Rock musical ‘Katips’ opens today by Crispina Martinez - Belen July 15, 2016 Read more at http://www.mb.com.ph/rock-musical-katips-opens-today/#h1vwGWi9lLrLioHR.99

Lawyer and multi-awarded writer, director and producer Vince Tañada’s rock musical “Katips: Ang Mga Bagong Katipunero” opens today at SM Centerpoint in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
“A musical that charts a subversive tale of love – of one’s self, of another, of country – and sacrifice amidst the turbulence and massive desolation of an oppressed people under a Martial Law regime,” Vince says, it comes on the heels of Philippine Stagers Foundation’s musical “Pope-Pular,” which had 565 runs in 10 months.
“Katips” also depicts the language, fashion and culture in vogue back then. But more importantly, the play dramatizes the youth’s passion to effect change in society.
“Katips” aims to entertain and educate audiences using dance, drama and music – the universal language that binds us all. It is time to right the wrongs of the past and demand justice for all. We are the new Katipuneros and the Philippine Stagers Foundation challenges theater to go beyond walls by entertaining, education and inspiring people to act accordingly.”
Vince stressed: “This is not anti-Marcos, this is not pro-Aquino. I just want to tell the story of Martial Law, that there are victims of it, including my family. My grandfather Lorenzo Tañada was incarcerated. I interviewed members of a group of Martial Law victims called Claimants 1081. Inipon ko mga stories nila for this musical, but I use fictional characters.”

SM-Trinoma rail station a possibility

The common station that would link the Light Rail Transit Line (LRT)1 with Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Lines 3 and 7 would likely be located in between the Annex at SM City North EDSA and Trinoma malls.

John Eric Francia, president and chief executive officer of AC Infrastructure Holdings Corp. said the Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), San Miguel Corp., SM Prime Holdings, Inc., Ayala Land Inc. and the Department of Transportation are currently in discussions on the common station to link the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) with Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Lines 3 and 7.

LRT-1 runs from Roosevelt station in Quezon City up to Baclaran station in Pasay City, LRT-2 runs from Santolan station in Pasig City up to Recto station in Manila, while MRT-3 spans North Avenue station in Quezon City until Taft Avenue station in Pasay City.

The MRT-7, currently under construction, would cover North Avenue in Quezon City until San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan.

The common station is intended to link Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT-1), Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), and the future Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7).

The court was asked to force compliance to the 2009 agreement on the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) and state-run Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA).

The memorandum of agreement (MoA) involves a P200-million payment by SMPHI for the naming rights to the common station.

“The proposed common station in front of SM North EDSA was duly approved by the NEDA-ICC (National Economic and Development Authority - Investment Coordination Committee) as a priority infrastructure project in 2007,” the company said in the statement, noting that it was formally confirmed by the NEDA board and the cabinet on July 7, 2009.

Construction of the common station was supposed to be completed back in May 2010 but disputes over cost, engineering issues and naming rights caused a delay that continues to this day. Even if the physical infrastructure connecting the two rail systems are in place and successfully tested, commuters have to go down at the Roosevelt station of LRT-1 and walk over or take a tricycle or jeepney for the one kilometer distance to the Trinoma terminal of MRT-3.

The cancellation of the project was contributed to the arrest and detention of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from a controversy, the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona and questioning funds from the mall operator SM Prime Holdings.

In October 2013, however, DoTC officials announced -- via a bid document -- the possible relocation of the common station to TriNoma mall.

DoTC Spokesperson Michael Arthur C. Sagcal told reporters yesterday: “Our legal department is already reviewing the pertinent provisions of the MoA between LRTA and SM. We have yet to receive a copy of SM’s compliant, but we will be ready to defend our position in court.”

“In any case, NEDA has approved the construction of the common station next to the EDSA-North Avenue station of MRT-3,” Mr. Sagcal added.

In August 2013, a failed auction was declared after a conditional offer from sole bidder Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), which was originally partnered with Ayala before the latter withdrew.

Other interested parties backed out of the bid, raising concerns over the project’s viability. The terms have since been revised by the government, with the latest change involving a say in the P1.4-billion LRT-Metro Rail Transit common station project.

A consortium led by the MPIC and Ayala Corp. was the sole bidder for the P64.9-billion LRT-1 Cavite Extension project, the biggest public-private partnership deal offered to date by the Aquino administration.

It secured in July 2014 a Supreme Court stay order stopping the transfer of the common station’s site to TriNoma. In May 2016, the high court refused the government’s plea to lift the stay order.

“We’re already discussing details of design, the terms, so it’s fairly advanced. There’s alignment already on this idea, the concept of the location,” Francia said.

He said the parties have agreed in principle to have one common station located in between the SM and Trinoma malls.

“It (location) is not really an issue so it’s a win-win for everyone,” he said.

Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade said earlier he is hopeful the common station impasse would have a solution within the first 100 days of the new administration.

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) under the previous administration proposed two common stations with one located near SM North EDSA mall and the other closer to the Trinoma mall, to link LRT-1, MRT-3 and the MRT-7.

