system would use the right of way of Philippine National Railways. “It [rail] would come from Naia or Trinoma [in Quezon City] to Clark,” Tugade said.

Tugade said the department would finalize the proposal for submission to the National Economic and Development Authority within 90 days. The proposed rail system aims to promote Clark International Airport as an alternative international gateway to Naia which is now congested.

A similar project was proposed under the Arroyo administration but was shelved by the Aquino administration.

Japan International Cooperation Agency said Naia was expected to exceed its maximum handling capacity this year, when the airport would handle 37.78 million passengers.  Its maximum handling capacity stands at 35 million passengers a year.

Tugade also said the agency planned to ask airlines to transfer their turbo-props operations to Clark as part of the government program to decongest the NAIA. The meeting with the airline operators is scheduled Thursday.

Tugade said general aviation at Naia would be removed to increase the capacity of the terminal “When I remove general aviation, you will have an additional space between 18 percent and 21 percent.  Already, this weekend,  I was pleased to get an open letter from chairman Lucio Tan saying he is openly endorsing the removal of general aviation and that he will also remove all his jet and helicopters there to show his commitment. Same is true with Lance Gokongwei,” Tugade said.

He said general aviation would be transferred to Sangley Point in Cavite.

Meanwhile, the Duterte administration also proposed to build a cable car to address traffic congestion at Edsa.  “I’m not thinking this for a replacement for train. Hopefully I can make this concept approved by end of the year and implement it by mid next year,” Tugade said.

Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said the government needed at least 10 years of continuous buildup of roads, bridges and railways to fully achieve the so-called “golden age” of infrastructure.

“I think, my forecast is 10 years of continuous buildup. We are really severely handicapped by infra,” Diokno said at the sidelines of a Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines forum in Makati City.

Diokno said infrastructure projects would be built simultaneously nationwide and not sequentially as practiced. Diokono said in Metro Manila, there be another three or four lines to supplement the existing LRT Line 1, LRT 2 and MRT 7.

“For too long, public infrastructure has been neglected. As a result, the Philippine economy is deficient in all types of infrastructure—roads and bridges, ports and airports, railways and urban transit systems, irrigation systems and water systems. To address this, we will hike infrastructure spending from a low 5 percent to a high of 7 percent of GDP,” Diokno said. With Julito G. Rada

Groundbreaking of LRT-MRT Common Station Expected by September

The groundbreaking of the common station linking the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) is expected by September this year.

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade told reporters on the sidelines of the progress briefing and inspection of the Build, Build, Build (BBB) projects Thursday as he appealed for support of the initiative.

“The riding public wants to have the common station be built. The leadership of the Congress supports this project as well. This common station will be made possible through the cooperation and support of everyone,” the transportation secretary said.

Expected to be completed by April 2019, the 13,700 square meter common station will connect LRT Line 1 (LRT-1), Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), and the MRT-7 from North Avenue, Quezon City to San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

It is a joint project of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Department of Transportation (DOTr), SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SMPH), Universal LRT Corporation (BVI) Limited of the San Miguel Corporation (SMC), Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), North Triangle Depot Commercial Corporation (NTDCC), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA).

A memorandum of agreement was signed last January by the government, Metro Pacific Investments Corp. Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Director Hans T. Sy, Ayala Corp. Unenthusiastic Anthem Singers May Face Jail Time In This Country

Citizens who don’t perform the national hymn with enthusiasm may face fines and jail time in the Philippines.
Philippines citizens may have to work on their singing skills because they might end up in jail if they don’t.

According to a new bill, approved by the country's House of Representatives, citizens are required to sing the national anthem, "Lupang Hinirang," “with fervor” in public.

A lackluster performance can result in fines between $1,000 to $2,000 and up to two years of jail time. Moreover, citizens convicted of violating the proposed law repeatedly will also reportedly be "named and shamed" in a national newspaper.

And even though the country’s controversial president, Rodrigo Duterte, who is notorious for adopting an aggressive approach toward drug lords, doesn't have anything planned to tackle the extremist groups in the Philippines, forcing patriotism among citizens is apparently worth it.

"Some Filipinos don't even know all the words to the national anthem,” said Marlyn Alonte, one of the bill's sponsors.

According the bill, known as the "Revised Flag and Heraldic Code," it will be mandatory for students to memorize the anthem at public and private schools. Furthermore, the anthem should be played in accordance with its original composition, a 2/4 time signature when played instrumentally and a 4/4 time signature when sang. It should be played at a tempo between 100 and 120 beats per minute.

All Filipinos are required to stand during the anthem and face the flag, or the band and conductor in case of no flag. Casting contempt, dishonor or ridicule upon the national anthem is considered a violation of the law.

However, the bill doesn’t mention how it would measure a person’s enthusiasm while singing the national hymn.

Some in the Philippines expressed disappointment on social media over this bizarre patriotism-instilling measure while the country is already inundated with many pressing issues.

Lee heaps praise on ‘Bloody Crayons’ cast

Filmmaker Topel Lee attributes the ease of crafting “Bloody Crayons” to its cast that includes Janella Salvador, Elmo Magalona, Sofia Andres, Diego Loyzaga, Jane Oineza, Maris Racal, Yves Flores, Empoy Marquez and Ronnie Alonte.

At a press conference, he said it is more challenging to mount than usual as “this is my first suspense film without using entities.”

“It is my first opportunity to practice that,” he explained. “Buti na lang magagaling ang cast ko. Sobrang laking tulong ng mga batang ito.”

