Another ground-breaking concept

Jennylyn Mercado
GMA Network offers something new and ambitious in “The Cure” starting April 30.

Starring Jennylyn Mercado and Tom Rodriguez, the premise is about an experimental drug that kills cancer cells. However, its side effect causes a deeper problem – the mutation of a dangerous and highly contagious virus called the Monkey Virus Disease or MVD wherein anyone infected begins to have seizures and becomes rabid and violent.

Director Mark A. Reyes said: “It’s very exciting, a story of survival – survival of humans, survival of family, survival of two people in love, it’s a bigger picture. It’s fresh, it’s new, and the whole essence of a suspense-drama is here. I knew from the start it’s going to be big. I’m approaching this cinematically; I’m using film cameras for our taping.”

To make the series more interesting, Direk Mark said they incorporated a gorilla to the storyline and used animatronics.

Playing equally vital roles are Jaclyn Jose as Dr. Evangeline Lazaro, Mark Herras, LJ Reyes and with the special participation of Ken Chan. Also in the cast are Jay Manalo, Irma Adlawan, Ronnie Henares, Glenda Garcia, Diva Montelaba, Arra San Agustin and Leanne Bautista.

SM Prime poised to take over Harrison Plaza

Property giant SM Prime Holdings is finalizing a deal to buy out the Martel family from its contract with the City of Manila to develop and manage the seven-hectare Harrison Plaza complex.

In an interview, SM Prime chair Henry Sy Jr. said the group was finalizing the deal with the Martels after which SM Prime would be free to enter into a long-term joint development agreement with the Manila government.

“It’s a very good area. This can be a massive project,” Sy said. “We could build a new shopping center with condominium above it.”

Sy said the Martels were willing to be bought out of their contract since this group had only a few years left to hold on to the Harrison Plaza complex.

Depending on the interpretation of technicalities, the Martels’ contract will expire by December 31, 2020 or 2022, Sy said.

“Once we finish (discussions) with the Martels, we will start with it right away. Right now, demand for (residential condominium) units is so much so I have to keep on replenishing land because we’re running out of land,” Sy said.

Harrison Plaza— located near the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on Pablo Ocampo Street in Malate, Manila—is among the country’s first modern shopping centers but it had lagged its peers in terms of redevelopment.

As big and modern shopping malls raise the bar for shopping mall development in the country, the city government wants the largest shopping mall developer to take over the project.

SM Prime, for its part, had been a long-time tenant at Harrison Plaza since the complex was inaugurated in 1976.

Discussions with the City of Manila to take over Harrison Plaza started a few years ago. For its part, SM Prime has committed to invest at least P40 billion to redevelop this complex.

Sy said demand from the domestic market, coupled with demand from Chinese bulk buyers, was strong.

In the first quarter, buyers from mainland China accounted for 30 percent of SM Development Corp.’s residential reservation sales.

Philippines down 6 notches on World Press Freedom Index

Despite being touted as the country with the freest and liveliest press in Asia, the Philippines sank lower in the 2018 World Press Freedom Index of media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontières, RSF).

The country slipped to 133rd from 127th out of the 180 countries on the list. The Philippines has a score of 42.53.

The dynamism of the Philippine press has been challenged by President Rodrigo Duterte, who repeatedly hurled threats against journalists, RSF noted.

"There have been countless examples of Philippine government harassment of media that voice any kind of criticism of Duterte’s 'war on drugs.' Here, again, verbal violence and physical violence are closely linked,” it said.

RSF also noted that the Philippines is the deadliest country for journalists in Asia after four of five media workers targeted by gunmen were killed in 2017.

President Duterte created the Presidential Task Force on Media Security in 2016 to address media killings but has also gone on tirades against journalists and media outlets that have been criticial of his policies.

Last January, the Securities and Exchange Commission revoked the license of news outlet Rappler after it ruled that the news website had violated constitutional prohibition on foreign ownership of media. The SEC probe was prompted by a letter from Solicitor General Jose Calida, who was appointed by Duterte.

Duterte himself took shots at Rappler during his 2017 State of the Nation Address, accusing the news website of being owned by Americans.

Malacañang has also barred one of its reporters from covering the president’s events.