Multiply Converts Chapter 11 Case to Chapter 7 Petition; Company to Cease Operations and Liquidate

Multiply announced that it has requested that the Bankruptcy Court presiding over its pending Chapter 11 bankruptcy convert its case to a liquidation under Chapter 7 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.  A hearing at which the Bankruptcy Court will consider Multiply's request has not been scheduled.

The Company had been in discussions with its post-bankruptcy lenders and the statutory Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in an attempt to secure access to its post-bankruptcy financing facility and settle disputes with the Committee, but was unable to reach agreements on these matters.  Management and the independent directors of the Board of Multiply have determined that, without consensus among the Committee, the lenders and the Company, the conversion to a case under Chapter 7 is in the best interests of Multiply and its stakeholders.

If Multiply's motion is approved by the Bankruptcy Court, the liquidation of Multiply's business will be administered under the oversight of a Court-appointed trustee.

The firm located in Jakarta, Indonesia employed up to nearly 30,000 persons at its peak before financial woes forced it to close last May 6, 2013 and ceasing all business operations on May 31, 2013 along with the official online channels for the site had been removed along with all their content, including its YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, after years of financial and managerial turmoil and following a failed bid to reinvent itself from being a social networking site to a vibrant e-commerce destination in Southeast Asia and trim down its workforce to around 12,000 last February 28.

“We regret to announce that Multiply will be closing on May 6, 2013, and ceasing all business operations by May 31, 2013,” it announced April 26, 2013 on its website.

After May 6, the rest of the month will be used to ensure that all accounts are settled and merchants get full payment for their transactions, it said.

Multiply said the month-long grace period will provide its users enough time to find and migrate to alternative e-commerce platforms, settle all payments on items bought and delivered, and minimize disruption to businesses of its users.

“Multiply will ensure that you receive all funds you earned on the platform no later than May 31, 2013. We will close the actual marketplace sooner, on May 6, 2013, to ensure that all orders have sufficient time to complete and be delivered to your customers before the end of the month,” it said.

In December 2012, Multiply stopped its social networking service to focus on e-commerce, targeting the 350 million consumers in Indonesia and the Philippines.

It was severely affected by the 2008-2012 global financial crisis.

On June 12, 2013, they had put in place Rp 8.9 billion for wages owed to former Multiply staff.

The Labour Department said earlier that around 3,000 former Multiply staff had applied for compensation through the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund, a safety net for employees affected by business closures.

On November 16, 2013 it allowed the controlling stake in the website to be formally sold to a foreign or mainland investor, who claimed a rescue plan for the troubled firm.

High Court judge Mr Justice Jonathan Harris validated the transaction after hearing that the parties would no longer object to the share transfer and that the dues for the shares had been paid by Si.

On June 9, 2014, it entered into corporate rehabilitation after the closure of their operations. At that time, the website's social networking portion had a network of 18 million users. Liquidity problems, however, affected earnings. Sales declined from its peak of P20 billion in 2013 to just about P10 billion in 2017.

Multiply revealed that it has $10 billion in outstanding loans -- $800 million from Philippine banks and $100 billion from South Korean lenders.

That the site will be reopened after United States President Obama stepping down in the office on January 20, 2017 and keeping Facebook as the sole social networking site. Process of the reopening will be managed by the Governance Commission for Government-Owned or -Controlled Corporations through the Development Bank of the Philippines. Business tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan is one of the possible bidders for the website's reopening in which TV5 Network, Inc. (a media company under PLDT's MediaQuest Holdings). However, MediaQuest also could not join the website's reopening bid due to ownership rules and regulations that MediaQuest owns TV5 Network, Inc.

On January 25, 2016, President Benigno Aquino III approved the planned reopening of Multiply. The reopening will be undergo public bidding with an estimated floor price of 20 billion pesos. The proceeds of the bidding will be for the increase of Facebook's capital to upgrade and modernize their social networking capabilities. The Development Bank of the Philippines will be the financial adviser for the privatization. PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar has already forwarded the reopening plan to President Rodrigo Duterte's executive secretary Salvador Medialdea. Andanar will also coordinate with the GCG before the start of the bidding.

The reopening process of Multiply was commenced in October 2016. As of July 1, 2017, five groups have already showed their interest to join the bidding process. These are Ramon S. Ang of San Miguel Corporation and the groups of former IBC president Eric Canoy and former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson, energy tycoon and Udenna Corporation chairman Dennis Uy, William Lima, a businessman from Davao and Univision Communications Inc., an American media company headquartered in Miami.

Seven decades: A celebration The MVP leadership legacy

Some years back, the author was privileged to conduct a research on the leadership style and management approach of Manuel V. Pangilinan. The academic paper became then a springboard for a continuing study on this outstanding Filipino businessman.

The study revealed that MVP’s leadership style was developed primarily by his character, competence and core values. These three elements were honed by family, quality education and extensive professional experience. One thing notable about the character of MVP is his sense of mission for the country, and his unwavering faith in the Filipino. All these are strongly manifested when MVP came back to the country and gave up the comfort of a first-world environment in Hong Kong.