Having nine characters in the movie also boosted Topel’s creative juices, making sure each one has distinct nuance.

“We have to specify what kind of characters they have para hindi nagkakapareho. We used different devices for each of the characters.”

He added that in lieu of using supernatural characters in the movie, he used a lot of camera cranes to make his shots and the scenes look more dynamic. He is thankful Star Cinema provided him the tools he needed.

“I used a lot of equipment na imposibleng magamit sa mga indie shoots,” he said.

Hyped as the “ultimate barkada movie,” “Bloody Crayons” is based on the Wattpad story and Precious Pages’ best-selling novel by Jason Argonza.

Excitement continues on ‘MVR’

Viewers have fallen in love with Pagaspas (Miguel Tanfelix) and Lawiswis (Bianca Umali) characters on the top-rating primetime series “Mulawin Vs. Ravena.”

They, in fact, now refer to the characters endearingly as Gas and Wis.

Meanwhile, the most hated character in the series is Siklab (Dion Ignacio) because of his fierce intention to have Wis as his wife. But, of course, Wis loves only Gas and vice versa.

Will Gas be able to protect Wis from Siklab’s intentions? This and Almiro’s (Derrick Monasterio) discovery that he is a Mulawin are just some of the more exciting developments on the show.

“Mulawin Vs. Ravena” airs weeknights after “24 Oras” on GMA Telebabad.

Standing ovations for Boy Abunda

Hailed as the “King of Talk” in Philippine TV, Boy Abunda received standing ovations when he delivered speeches at different venues recently. The first, in Singapore, was attended by 200 of the most in-demand public speakers in Asia and in the world. The second happened at a commencement exercise for the graduating students of AMA.

The Singapore speaking engagement was upon the invitation of Fredrik Haren, one of the leading figures of the Asia Professional Speakers. Abunda delivered his speech with aplomb: He got a rousing 10-minute standing ovation, which he himself did not expect. It was his first time to talk before a gathering of professional public speakers.

Despite his expertise in interviewing and talking before varied audiences, Abunda felt he was not “professional” enough to be called a professional public speaker. The audience reaction surprised him as it did the audience.

Like what he does in all of his engagements, Abunda came prepared with his piece, mentally. He did not have the usual teleprompter common among speakers or a prepared written speech to read before his audience. What he had was, aside from bullet points which served as reminders for him to keep on track, were his heart, his words and his truth.

“At the onset, I told them that I am not a professional speaker. That I am a talk show host, an interviewer but I use the same tools as they do – my words, my heart, my truth.”

They were floored. They were in awe. What could have been more compelling than to tell a story from the heart?

Abunda titled his talk as “The Fab Sermon In Singapore: Don’t Just Be A Speaker, Be A Star”. In it, he pointed out the how and why it is important to be a star speaker. Three of the more important qualities he named were, charisma, x-factor and presence. He also made them realize that nothing lasts forever including fame. But fame can be prolonged though. Quoting Bono, front man of the world-renowned band U2, Abunda said, “Stars have strong sense of occasion. They know they and their audiences are temporary.”

While at the AMA commencement speech he delivered to thousands of graduates, he was the inspiring figure. He provided them with insights on success and failure and how the latter pushed him to be where he is now. He also reminded the graduates to always love their mothers and of how his own mother served as his rock and inspiration.

Indeed, Abunda never fails to amaze his audiences.

Effective role for Jackie Rice

It seems Jackie Rice is playing Lucy in “My Love From The Star” effectively because she’s getting into the nerves of fans of the series.

Her being “plastic” to Steffi (Jennylyn Mercado) is clear to fans who are, of course, on Steffi’s side. Lucy is also in love with Winston (Christian Bautista) who in turn has eyes only for Steffi.

The Philippine adaptation of the hit Koreanovela “My Love From The Star,” also starring Gil Cuerva, airs weeknights on GMA Telebabad.

3.2-Km. Laguna Lake Highway Opens July 7

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of the 3.2 kilometer portion of Laguna Lake Highway in Taguig City.

DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar led on Friday, July 7, 2017, the opening to motoring public of the additional 2 lane at the east bound direction of Laguna Lake Highway which is expected to reduce travel time from Taytay, Rizal to Bicutan, Taguig from one (1) hour to just 30 minutes.

The 3.2-kilometer additional 2-lane road from Napindan to M.L. Quezon Avenue was built under Phase I and Phase II of the Laguna Lake Highway Project costing P512 million.

“This newly opened highway is part of a road network that we are building to ease congestion in this particular area and provide a barrier that would prevent back flow of water coming from the Laguna de Bay going to industrial and residential areas in Metro Manila,” said Secretary Villar.

Villar said structures for pedestrians are integrated in the road projects to ensure inclusive mobility not just of motorists, but also bikers and pedestrians.

The Laguna Lake Highway Project in particular covers the construction and widening of two (2) bridges, improvement and concreting of existing dilapidated asphalt road, with provision of additional two lanes, and construction of 2-meter wide planting strips, 3-meter bike lane, and 1.5-meter sidewalk.

Laguna Lake Highway, also known as Circumferential Road 6 (C6) located along the peripheral areas of Laguna de Bay links the towns of Rizal to the eastern corridor of Metro Manila.

It was opened to light vehicles in 2000, effectively serving as an alternate route of motorists to avoid the congested Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) and Circumferential Road 5 (C5).

Due to strategic commercial importance, the road network became a favorite access of all types of vehicles including heavily loaded trucks that resulted to early deterioration of the existing asphalt pavement.