Rights and media groups slammed the attacks against Rappler, one of the most critical media outfits under Duterte, calling these politically motivated and an attempt to silence criticisms of the government.

Duterte has also called out ABS-CBN and Philippine Daily Inquirer for their supposedly “slanted” reporting. He also threatened that he would block the franchise renewal of the Lopez-owned media company.

Malacañang has repeatedly maintained that the government’s moves are “not an attack on press freedom.”

Norway is still the top country in world for press freedom. North Korea also continues to be ranked last on the index.

ABS-CBN calls deal with Globe not sustainable

ABS-CBN Corp. is studying whether it will renew the mobile network sharing agreement with Globe Telecom Inc. set to expire on June 30 this year.

“We recognized the business model is not sustainable financially, so we continue to discuss with Globe. It’s an ongoing discussion with Globe,” ABS-CBN chief financial officer Rolando Valdueza said.

Under the agreement signed in May 2013, Globe will provide the capacity and coverage on existing cellular mobile telephony network to ABS-CBN Convergence Inc. on a nationwide basis.

The parties may also share assets such as servers, towers and switches.

ABS-CBN Corp. earlier reported a net income of P3.16 billion in 2017, down 10.3 percent from P3.53 billion in 2016 in the absence of election-related advertisements.

The company  generated consolidated revenues of P40.7 billion from advertising and consumer sales last year, representing a 2.3 percent year-on-year decline from 2016.

Advertising revenues decreased 10.8 percent year-on-year because of high election-related advertising placements in the first half of 2016.

Excluding election related placements, advertising revenues in 2017 went down by only 0.3 percent  year-on-year, it said.

Consumer sales increased P1.62 billion mainly resulting from the sale of ABS-CBN TVPlus and higher revenues from SkyCable’s broadband and direct-to-home business.

Buhay Carinderia redefined

Buhay Carinderia Redefined kicked off recently at the Rizal Park Hotel (formerly the Army & Navy Club) in Manila. In his speech, Cesar Montano, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Tourism Promotions Board, noted with gratitude the efforts of Marylindbert International (led by Linda Legaspi) in launching the advocacy in 2011, where carinderia owners were given a venue that provided them identity, pride and a sense of belonging.

Buhay Carinderia, then known as Carinderia Fiesta, offers a glimpse into Filipino’s culture and customs. It is scheduled to scour the whole country in search for the best of the best in our culinary scene.

Said Montano: “Filipino cuisine reflects Philippine history. Centuries of trading with the Chinese and the colonisation of Spain yielded the introduction of unique ingredients as well as cooking styles that have created rich diversity in food preparation throughout the country.”

The local culinary experts will gather at the Vigan Convention Center from June 28-29 where they will share their talents to everyone and interact with chosen students of the area so they could also pass on their skills and experiences.

“During this two-day exposition to showcase all the surrounding provinces’ culinary gems, we will also be searching for young individuals who will become our Philippine Tourism Millennial ambassadors. They should be able to enlighten everyone with their town’s (or city’s) deep and multi-cultural food history,” Legaspi said.

PH tumbles to 133rd in 2018 World Press Freedom Index

The Philippines dropped six points in the 2018 World Press Freedom Index of the Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontieres or RSF), as it noted that the country remains one of the deadliest for journalists in Asia Pacific.

The RSF index released on Wednesday showed the Philippines’ rank falling from 127th in 2017 to 133rd this year, citing President Rodrigo Duterte’s constant tirades and harassment against members of the media, who were voicing criticisms against his adminitration’s so-called war on drugs.

It also cited the murder of four journalists in the country last year.

“In the Philippines, down six places at 133rd, the dynamism of the media has also been checked by the emergence of a leader who wants to show he is all powerful. President Rodrigo Duterte lost no time in warning the ‘sons of whore journalists’ that they would not be spared,” RSF said in a statement.

The group also said there were “countless examples” of the Philippine government’s harassment of journalists that voice any kind of criticism against Duterte’s bloody crackdown against illegal drugs.

“Here again, verbal violence and physical violence are closely linked. With four journalists murdered in connection with their work in 2017, the Philippines is one of the continent’s deadliest countries,” the watchdog said.