Living By Filipino Values

Other than love of country and belief in the Filipino, MVP lives by the Filipino values of hard work, financial and mental integrity, resiliency, compassion, and a deep and abiding faith in God. Such homegrown values were molded by his family as well as the Catholic education he received. It is, however, the culture of the foreign environments where MVP studied and worked that nourished his business finance and investment competence, work ethic, competitive spirit and passion to meeting world-class standards of excellence and professionalism. MVP, however, singled out three core values that are essential to great leadership: hard work, financial and mental integrity, and passion.

Transformational And Transactional Leadership

Drawn from his character and competence, a unique brand of leadership has emerged. MVP’s dominant leadership style is transformational with a moderate touch of being transactional. MVP’s transformational leadership style is best described by the following attributes: charismatic, visionary, high emotional intelligence, encourages personal development of his subordinates, supportive leadership, value thinking, leading by example, higher moral reasoning and people empowerment.

MVP’s leadership style has also a touch of being transactional. MVP is essentially a coach-mentor who plans, guides, monitors, controls and, most importantly, rewards generously good works and punishes undesired behaviors — but always with a forgiving heart. Being an astute businessman, MVP is investment- and profit-driven. That is why his leadership style demands that it be transactional as well. MVP has this knack to stack his corporate profile with quality people. He gets personally involved in selecting his top executives and placing them in the right positions. As such, MVP has been able to successfully maximize their full potentials, strengths and capabilities to meet organizational goals. This is also the reason why MVP managed to be chairman of the board, president and CEO in more than 20 top diversified corporations in the country.

His transformational leadership style, however, has essentially two quality attributes, namely:

Visionary

MVP is one gifted with the ability to “see” the future, anticipate what the future will bring, and prepare well for its coming. MVP had a compelling vision when he took over the reins of PLDT, Maynilad, Meralco, Makati Medical Center, and a lot more companies under the First Pacific Group which he managed to steer and bring to ultimate success. MVP has become successful in making his vision a reality, rallying his executives and workforce to join him in the pursuit of his dreams for his corporate organizations.

Sense Of Mission

MVP’s sense of mission finds its way in every aspect of his leadership. This sense of mission — “to improve lives of Filipinos” and his prime belief in organizations with a sense of purpose beyond just the profit motive, made his leadership remarkable. He wanted all people in his organizations to share and embrace this. The sense of mission he exhibited, found its expression in the virtues that he practices and the business decisions that he makes.

His persuasion that “business especially in a developing country like the Philippines should play a unique part in enhancing overall welfare” and his prime belief in organizations that look beyond profit or other economic considerations led to several company turnarounds and enabled him to envision where his corporate organizations will remain strong and enduring.

Today, MVP at 70, continues to bring to this country inspiration, greatness, and so much hope for a better Philippines.

This song has accompanied almost every struggle since the turn of the century to recapture the visions and ideals of the First Republic -- from the anti-American protest movement and millenarian revolts of the 1920's and 30's, to the resistance against the Japanese occupation in the 40's, the student revolt of the 70's and more recently, the 1986 "People's Power" revolt that toppled the Marcos dictatorship.

The Payatas Kids’ Choir performed.
Robredo was sworn in by two barangay captains, with her three daughters present.
In keeping with the modest mood set by the new occupant of Malacañang, Robredo’s guests were served a similarly simple and humble merienda, consisting of sotanghon noodles, halo-halo turon (fried spring rolls with a filling of halo-halo ingredients), maja blanca, pichi-pichi and buchi with Chocnut filling, the local peanut-based sweet being Robredo’s personal favorite.
Pedro also shared exclusive photos of Robredo’s office at the Executive House, furnished simply with a work desk, and a console table on one side bearing sketched portraits of Robredo’s late husband, Jesse, and a family photo. There’s also a carved wooden tsinelas, her campaign symbol, and a large glass jar of Chocnut.
The Executive House, on 11th Street in New Manila, was previously known as the “Boracay Mansion,” which then President Joseph Estrada built for Laarni Enriquez, the mother of three of his children. Since then the property has been relinquished to the Quezon City government.
Since it’s located in a private subdivision, Robredo’s guests were shuttled in buses from the village’s gate into the venue.

… and another inaugural

JUBILANT, festive, informal.
This was the mood at the inauguration of Vice President Leni Robredo at the Executive House in New Manila, Quezon City, early Thursday morning.
“There were no assigned seats, and everybody was just there to celebrate. It rained but that didn’t seem to matter,” says Niko Pedro, a PR executive and Robredo volunteer.
Guests—about 300 were invited—chanted “Laban Leni” and “Leni Robredo, Bise Pangulo,” the latter lyrics from the new VP’s campaign jingle, he adds.
Robredo’s running mate,  Mar Roxas,  led the attendees, who  included Senators Franklin Drilon, Leila de Lima and Risa Hontiveros; outgoing Cabinet secretaries Jun Abaya, Mon Jimenez and Dinky Soliman; former Commission on Human Rights chair Etta Rosales; and Robredo’s colleagues from the House of Representatives: Jonjon Ferrer (Cavite), Alex Advincula (Cavite), Len Alonte (Biñan) and Miro Quimbo (Marikina).