It said that violence against journalists is “increasingly worrying” in the country, as well as in other countries like Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan.

The RSF has previously criticized the Philippine government for its order to shut down news website Rappler, and ban its reporters from covering the presidential beat.

It has also called on lawmakers to renew the legislative franchise of Catholic Church-run radio stations across the country as well the largest commercial private TV station that has been pending at Congress for more than a year now.

Since last year, Mr. Duterte has been threatening some media organizations by accusing them of back taxes and also declaring to block the renewal of their franchise.

The Philippines’ rank in the 2018 World Press Freedom Index comes after the Arab state of Jordan, and was a notch higher than Palestine, which has been marred by violent conflict with its neighbor Israel.

Nordic countries – Norway and Sweden – were still regarded as the most respectful of press freedom, at ranked 1st and 2nd, respectively,

Ranked last at 180th was North Korea. RSF cited its government’s “draconian control of communications and the national intranet” in the reclusive country.

The RSF also noted that countries in Asia remained the “worst violator” of press freedom in the world.

It said that Vietnam (175th) and Cambodia (142nd) copy the “Chinese model of state-controlled news and information” as government in the two countries attempt to shut down online media outlets and blogs critical of their leaders.

The watchdog likewise said that the Chinese model’s influence is also being felt by the media in Thailand (140th), Malaysia (145th), and Singapore (151st). /kga

PNB seeks approvals to build new 60-story HQ in Buendia

Billionaire Lucio Tan is seeking regulatory approvals for a planned state-of-the-art and world-class 60-story building that would serve as the headquarters of banking unit Philippine National Bank (PNB).

PNB first senior vice president Alice Cordero said in a press conference the bank has applied for proper approvals with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for the proposed ‘legacy’ building that would rise in the foreclosed 8,000 square-meter property from presidential advisor on economic affairs and information technology communications Ramon Jacinto.

“We are on the last segment and we are very optimistic. It is a legacy that we are going to put up in Makati, the design is world-class,” she said.

Cordero said the bank has tapped a world-renowned architectural firm based in New York for the development of the property situated at the corner of Gil Puyat Avenue and Paseo de Roxas in Makati City.

Absence of ‘white knight’ may derail Multiply rehab plan

At the rate things are going, it seems the Multiply may be headed towards liquidation.

After it was abruptly abandoned by its supposed strategic investor, the French retail giant Casino Guichard-Perrachon early this year, Multiply now finds its rehabilitation plan in jeopardy since no other "white knight" has come forward to rescue the debt-saddled flagship chain Multiply LLC and its sister companies.

Although there were earlier reports that several interested parties led by the US Wal-Mart chain and two investor groups from Hong Kong and Taiwan have sent feelers for exploratory buy-in negotiations with Multiply, there has been no indications of any breakthrough agreements yet, which has apparently made the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) "impatient."

SEC sources said the corporate watchdog is now bent on imposing a strict deadline for Uniwide as well as its SEC-appointed interim receiver to at least gain inroads in talks with potential investors to avoid the possibility of declaring a "failure of corporate rehabilitation" which could eventually lead to liquidation.

The SEC approved Multiply’s rehabilitation plan in February last year after the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Casino for the latter to gain control of the local chain upon infusing P4 billion in additional liquidity.

But Casino backed out of the deal and opted not to extend the MOU which expired on Dec. 31, 2016 even as the Multiply receiver had clinched the much-delayed approval of the creditor banks on the rehabilitation plan. Casino and Multiply said they could not execute the fund infusion and corporate rehabilitation pending the consent of all of Multiply’s creditor banks. Multiply has a debt load of about P16 billion, over half of which are owed to the banks.

The French retailer reportedly said it was abandoning its plan to acquire Multiply, not because of the country’s political uncertainties, but because creditors failed to agree on how to rehabilitate the discount retailer.

With the absence of a white knight, the creditor banks of Multiply – led by UCPB, International Exchange Bank and Metrobank – have sought a dacion en pago or payment in kind arrangement with the SEC. – Conrado Diaz Jr.

Hitmaker takes talent management seriously

Vehnee Saturno has built a solid reputation as top songwriter 38 years into the ’biz. ABS-CBN’s “ASAP” even gave a tribute to his hit compositions with Martin Nievera as main performer two years ago.

Vehnee’s first hit in 1983 was the song “Be My Lady” which launched both his and Martin’s careers as songwriter and recording artist, respectively. That big break led to a string of gold, platinum, and multi-platinum record awards. Hit after hit, his songs did wonders to the rising careers of Donna Cruz, Jessa Zaragoza and Jaya. Even Jay R and Sarah Geronimo acknowledge the fact that Vehnee’s songs greatly contributed to their respective careers.

Lately, Vehnee has been exploring the artist management field more seriously. Some of those he has helped are James Wright for whom he produced an eponymous album which won Gold Record; Beverly Caimen who won Best Vocalist at WCOPA and currently making waves in Japan’s music scene; Esang de Torres who trained at Vehnee Saturno Music Training Center (VSMTC); and R&B singer Daryl Ong whose rise to stardom began when he made his own version of Vehnee’s “Ikaw Na Nga” first sung by Willie Revillame.

Gabby Lopez steps down; cousin Mark taking over

Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III yesterday announced his retirement as ABS-CBN Corp. chair, an influential role that allowed him to define the entertainment and news experiences of millions of Filipinos over the last two decades.

During the media giant’s annual stockholders’ meeting, Lopez nominated his younger cousin Mark Lopez to take his place as ABS-CBN chair.

He will assume the title of chair emeritus and will stay on as a director of ABS-CBN. He told shareholders he would continue to provide “consultative” guidance to the board.

The elder Lopez, who served as ABS-CBN chair since 1997, is credited with growing the company into the media conglomerate that it is today.

It was also during his tenure when ABS-CBN embarked on an ambitious diversification program that included its entry into broadband internet via SkyCable and the launch of digital television.

His cousin, ABS-CBN CEO Carlo Katigbak, described him on Thursday as the “one constant” over the last 21 years, helping transform the company from a radio and TV network “into a truly diversified multimedia and content company.”

During his speech, the elder Lopez emphasized the need for younger figures in top management to lead ABS-CBN.

“The demographic profile of the Philippines has always been biased toward the youth. Who can asses better the needs of our audience than like-minded young managers,” Lopez, who turned 65 last August, said.

“Today’s digital world is vastly different from the world I managed,” he added.

Mark Lopez is 45 years old while Katigbak is turning 48 this month.

The elder Lopez noted that Mark Lopez’s role was envisioned to be mainly “a fiduciary responsibility.”

Mark Lopez has been with ABS-CBN for seven years. His role in the media giant was that of chief technology officer. A key initiative of his was the company’s system modernization, which included moving key functions to the cloud and automating content creation and delivery. He also had a direct hand in ABS-CBN’s shift to digital television.

Before joining ABS-CBN, he worked for 13 years in Manila Electric Co., where he rose to the rank of vice president and chief information officer.

In a statement, ABS-CBN said Gabby Lopez’s decision to step down was not related to the current political environment and was on account of previously set succession planning terms.

It said Mark Lopez was “identified as a successor as early as five years ago.”

ABS-CBN is one of the media groups that earned the ire of President Duterte for critical new reporting.

A separate issue dating back to the presidential campaign over ABS-CBN’s failure to air Mr. Duterte’s political ads further strained relations.

Last year, Mr. Duterte threatened to block the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise, which expires in 2020. During ABS-CBN’s previous annual stockholders’ meeting, Lopez, whose father was jailed during the martial law, downplayed those concerns, saying the threats were “part and parcel of our work being a media institution.”

“We will comply with all the requirements associated with the renewal of our franchise and we hope to participate in the renewal process,” Kane Choa, ABS-CBN head of communications, said yesterday.

Toward the end of his retirement speech, Lopez said he would continue to work and “not disappear into the woodwork.”

“I may be retired but I am not dead,” he quipped. “At the end of the day, I can also take time out to just relax and watch the grass grow. Nobody who knows me will ever believe that is what I will do.”

Gabby Lopez retires as ABS-CBN chairman

Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez 3rd has stepped down as chairman of media giant ABS-CBN Corp, turning over the position to cousin Martin “Mark” Lopez.

Gabby Lopez’s retirement after over two decades at the helm was announced during ABS-CBN’s annual stockholders’ meeting on Thursday.

“As every athlete knows, there comes a time when inevitably it’s time to let go of the reins and allow others to take over,” he said in a speech.

“My father has always said ‘broadcasting’ is for the young. After all, today’s digital world is vastly different from the world I managed,” he added.

The 65-year-old Gabby, who also served as a chief executive officer from 1997 to 2012, stressed: “[I] will not disappear into the woodwork.”

He was then elected chairman emeritus, following his father Eugenio “Geny” Lopez Jr. who was given the post in 1997.

ABS-CBN said Gabby Lopez was responsible for transforming the company “from being the country’s biggest broadcasting network into being the country’s leading media and entertainment company.”

He paved the way for the introduction of the company’s cable TV service SkyCable, global subscription channel The Filipino Channel, and streaming sites TFC.tv and iWant TV, and ABS-CBN TVplus, a digital terrestrial television product.

The media firm’s new chairman, Mark Lopez, said he accepted “this huge responsibility of carrying on the company’s vision of being in the service of the Filipino—using the blueprint of excellence and innovation set by Gabby”.

“ABS-CBN has played an instrumental role in nation-building in the past 65 years. We understand what the company means to the Filipino and this country, and we will take this to heart as we guide the company through its digital transformation,” he added.

Mark was previously ABS-CBN’s chief technology officer, focusing on the company’s strategic directions and technology operations as well as its modernization program.

He also spent 13 years at power distribution utility Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) where he was vice-president and chief information officer, and president of subsidiary e-Meralco Ventures, Inc.

Also yesterday, ABS-CBN disclosed that its board had given the go-signal for an additional investment of P592 million to fund Sky Cable’e expansion.

Gabby Lopez turns over leadership to cousin

Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III has been elected Chairman Emeritus of ABS-CBN Corporation after stepping down as Chairman of in favor of cousin Martin “Mark” Lopez, the son of Ambassador Manuel Lopez.

In a statement, ABS-CBN said its Board of Directors elected the new Chair and Chairman Emeritus during its organizational meeting as part of the company’s succession planning process.

Gabby, who turned 65 last August and is the second chairman emeritus in the company’s history, will remain as a director of the Board. His father Eugenio Lopez Jr. was given the same title after Gabby was elected chairman in 1997.

“As every athlete knows, there comes a time when inevitably it’s time to let go of the reins and allow others to take over,” he said.

He added that, “my father has always said ‘broadcasting’ is for the young. After all, today’s digital world is vastly different from the world I managed.”

In his speech after the ABS-CBN annual stockholders’ meeting, Lopez stressed that he “will not disappear into the woodwork.”

Gabby, who also served as CEO of ABS-CBN from 1997 to 2012, is credited with steadily transforming ABS-CBN from being the country’s biggest broadcasting network into being the country’s leading media and entertainment company.

Under his helm, ABS-CBN diversified into various successful ventures that include interactive and online media, international and domestic cable and satellite channels, broadband services, sports programming, consumer products and licensing, digital TV, and immersive experiences.

Meanwhile, Mark said “I accept this huge responsibility of carrying on the company’s vision of being in the service of the Filipino – using the blueprint of excellence and innovation set by Gabby.”

Already identified as a successor as early as five years ago, Mark said “We understand what the company means to the Filipino and this country, and we will take this to heart as we guide the company through its digital transformation.”

In his previous role as chief technology officer, Mark was responsible for setting the company’s strategic directions and ensuring operational excellence in information and communications, as well as technology broadcast engineering.

He spearheaded ABS-CBN’s system modernization, highlighted by the migration to the cloud and the automation of content creation and delivery to various media platforms.

He was also responsible for ABS-CBN’s migration to HD and the completion of the digital terrestrial television (DTT) infrastructure.

Prior to joining ABS-CBN, Mark spent 13 years at MERALCO, the largest power distribution company in the country, where he eventually assumed the role of vice president and chief information officer and concurrent to his role as CIO, he also served as the president of e-Meralco Ventures, Inc. until 2010.
